Google "AI Overview" is Not AI and Not Overview
Neither intelligent nor overview; Google "AI Overview" is not AI Overview, it's just cleverly disguised plagiarism
This morning I took Google "AI Overview" to a test by asking it about a dozen basic questions, then checking where the answer (sans permutation or mild variation) actually came from. Google "AI Overview" is just a parrot that typically links to something but sometimes lacks a link/attribution. It rephrases a bit. It borrows a little bit from here, a little bit from there, then fuses that together. In that regard, it's "AI" like "image fusion" is "AI". It's a misleading label.
Google "AI Overview" is actually not a new thing, the term "AI Overview" is new. Google has long (for many years already) provided summaries or answers to commonly-searched or frequently-asked questions. Sometimes it extracted portions of articles, which it then linked to it. It was not known as Google "AI Overview" and Google did not attempt to call it "AI".
In short, do not be misled; what Google does isn't smart, it's just ripping off the sites it already crawled for as long as 27 years. Like AMP and Google Cache, Google seeks new ways to "rob" sites of eyeballs. Facebook does the same by discouraging posts with links that "leave" Facebook.
The "tech" companies aren't growing. They have mass layoffs. Now they're in a race to 'steal' the income of other companies, including the actual producers of information; calling this "intelligence" and pretending that they create something new is a smokescreen. It's also a "legal hack". █
