Imagine a World Where Nobody Fights for Software (and Computing) Freedom
On August 30th last year (exactly a year ago) I wrote about our activism for feral/domestic birds. Yesterday morning one of 'our' birds came with an egg attached. They are multiplying. The activism has paid off and we're left alone; those days of occasional nuisance from a weed-smoking neighbour came to an abrupt end two months ago.
Yesterday we fed many flocks of birds; nobody opposes this anymore.
In general, many people give up on causes without even fighting for these causes. If you give up right from the very start, loss is assured. Otherwise, perhaps after persistent advocacy, you may get your way.
When GNU/Linux began 40+ years ago it seemed like an impossible task in a very hostile atmosphere. The "industry" had already 'decided' that proprietary things were the way to go, restrictions (first passwords, now a lot more) were inevitable and desirable [1, 2], now they want some "age verification" on by default or even by mandate.
The community keeps fighting back, so some of these ambitions are delayed or watered down. If nobody fought back, things would be so much worse for everybody. █
