Remember the Debian DebConf6 fight? Yes, an actual physical fight.

"There is evidence of drugs around the DebConf fight too," told us a person familiar with that incident.

As a Debian user myself (on the server and my laptops), this matters to me. I need to be able to trust who builds and then maintains the software on my systems. My wife's main laptop is also running Debian.
