when i say the summer buzzes
when i say the summer buzzes / i mean the cicadas scream all night / hell, part of the day, and the frogs / make a cacophony of vibrations, so much / that you gotta pop the window open a hair / and let it wash on over your hot, sticky skin-you ain't never slept so good, lulled to sleep / by the army of insects and creatures calling to each other; they got a party line, ya know / grandma always said, it's elmer on the tin roof / calling howdy y'all to his buddies / when the croaks deafened the night

Why I have returned to wearing a wrist watch
Last week, I bought again a wrist watch. I decided this consciously, in spite of that I have a watch in my pocket, on my smart phone. The reason is that I want to reduce attention capture from the phone.
I am thinking since some time how to reduce the attention capture from the smart phone, especially its addictive-by-design elements.
Like many addictive things, it is not easy to use the phone consciously every time. One reason for this is that using the phone often sneaks in when one is not attentive - say, bored or tired. It did become a kind of a reflex for me to pull out the phone, and check news, for example. This is not good, since it diminishes the time I am attentive to the here and now.
For me, it is far easier to turn it off entirely, sometimes. I take it as quality time with myself. Or just at times when I think it is better to have full concentration, like riding the bike in dense city traffic, having an important conversation, or just having breakfast with my partner at home.

the paranoid times: OFFLFIRSOCH 2026 entry
For some unknown reason, I always turn to the internet or, in the best case, a browser when I need a random, unique alphanumeric value such as the one used for a secure password. This should be an offline thing, perfectly suitable for a CLI tool. So I created a Perl script [1] that performs exactly that. Check out the repository for usage info.

silly standards sunday: fursona schema
it's this obscure little project for a standardized way to expose fursona information on your website, via a .well-known URL!! so, the same way you might link your website address to your Nostr or ATProto profile, you can also expose information about your fursonas!
what usecase this might have isn't... particularly clear?? but it tickles my brain in a pleasant way, and I assume some other nerds and small web-ers here might find it neat :)

the one about LLMs in programming
being in programming circles, I often hear about how good LLMs are at programming. hell, I've even seen it leak into non-developer circles.
I won't lie, their code is not... the worst I've ever seen -- I've seen people do much worse, LLM code can be surprisingly good... their code can also be terrible slop, though! and so, a person has to watch over the process and review the code it produces -- and therein lies my issue.
I went into programming because I like writing code! I like solving problems and I love trying to come up with concise-yet-readable ways to express these solutions!
[...]
I'm sure someone would be quick to point out that I can also have LLMs do code review -- and sure, I absolutely can! having seen how github's copilot performs at my job, though, I'm not sure I'd be able to trust them. too often does copilot miss anything but the most obvious issues, while occasionally also hallucinating nonsense elsewhere.
