What a World Would Look Like If Everyone Used Free Software Only
Freedom is about autonomy and control, not cheapness
Freedom-respecting software (or "Free Software") is software that users can collectively and individually control. In other words, they control their equipment, at least at the "software level" (or hybrid, a lot of hardware contains hard-coded programs).
In such a world privacy abuses would be a lot rarer. Because if someone added some "telemetry" to the program, then someone else would remove that from the program, then redistribute the same. Guess which one users would rather download...
This is why LibreWolf is so popular. Unlike IceWeasel, it solves a technical problem, not just a legal problem (trademarks). The Web site says:
Yes, "and freedom."
Not "Open Source".
If our aim is to take control away from the likes of GAFAM (which control Firefox at several levels), then we must insist and talk about "Free Software", not "Open Source".
As April put it earlier this week:
Freedom is what matters, not "Open". █
