Over a decade ago I learned the true meaning of "appraisals" and buzzwords like "competency" (or "skills") "matrix", typically promoted not by technical people but the McKinsey types who will destroy your company while pretending to have done their best. They have no qualifications (formal or otherwise) in tech and their management style suggests they don't know how to manage people, either.
