Despite Losing Over a Quarter Million Dollars a Year Software in the Public Interest (SPI) Gives Helping Hand to Libreboot
The latest status - as per IRS filings anybody can access - shows unprecedented losses (in 2018 they earned over a million dollars):
Just over a week ago Libreboot announced that it had "join[ed] Software in the Public Interest (SPI) as Associated Project". We mentioned this in passing at the time. Historically, Techrights and its associates have had good relations with Libreboot, whose founder wrote to libreplanet-discuss two days ago. "I happened to notice this just now," she noted, "and I have to say, I really like what you're doing."
That was said to Carmen Maris in relation to Mission:Libre. "If there's anything I can do, please feel free to reach out," she said. "Educating the young about free software is an important and noble goal, and something currently lacking."
She lives on shoestring budget. She could instead work in some large "tech company". She could probably become rich by now, but instead chose community projects.
We've had our share of criticism of Software in the Public Interest (SPI), but that was mostly in relation to Debian and Microsoft. Daniel Pocock wrote many of the articles [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. SPI supports all sorts of other projects and distros.
Hopefully SPI will read the criticism and consider it worthy input; not every critic is an "enemy".
SPI's financial state depends a lot on its public image or its reputation. Donations are "competitive". Recall what happened to Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) Inc. █
