Engadget ☛ Sackbird Studios emerges from the Xbox layoffs
When Microsoft and Xbox announced layoffs numbering in the thousands earlier this year, it meant the end for a whole bunch of upcoming game projects. Many studios were forced to downsize, and some shuttered entirely, as a result. Luckily, some enterprising developers are turning the bad news into something positive.
A group of former devs from ZeniMax Online Studios, which made The Elder Scrolls Online and scrapped looter shooter Blackbird, have banded together to form a new company called Sackbird Studios. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the team is going for the employee-owned, self-funded route. "With no outside investors and full creative control, the team is focused on building great games—on their own terms," the announcement states.

Fandom Inc ☛ Devs Behind Canceled Xbox MMO Blackbird Game Launch A New Studio With A Great Name
Earlier this year, Microsoft unleashed a massive wave of layoffs and game cancellations, including Project Blackbird, an MMO that was described as a cross between Cyberpunk 2077 and Destiny from the team behind The Elder Scrolls Online. Now, that team has reunited to form an employee-owned studio, Sackbird Studios.
The studio shared the announcement on its official site, and noted that Sackbird is self-funded "for multiple years" without the aid of outside investors. That will allow the team to retain full creative control of their own games.
"After years in AAA, we wanted the freedom to take smart risks without waiting for a greenlight or chasing quarterly targets, said Sackbird Studios chief creative officer David Worley in a statement. "We're fully employee-owned and funded, which means we only answer to people who are passionate about games."

The Register UK ☛ IBM invites CockroachDB to infest its mainframes with PostgreSQL
IBM has signed an OEM agreement with Cockroach Labs – maker of the distributed PostgreSQL-like cloud RDBMS CockroachDB – in a bid to help modernize mission-critical applications reliant on mainframe hardware.
The alliance aims to offer a cloud-native PostgreSQL database across hybrid environments, including IBM LinuxONE, Linux on Z, Power Systems, and Red Hat OpenShift. The unlikely pair claim that they can help enterprises move to cloud-native and Kubernetes environments without rewriting core applications, though some intermediary components may still be required.
