When It Comes to the Web, Google is Evil and It Destroys the Web's Integrity With LLM Slop
Even academia, which is meant to keep standards high, is being lured into LLM slop
Yesterday: Google News is Dying
IT cannot be stressed often enough. Companies like Google do not value information and they see objects like words and images as "money" or "potential ad space", nothing else. Those are mere "commodities" or a "business opportunity" (to them).
The Web is perishing due to slopfarms*, Google does not (or barely) tackle slopfarms (see the story above), and Google even helps create slopfarms. It's selling tools. It wants to profit from plagiarism via slopfarms.
This new article entitled "Google makes Gemini Advanced free for US college students" is very worrying. Google teaches young people or the "next generation" that plagiarism is OK as long as "you do it with (our) LLMs". So in addition to the obvious confidentiality and surveillance problems, as an associate put it, this move promotes LLM slop in academia. There is already too big a problem with LLM slop there and it is killing the learning environment.
We strongly urge people to (re)consider if they want to keep or cut Google out of their lives. Google is now part of the problem, maybe even the enemy of preservation and accurate information. Remember hat "Google News Promotes Slop Plagiarism, Misinformation". Google just doesn't care; it's about money. What about its reputation? █
