Social Control Media is a Giant Waste of Time (and There Are No Future Remedies for This)

posted by Roy Schestowitz on May 26, 2026

Digesting or metabolising time is its goal

By its very nature and design, Social Control Media is addictive and aims for "engagement". As one who has used some form of Social Control Media for over 20 years (I started in Digg.com around February 2005; I rose to 17th in the site's rankings within years - it felt like a computer game because of gamification!) I have firsthand experience of how Social Control Media impacts one's day, from one's waking moments until a transient "goodnight".

What makes Social Control Media so bad is that it gives a false sense of speed - you probably type short messages to it, then assume it's all done. But then come replies and replies to replies, plus a sense of curiosity associated with the "rankings" or "ratings" of one's posts ("likes", "favourites", "shares", "boosts", whatever!), or other people's replies to replies to replies...

Put another way, for any word you type into Social Control Media you might be forced or mentally compelled to read at least 10, then go on and on and on...

It's money and time down the drain. Companies that run Social Control Networks typically lose money, not earn money, and the activity in Social Control Media is not educational, it often involves people fighting one another or just preaching to the choir.

Social Control Media is a giant toll on society as it reduces productivity, raises hostility, and encourages people to do or say the "Darnest Things" (that earn more attention in an "attention economy" as some have dubbed it).

People who avoid Social Control Media are barely visible or completely invisible in Social Control Media, but that does not mean they don't exist or don't do anything.

Social Control Media is considered unhealthy to young people, but it is also collectively unhealthy to nations and nation-building.
