Thank You, London! There Was No Way to Still Reliably Host Gemini From Home (on a Raspberry Pi 4) Due to Scale
2 years ago we moved everything to a beefy Debian server and consolidated almost everything (in London). The Gemini capsule wasn't coping with the network load (at home) and today, seeing we served over 125,000 pages in Gemini since midnight (that's 20 hours), we're relieved about the expansion. Our capsule continues to grow and to improve. More people check it out regularly. It increases the incentive to publish.
Since moving everything to London we've had far fewer issues. Maybe we're biased because we're not far away (~100 minutes on a fast train), so latency is low and bandwidth seems great. Backups don't take long.
The only regret we've long had is that we hadn't made the move earlier.
As noted in passing yesterday, earlier that day (hours earlier) we received great news from the High Court of Justice in London. We would be wiser not to share any details at this point, but it was a resounding victory for us. The Master (judge) sided with us. It was a Court hearing that we had prepared for (for about two weeks) dealing with the abhorrent wannabe 'hacker' (if not cracker) who, as noted in the Particulars of Claim (POC) and CC, impersonated people in Techrights IRC and even locked them out of their own username! Then he wonders why people report him to the police and sighs/offloads with great relief when he does not get arrested at airports. In 2024 alone he publicly boasted about 20 times that he managed to go through airports without being arrested.
This week is important for us and tomorrow we go out to celebrate. Sometimes, provided patience, justice finds its way. █
