LIGHTING UP A NEW YEAR
For the end of my month mostly-not-off, I finally let myself waste New Year's Eve and Day on something completely pointless - the optical communication experiments I didn't get reading in time for ROOPHLOCH, as mentioned in 2024-10-01ROOflop.txt. As a result this post will hopefully be transmitted by light before being received and automatically uploaded to aussies.space. Actually it's being sent and received by the same computer at the moment, which is rather pointless, but it makes it easier to debug.
It's all still just a bird's nest of breadboards on my workbench. I was hoping to start on the cases for the transmitter and receiver today, but somewhat predictably got bogged down for hours trying to get the software configuration right. Most things worked quite easily, but I wasn't getting the EOF character to terminate 'cat' at the end of the file, whereafter the file gets automatically uploaded to aussies.space by the receiver computer. The description in the stty man page really doesn't suggest it, but by trial and error I eventually discovered that enabling the 'icanon' setting lets the EOF character (default Ctrl-D) through without messing other things up.

new year thoughts
main focus: making things out-of-the-ordinary. creating memories. overcoming the home-body introvert instincts (reinforced by the partner and generally being covid-conscious) to try and like... make life. seasonal stuff, special occasions, but also Going And Experiencing things, un-gluing from the computer etc. i do want to continue a kind of low-spend thing. it went relatively ok most of last year with only one impulse purchase. everything else was in the parameters of "special occasion" or building up our physical media library. of course it will be a bit different what with making adventures happen. i'm trying to strike a balance. i'm not saving because i really need to, i'm simply trying to not spend as a cure for boredom or discomfort. i don't want to go to the other extreme where all spending is Bad and i end up forgoing experiences and making life a little fun.

End of Year Sleeplessness
First up, you may notice in the head of the file that I'm back on my MacBook. That's due to a weird bug I keep running into on my Dell laptop with the LAN and WiFi drivers. Somehow, it just /stops seeing them/, and nothing in dmesg or the other logs gives me any idea what's going on. It's as if the hardware itself just stops existing, though this doesn't happen under Windows 7. And it's /always/ a sudden thing. It can happen on boot, or coming back from sleep, or even in the middle of a download.

Cold
The 10th was my birthday, and while I got nothing for it, I don't mind. After all, the only things I'm really wanting right now are items I probably wouldn't be getting anyway:
* K-TOR Power Box 50 pedal generator[0]
* Solar power setup (Panels and battery)
* Raspberry Pi 400 or 800 kit
* 1-2 low power portable 15" displays (Maybe the new Raspberry Pi display?)
* High-capacity SD and MicroSD cards for storage/archiving
* Low-energy lighting for my space

Happy New Year
My lifestyle has morphed over the past year. I have become much less interested in tech. Tech just reminds me of work. I have not been updating this phlog, because my thoughts instead get written into notebooks. If I have something to say here it will appear, but it is not the primary place for documenting thoughts of mine.
I have acquired an interest also in leatherworking. I am not good at it, but it is fun to make things. The lion's share of my time, though, has been devoted to philosophy. My spare time is mainly filled with thinking and note taking. Maybe this could end up as a part of this gopherhole. At the moment, I do not know.

The old year is finnally over
Happy New Year to all hackers, makers, tinkerers, and home lab enthusiasts! Finally, FINALLY the old year is over! We haven't got spring yet, but I feel a fresh wind in my life. The old year was a struggle for me at the end. The weather made me depressed and I was bored to death.
But the new year brings me hope. And again some fun in life. I hope I will get back to my hobbies more and come up with a few interesting projects. Anyway, the new year gives me new motivation. And that's the most important!
