This Month's Mail (MX) Server Survey Shows Microsoft at 0.20% "Market Share"
And the June 2025 Web Server Survey is about to come out; it'll show Microsoft at around 2%
Yesterday we wrote that "Windows used to dominate" in relation to one particular country. An important distinction, however, is that "Windows used to dominate the desktop," a reader responded. "It never dominated anywhere else and has been an also-ran or no-show in several areas including mobile computing and supercomputing."
"Implying that Microsoft dominated anywhere other than the desktop is not just wrong but part of their marketing strategy."
"Even areas where there are a lot of physical machines attributed to Microsoft, such as mail servers, are due to the bad many servers to one service ratio required by Microsoft. In contrast, on normal GNU/Linux one can have multiple mail, web, file, *and* print services all on one and the same piece of hardware."
That's a fair point. We need to remind people that desktops and laptops decline (in proportion to other client devices) - as we showed earlier this week, citing statCounter - and at the "back end" GNU/Linux is already dominant and has long been dominant. █
