This morning: Two-Thirds Towards FSF Goal, Richard Stallman to Give Talks in Europe

Right now (some time earlier today they changed the cutoff date to "July 18"):

In a world where technology is becoming increasingly predatory, free software is the solution. The FSF has been defending your software freedom for forty years. Join us in our crucial work to protect user freedom from tech oligarchs and become one of 200 new associate members by July 18.

The FSF has extended until Friday its fund-raising campaign. We expected this because they almost always do this.

Unlike the FSF, our advocacy for Free software involves whistleblowers and leaks. We take another approach and we get along just fine with the FSF.

The FSF's founder has just issued this call to "US citizens", saying "phone your senators and urge each one to protect the funding for public media."

He offered this "script:

Hello! My name is [First Name]. I'm a constituent and am calling to ask Sen. [Name] to oppose any action that cuts funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Public media are among our nation’s most important media, with overwhelming support among people from all 50 states and all political leanings.

We've long been considered reliable as a media/reporting site, including inside the FSF. In today's exceedingly (and increasingly) hostile atmosphere reporting facts is not easy because of retaliation and other key factors. The threat or the risk isn't misreporting but reporting correctly on affairs that "pain" the corrupt oligarchs.

We've not done fund-raising campaigns since 2023. We had to learn from experience how to handle SLAPPs and so far we're doing OK while also reporting or sharing our findings. The upside of the SLAPPs might be, based on direct experience we can illuminate how SLAPPs work and how to respond to them effectively.

The FSF runs critical infrastructure for key projects and Free software that billions of people use. Support the FSF. If you have money to share, do not share it with the EFF. We consider it compromised.

I continue to be the Chief GNUisance of the GNU Project
