Debian Left Twitter (MElon "X"), We Think the Free Software Foundation (FSF) Should Do the Same
THE FSF no longer endorses Debian as such, due in part to Debian shipping some blobs in the default ISO (or equivalent).
For reasons that we can totally understand Debian quit "X" (but not social control media or Social Control Media as a whole). It already got slammed by Microsoft Lunduke (booster of the Cheeto Mussolini) for doing so, so it's not something one does without expectation of backlash.
"X" does not work with Free software. Twitter abandoned its old (and JavaScript-free) interface about 4 years ago, but the FSF still posts to it (by proxy), in turn rewarding people who run non-free software and continue to ramp up "engagement" in Nazi Twitter:
For how much longer can the FSF justify its "engagement" there? Its presence there helps MElon more than it helps Software Freedom. The FSF has raised 434k US dollars since its fund-raising stared. It still raises about $2k per day, this progress bar is still moving fast. How many people of much of that comes though Twitter ("X") referrals? Probably not much. See the number of "impressions" above. We added arrow to show that after half a day the "tweets" only get about 400 "impressions" (which may simply mean people scrolling past these, not even opening these). There are zero comments this past day.
What would the FSF really lose if it stopped posting there?
As a side note, we commend Debian for doing the right thing about Social Control Media but hope it'll quit all of it. It's just time wasted. Debian volunteers have better things to do. Any "engagement" in Free software repositories (e.g. someone running apt install nano
) is far more meaningful than someone scrolling past some "toot". █
