Long regarded as somewhat of a taboo subject most people speak about behind closed doors or inside the car, "DEI" is inherently about making racial and gender patterns better reflect society's. At IBM it became associated with the cheapening of the workers, or the lessening of the median salaries. The general person who never experienced this probably does not have a strong opinion on it, but some people do.
