Why GNU and FSF Will Choose AV1 Over AV2 (It's More Widely Supported)
In a rather disturbing and astounding fashion generally good Web browsers were culling good multimedia formats while promoting and protecting GAFAM ones. One more recent example involved Mozilla and its treatment of Ogg, which is the format we used to encode (Vorbis, not Theora) audio files/videos of Richard Stallman (RMS) as recently as last year.
In a recent series (links below this article) we explained why the FSF (or GNU), with the 'blessing' (endorsement rather) of RMS, decided to sort of consolidate around or 'settle' on AV1.
There have since then been a release of AV2 - a subject we intend to explore separately some time soon. It'll be a new series and that needs proper preparation and discussion/s.
"I just finished reading the last article in the AV1 series," one reader told us, "and it looked great! I always appreciate y'all's collected demeanor when writing articles, it makes we want to read the next one sooner!"
We understand that more videos are still being converted and can be viewed/accessed in the neat portal, which does not require JavaScript or fancy Web browsers (bloatware that can also render Web pages, sometimes).
"I’m still steadily working through the video conversions as time allows," one of those involved told us, "and I should have more to share on that in the next few days or weeks from GNU themselves officially."
We'll be writing a bit about what AV2 means to them. At the moment it seems a bit premature to discuss this (there are still AV1 conversions going on), but last night RMS told us (and others): "I think we should be rather conservative about this. Many in our community use old versions of systems. As long as AV1 continues to work on new versions of widely used systems, let's stick with it."
So for the foreseeable future they'll stick with AV1. █
