Microsoft and IBM Don't Have Much of a Future (They Mostly Pretend at This Point)
Days ago: Layoffs and Shutdowns at IBM, Not Just Microsoft
Latest at the moment (sorted by update last made):
To quote the first comment: "So how many layoffs and forced departures are expected as a result of the Almaden closure and shift ? It certainly is not ZERO. Maybe VP of Quantum Spin And Coverup, Jay Gambetta can tell everyone instead of sugar coating the news of the closure. After all, Alvind needs to make his oversized CEO bonus for 2026 before he retires."
Many things at Microsoft are shutting down this month. As pointed out earlier, the media has barely reported on that (it helps the coverup and really matters that Microsoft did that during a national holiday!), so don't expect to find much press coverage.
IBM and Microsoft are in some ways alike but in many ways different. IBM still sells a lot of hardware. IBM is also bigger, at least in terms of "headcount". Both companies are extremely arrogant and both have a long history of monopoly abuse, promotion of software patents, and shameless patent extortion.
Last year we argued that "IBM's Bad Leadership is a Threat to GNU/Linux" and seeing what's happening with Wayland right now, the same can be said about Red Hat in isolation.
In order for GNU/Linux to survive and thrive we must look beyond and "after" Red Hat. That is to say, do not count on Red Hat always being there to maintain what it created (or started).
Companies that are desperate for money (the same is true for law firms) would do evil things in money-grabbing moves. Just like law firms and barristers would literally attack women victims (of men who pay the legal bills) the large so-called "tech" firms would attack their own users and customers in pursuit of income.
If the "market dynamics" work, then those firms will eventually run out of reputation, business, and staff (nobody will wish to work for them). █
