It's the "headcount" spin. If you buy 10,000 workers with some company and still see workforce decreasing overall, then you fired or pushed out well 10,000; the net loss can also indicate you hire fewer than left/retired.

So the main question is, did IBM just fire 800 people?

We cannot see even one single news site covering that.

I was about to get an offer at Confluent for a Solution Engineer role, but the HR told me that hiring has been stopped because of IBM acquisition. Anyone else heard about that ? Any chance to resune hiring ?

The company has real cash problems ( check its finances), and recently hired a new C-level HR who ran all her previous companies to the ground.
