What happened to journalism?
Well, they say slop lessened the incentive to do any, right? But the crisis predates the LLM extravaganza, it's connected to other factors, and blaming "ad blockers" (page sanitisers) is lame.
They typically say: 1) we need to complete with slop (plagiarism); 2) Google plagiarises our work and calls it "AI", then sends us no visitors; 3) publishers fire, not hire.
Is a publication going to earn credibility (or new audience) by publishing; 1) sponsored spam; 2) buzzwords all over; 3) promotion of Ponzi schemes?
No, it won't work. In the long run it's an accelerator of demise, but The Register MS is deep in debt and losing money fast. █
