In Norway, Android/Linux Has Just Hit All-Time High (First Time Since 2020), GNU/Linux Already Very Prevalent
Unlike Sweden, Denmark, and Finland (near neighbours), Norway has long shown considerable adoption [1, 2] of "Linux" and this week in libreplanet-discuss Ole Aamot from Oslo announced some more Free software contributions of his (one of 3 messages by him). To quote his latest:
Dear Libreplanet,I would like to announce that I actively maintain and provide three Free Software applications for the GNOME desktop environment, all focused on audio streaming and recording:
GarageJam Website: https://www.garagejam.org/Description: A collaborative audio production tool for live jamming and remote recording, designed for musicians and podcasters using GNOME and JACK/PipeWire.GNOME Radio Website: https://www.gnomeradio.org/Description: A graphical FM radio tuner for GNU/Linux desktops that supports digital recording and time-shifting, compatible with RTL-SDR and other audio capture devices.GNOME Voice Website: https://www.gnomevoice.org/Description: A privacy-focused, end-to-end encrypted voice communication application that supports geolocation metadata (GEO-MLAR-2025) and decentralized message storage. All projects are released under Free Software licenses and available for community use, development, and redistribution. I welcome contributions, feedback, and collaboration from fellow free software advocates.Best regards, Ole Kristian Aamot Developer and Maintainer www.oleaamot.com
Despite its small population size, Norway gave us Qt and many other things. Sure, Qt is no longer Free software, but it makes some exceptions.
Our previous article mentioned Windows problems that Finland was having. It said: "If Russia attacks Finland..."
"It has been attacking electronically for quite some time," as someone notes, "but because of Microsoft exceptionalism, that seems to be allowed or even encouraged."
Unlike Sweden, Norway and Finland have land borders with Russia. That's a problem. Same as Ukraine's.
It's not just a problem for Scandinavia. "Same for other countries," as noted by the above person, "notably Ukraine which has lost sovereignty of its infrastructure when it was subsumed into Microsoft Azure, thus leaving it bare for attack and even monitoring from within." █
