The Future of the Web is One Rendering Engine or 'Flavours' of Chrome
Alphabet/Google was the 'Sugar Daddy' of Firefox (via Mozilla) since its very early days. As soon as Firefox got some millions of users it was just some "Google referral" software with extra functionality built 'around' it.
Some time ago we shared a lengthy video where Baker recalled how that arrangement came about. At the moment, due to antitrust perils (partly caused by Microsoft lobbying), it looks likely that Mozilla will lose its biggest revenue source. When that happens, and it's very likely just a matter of time, LibreWolf and all those other Gecko "things" will rot. That includes Thunderbird, at least due to idiots who send Web pages instead of real E-mail. Forget all those Rust things and the stuff offloaded by Mozilla to the Linux Foundation. It's going nowhere. It's stale. As for Firefox, Mozilla gave it as a gift to Microsoft some months ago.
Where does that leave the Web? Well, HTTP/S is one thing, *HTML and "webapps" (JavaScript, WASM etc.) are another matter. It's not looking good and the intervention by the US government shows a tech-illiterate, misguided judge proposing utter nonsense - resolutions that can make matters even worse.
The future of the Web does not look bright at all. Mozilla might not even exist in 5 or 10 years. To most people, the Web won't mean the Web but some "app".
Many nerds don't want to play a role in this kind of future. They explore alternatives. █
