Austrian Media Coverage of Luis Berenguer's (Top EPO Official) Getting Busted for Cocaine
Yesterday morning we published "How German Media Covered Cocainegate at The European Patent Office (EPO)" and said we'd contact those journalists again because they left out the EPO connection, which is critical. This wasn't some rich tourist caught by cops, it was a local official whom they busted.
"Austrian press gives more details," notes a reader.
"A salary of 20,000 euros a month is typical of a high manager at the European Patent Office," we got told, "56 years old and Spaniard are also data matching with Luis Berenguer." Not to mention many other things.
There's no doubt that this is him. Why does the media leave out/omit that? The original:
In English:
The investigators, who were only on duty for less than eight minutes that day, were able to observe how the man poured the powder onto a piece of paper and snorted it. The Spaniard did not realize that the undercover officers had already taken notice of him.As reported by Das Bild, the 56-year-old was eventually temporarily arrested and taken to the Wiesn police station. There, his personal details were recorded, and the cocaine was weighed. The package contained 1.17 grams. According to the chief investigator, this amount would be enough for "at least five snorts."
He claimed that he earned 20,000 euros a month. Based on this, the police calculated a penalty of 40,000 euros. Since he had already reached his daily limit, the Spaniard was only able to pay 10,000 euros immediately. He will now receive a letter from the Munich I Public Prosecutor’s Office, and the remaining 30,000 euros will be due. "That was definitely the most expensive line of his life," said the officer.
Does this "Public Prosecutor’s Office" in Munich not know the man is from the patent office in Munich? Surely they know or will know sooner or later. It makes authorities in Munich look somewhat complicit in covering up this embarrassment, which isn't limited to just one individual. But remember: "The European Patent Office (EPO) is a Cash Cow of Germany", as the union explained nearly 13 years ago.
Are we meant to look the other way because of the profit motive? This is a lot like the Jeffrey Epstein scandals; it turns out that it's OK for high-level officials to have sex with underage girls and in Germany one can snort cocaine and keep a top-level job, earning millions of euros while paying the media to spread lies. This is what Luis Berenguer basically does. And he's deeply connected to the EU (EUIPO), so this scandal implicates more than the EPO. █
