Unless a Third of All Microsoft Layoffs Worldwide Are in Redmond (Washington) Alone, Microsoft Has Just Lied to Everyone Via Jordan Novet in CNBC (i.e. the Usual Any Time There's Mass Layoffs and Novet Weighs in With False Numbers)
I kept updating this page every few minutes; only a few minutes ago it finally showed up Redmond at 1985 layoffs.
Microsoft says only about 6,000 people worldwide will lose their job and all the media that we can find then parrots whatever Microsoft claims (via Jordan Novet, who has a well-documented history of distorting mass layoff figures and their reasons).
This time is no exception, throwing lots of buzzwords around, including (as we predicted) "AI".
Is this the full number? Some sites around the world (not US) speak about many Microsoft staff that's impacted in their country. We already saw several examples of that when surveying articles.
If 2,000 of those ~6,000 are just in Redmond, how much does that leave for almost 50 other states, including California, where many Microsoft operations are based (Microsoft, LinkedIn, GitHub etc. aren't based in one city in Washington)?
Where are those ~6,000 workers? An incomplete number? Transparency needed, not just some statement from an anonymous spokesperson speaking to a media operative of Microsoft, spreading the dubious figures more widely by Microsoft sponsored sites like GeekWire [1, 2].
Maybe when Microsoft said 3% it meant ~6,000 or more in the US alone. What about over a hundred other countries? █
