It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him.

not a gardening blog 6: things I need to remind myself every year
Here are some things I manage to forget are true about gardening every. single. year.
I am tempted to write them on the wall of my garage just so I don't forget. Again.
1. Yes, one seed really will turn into one plant. It's not just a packet of expensive dirt.
2. Imagine the plant the size it will be in August, not the size it is now.
3. Weeding is always easier than you think it will be.

My Git Server Has Changed
After spending the last 8 hours committing the cardinal sins of coding/debuggin live production code and pushing code on a Friday, I have finally got my Git server moved from vigrey.com/git/ to git.vigrey.com!
I suspect some things will break a little bit. I'll work on those things as I spot them. But for now, I think things are playing nicely. After testing a bit, it seems as though the Gemini capsule and Website version of my Git forge are working properly.
Well, now my business cards are incorrect. Looks like I should design new business cards. Heck, I have plenty of card stock and a straight line cutter, so maybe I'll handmake my business cards this time around instead of letting some soulless corporation handle it.

The Great LLM DDOS of 2025
Let me give you some numbers. A friend hosts some fairly small personal websites on my infrastructure, and I manage it for him. These were never high-traffic sites, but since May 4th at 00:00:00 UTC, his server has received over 2545000 web requests. It is, at this very moment, being scraped by multiple IP addresses associated with Alibaba US, specifically Alibaba Cloud LLC.

The silver lining is that it's mostly static content, so not too many resources are being wasted by these AI scrapers, in this particular case.
I could block all of the public clouds. I've talked about doing it before. The drawback is that it might block something legitimate, like Internet Archive. I could also put an AI data poisoner program in between a front-facing reverse proxy and the web server hosting sites. That's reasonable, and I've talked about doing that too. But I shouldn't have to do that. I'm just a caring and sharing kind of guy with a terminal illness, who has absolutely no fucks left to give.
