Tour Alberta 2026
This past year has been a bit of a whirlwind. Between starting one job[1], completing the 2025 Tour[2], then in the fall starting another job[3] where I pivoted back into hands-on development, only to find myself in the midst of the greatest upheaval the tech industry has ever seen[a], honestly, it's all been a lot.

An Altoid tin astrology clock
This year, cyberdecks have become a trend on TikTok. These are minified, custom-built computers, typically running on a single-board computer like a Raspberry Pi and often made from upcycled materials. The trend has been particularly popular among young women, who have been retro-fitting childhood toys to make personalized computers. It's moved beyond niche circles, too, with coverage on the topic by CNN and Newsweek.

Arduino Turns the UNO Q Into a Retro Gaming Powerhouse with New Arcade Bundl
Arduino has announced the launch of a new educational hardware-and-courseware bundle, designed with (almost) everything you need to build your own Arduino UNO Q-powered games console in a weekend: the Arduino UNO Q Arcade bundle.
"The UNO Q Arcade bundle [is a rewarding new way to start building with UNO Q, following a complete step-by-step tutorial towards a clear objective – and gaining hands-on tech experience as you go," the Arduino team says of the company's latest launch, which follows the same format as the earlier Arduino UNO Q DIY Synth bundle. "Now anyone can build their own arcade cabinet, in just a few hours of fun."
Launched back in October last year, at the same time as Arduino announced its acquisition by Qualcomm, the Arduino UNO Q is a major departure for the UNO family: while it includes an on-board microcontroller, in the form of the STMicroelectronics STM32U585, it also features an application-class Qualcomm Dragonwing QRB2210 quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 system-on-chip. In other words, it's a fully-functional single-board computer — and comes running a Linux-based operating system out-of-the-box.

Re: Gemini...plus?
What you've notice is the bane of the Open Source community. We tout the fact that FLOSS is flexible as it allows for disagreements to turn into new inventions. But what we often don't talk about is how much time is wasted on projects that _shouldn't_ really exist.
When working in a for-profit or commercial framework, there is always a give and take on what gets implemented. In many cases non-developers are making decisions but if you happen to work at a place that really knows what they are doing the ones working on the solution are part of the solution. There are have been many projects I've worked on where I really wanted to see a feature added but it was shot down. Not because the idea was bad, not because the idea wouldn't be used. The time and effort and place and time just weren't the right fit. Did users still use the software? Of course! Were their lives made much worse without the feature? Of course not. In the grand scheme of things the world is not much different than had my features been implemented.

Rogallo v1.0.0
Given that it's now a daily driver for me, that is has enough features, and feels stable enough: I think it's time to promote my terminal-based Gemini client to v1.0.0.

* Gemini (Primer) links can be opened using Gemini software. It's like the World Wide Web but a lot lighter.
