RMS Won the Argument and Now GNU Wins Over Computer Users
Richard Stallman's (RMS) personal legacy is technical and philosophical alike.
They called him "crazy" because he wanted to change the (computing) world. He wanted the "hacker culture" (no relation to breaking computer security) back. But looking at adoption of GNU/Linux in the "final" frontier - desktops and laptops or "thick clients" that are neither servers nor portables (those have long been dominated by Linux) - RMS is getting his way. He started it all when he was about 30. Now he is 73. He can look back at nearly 43 years of GNU and say, "I was right..."
Of course cultists and GAFAM front groups (such as 'Linux' Foundation) will antagonise this because copyleft is bad for their hoarding masters. But the community fights back. At the end, just like in the mid-90s, geeks gravitate towards sharing [1, 2]. Microsoft in the meantime is circling down the drain, mostly in secret. It won't be the last opponent to (or of) freedom. █
