The 'Culture Wars' in Free Software Have Gone Out of Control
Most people "do" - as in, develop or use - Free Software because it works for them or because they care about Software Freedom. They just want to control their computing. Some vocal minority, however, reckons it can leverage or exploit Free Software to drive some niche political agenda. That's what the now-defunct "Ethical Source" camp sought to accomplish.
Since GNU and the FSF are not in the business of telling you how to vote or whether to seek abortion or whatever it has survived for over 40 years. It still promotes Free Software.
Bullying or mobbing people who support Free Software but don't agree with you on politics is counterproductive; join some political group instead and do political debates there.
I'd not want to have such people as colleagues; they might end up confronting and bullying folks in the workplace for being (or not being) vegetarian. Some people lack tact.
Patel makes a mistake by broadcasting his political leanings/beliefs. He takes the bait from people who lied about him. By doing so, he adds a non-technical dimension to an otherwise neutral company that focuses on tech. It's like RMS thinking that to apologise to the mobs which demand his ousting would somehow improve matters. Appeasement does not always work. It gives appetite to mean people.
Social control media amplifies such utterly infantile discourse, which it encourages rather than discourage (because emotional people "engage" more and get addicted to "keyboard wars"). Quit it. Do not participate. █
