One thing
Have you ever suddenly realised something about yourself that provides a basis for understanding many of your quirks? Like most people, there are certain things that I find fascinating. Lots of technical things. Lots of technical ideas. Certain games. Recently I found a common thread that seems to connect most of them: that of tiny isolated worlds.

31 December 2025
Well, the year is rapidly approaching its end and i just wanted to publish one last phlog entry in 2025 to recapture a few thoughts about the state of ... well, everything.
For me personally, the year was way better than the last few. Things settled in, junior is growing and developing at a breakneck speed, the house is not THAT fast falling apart anymore and financially everything is not THAT hopeless anymore either. We did a few cool trips, and were not anything near as often sick as last year. Oh, and no catastrophes... no unscheduled hospital visits or anything like that. The year really was better.
On the computer side of things... well, i didn't have as much time as i wish to try out new things, tinkering time with a small kid is really a rare thing! But at least i could look into a couple of unixoid operating systems, played around with FreeDOS again and set up a /somewhat/ working Gentoo system. I have rescued a few computer refurbished them and handed out a few to other people.

31st December 2025 - End of Year
I am writing this in a room filled with boxes, empty book shelves and curtainless windows. Why yes, I did manage to move into a house I have bought. A first for me. It is in a different part of Solihull, a weird 'metropoliton borough' to the south and east of Birmingham. Urgh, the unpacking is frustating. I keep having to solve tetris problems to work out how to get to boxes. It is nice knowing I can do what I want to the house though. Well, so long as I keep paying the mortgage.
I managed to have a successful and fun Explorer Belt expedition with Scouts. It went very well with no issues we could not resolve. I am starting to think about running another in 2028. It will soon come along. I will be taking my group to a UK based Jamboree in the summer. That will be fun. I managed to support all of the Duke of Edinburgh expeditions last year and hoping to do the same this year. They have been a good laugh. The group has grown and I managed to help someone with complex additional needs feel secure enough to join. They seem to be having a great time. I also got an Award for Merit. There is a variety of awards which leaders can get and this is the first of the dangly ones where you wear it around the neck. I am still having some fairly pants Tuesday evenings where activities don't work. However, there have been fewer this year. Well, it feels that way.

Using Supernote Nomad offline
I am a note taker. For years, I've been searching for a good digital device that could complement my paper notebooks. I've finally found it in the Supernote Nomad. I use it completely offline without cloud-sync, and in this post, I'll explain why this is a benefit.

Cloudless Kobo Forma with KOReader
I am an reader, and for years I've been searching for a good digital e-reader to complement my paper books. I advocate for privacy-first and prefer open-source or self-hosted solutions. If that is not possible, I opt for offline solutions. Even if I don't have anything to hide, the tinkerer in me wants those things anyway. I found my ideal device in the Kobo Forma 7 years ago. Now, I use it without Kobo's cloud sync, and in this post, I'll show you how.

Hello there, I wish you all a happy new year! These are my social media posts from the last six months. I keep them here to reflect on them and also to not lose them. Social media networks come and go and are not under my control, but my domain is here to stay.
