Fat ears
Toru Takemitsu, Something that Awakens Music (1985).
I wonder what Takemitsu would think about the developments in `omnipresent communications` that have taken place during the 40 years following this statement.
Sadly I feel that it is not only my ears that have become overloaded and unable to take in anything new.

Taking back control of a Residents Management Company, a case study
It's recently come to my attention that there's a housing development in North London whose Residents Management Company (RMCs) seems to have slipped out of control of the residents themselves. As nearly half of RMCs are not member-controlled at some point in their existence, this isn't earth shattering. What makes this case interesting is: [...]

The Magic That Scares Me
Super short post, which I am writing because I mentioned the quote I wrote later in this post to a coworker in the last day...
I sometimes do electronics, although very simple electronics where the worst that will happen is that one of the components blow out and release the "Magic Smoke".

Back to groff
When this phlog started in 2012, I used to write entries in groff with the mm macros (with a tiny bit of my own macros on top). Then I switched to plain Markdown in 2018.
Starting now, the phlog is back on groff. I just want to do more (g)roff stuff again and this is a good opportunity. :-) It's not really required and Markdown does the job just fine, to be honest. But it's fun!
I want to try to make my own macro set this time, not building on any- thing else. That should be more educational.

No shell history at all
I was a bit miffed when shells started saving history to disk (and even moreso when I discovered BSD process accounting). It turns out several people here on Gemini are getting into shell history techniques and sharing tips: [...]

rethinking aliases
I had an earlier note about using fzf for searching my notes. I keep forgetting the aliases, so I’m going to bundle them with a justfile and create just one alias with a bunch of arguments.

Simplicity
I can't believe I'd never heard this quote before today. And of all sources, I found it through a Youtube video[0] that really wasn't related to Davis or TempleOS.
I think it may be my new motto. For a long time, although maybe not long enough, I've truly enjoyed using the less complex methods of doing things...although "complex" may vary in connotation among different people. Indeed, to use less complex software, sometimes you need to engage in much more complex configuration (mutt with Big G email is one example).

Posting on Gopher vs. the Web
Sometimes I wonder where best to post something. If I feel something applies to both web and gopher domains, I post it on both, otherwise just to one.
I don't generally like linking to web resources from gopher - but that is limiting. Sometimes I'll read something on a (web) blog and think I have something to say on it, and think that it would be best posted on the web, rather than gopher. But then I feel that gopher lacks content, and could use more of it - so do I link to the web content [0], archive it on gopher [1], selectively quote it [2], or just don't post it on gopher at all?
Some sites have a web-to-gopher proxy and just post to gopher, mirroring all their gopher posts to the web automatically. If the proxy recognizes links in text files, this can make it easy to link to websites and forget about it. I don't like this as it assumes content is suitable for both domains. Another issue is that the automatic proxies give free rein to the AI bots to hammer one's gopher server. I don't think gopher itself is on the radar of the web bots [3], and I'd like to keep it that way.
