  • High school in Kentucky after Butlerian Jihad

    Some high schoolers I know experience chromebooks, and phones with their multitude of apps as more restrictive than freeing.

    "Ms. Anna has a flip phone," one high school boy I occasionally see in my hospital bragged to a peer. "You still do, don't you?" he asked hopefully.

    "Of course." I said. "It's all I need."

    "I wish I had a flip phone," said his friend. "All I want to use it for is texting my girlfriend."

    But that's not all the phone wants to use him for. It wants to milk his family for money to buy and replace it and for always-on data, but that's just the start. It wants to surveil him for data brokers and parents, school and police, and LLM training. It wants his movements, likes, writing style, and biometrics.
