Jimmy Carter on Globalisation of "Tech"

Globalization, as defined by rich people like us, is a very nice thing... you are talking about the Internet, you are talking about cell phones, you are talking about computers. This doesn't affect two-thirds of the people of the world. -Jimmy Carter

Carter died after he had turned 100 and proudly voted for Harris. He won't see another inauguration of the insurrectionist. He won't see a project or plan for 2025. He'll probably skip the handover of Ukraine (partially or wholly) back to Greater Russia or USSR 2.0. He probably lived just about long enough to see the latest round of powwow from Trump and his boss (MElon) about why importing labour and offshoring jobs is a Good Thing.

The US seems to have become a complete kakistocracy and plutocracy. Carter saw that coming. Reagan brought that about.

The Carter that stays in the headlines is another man* (Shawn Corey Carter, also known as "Jay-Z" and "The Carter Administration") anonymously accused of rape of a minor. What happened to transparency in the system and why is a man accused of sexual misconduct by 27 women (not anonymously!) considered the next commander in chief?

Anyway, Carter's legacy in the area of science (and technology) can be found below.

Statement on the Future of Telecommunications

We've lost an edge that we used to have in scientific innovation applications to goods to be sold. In many ways, that is also changing in the electronic field. Almost all of the materials that we use now are of advanced technology, I have an iPad and also an iPod, both of which are made in China. Although we have designed them here with Apple, for instance, they are manufactured overseas. -Jimmy Carter

* Another man named Carter is the one who stays in the headlines (and may remain a subject of focus for months to come). He can become a problem for the former president, especially because he adopts the name/identity of the former president with titles like "Carter Administration" (recurrent in the lyrics; I've listened a lot to his music since my mid-teens). Some hostile right-wing media can exploit that to googlebomb, distort LLMs, and intentionally mislead readers with clickbait in headlines, e.g. "why are liberals defending/believing Carter [Jay-Z] but not Trump?"
