  • The Smart Toaster

    We had a roommate living with us for a while last year. He worked in a warehouse, and when customers canceled orders or products reached the end of their ship-by date, he was allowed to take items home. One such item was a smart toaster. He immediately brought it back to the house and set it up on the kitchen counter.

    My wife and I hated it. It was massive, gobbling up a huge amount of precious counter space that we would have otherwise used for our rice cooker or our stand mixer. We already owned a toaster oven and air fryer, and we never once used the smart toaster. I have a secondary WiFi network with AP isolation for smart devices, but our roommate immediately connected the toaster to the main WiFi network, exposing our personal devices to potential attacks that could enter through the toaster' weak security. However, he used the toaster all the time, so we couldn't bring ourselves to ask him to store it until he moved out again.

      I really need to stop looking at comments on normie social media like Facebook. This has absolutely soured my perception of other humans. People are so angry about things that don't actually matter and everyone on all sides is such a hardline ideologue you can't even talk to them.

      Who fucking cares how people dress? Who they have relationships with? Who they fuck? Why is there always so much toxic vitriol about this?
