Microsoft Layoffs Perpetual But Silent, People Pushed Out Using Pressure or Incentive Schemes

posted by Roy Schestowitz on Aug 30, 2026

Earlier this month we named some of the programs (e.g. Global Voluntary Separation Agreement (GVSA) [1, 2]) currently utilised by Microsoft to tell Microsofters to leave 'voluntarily' or to push them to leave rather than get the boot. 2-3 days ago some insiders spoke about the status quo:

When is the next Microsoft layoff?

2 days ago someone wrote about a "Microsoft pip vs gvsa strange situation", explaining: "Had recent manager change in reorg and older manager put me on 70/0. Got piped recently, with a choice in between between gvsa and pip. I am from IDC, have not completed one year. With gvsa I am getting approx 10days as last working day after signing gvsa and voluntary retirement(gvsa) makes me approx 30 days short of 1st vesting. Gvsa gives me 45 days paid out notice + 16 weeks pay and Pip just gives 8-10 weeks of extended employment then it is over. Pip will be not converted most probably. While pip can help coast over first vesting but I m not sure if within pip of 8-10 weeks I will be terminated or not not sure about microsoft policy. If I take pip I get terminated in between I will lose both stocks and gvsa both. All in all when putting financials pip gives me approx 4.5-5 lakhs (post tax)more if vesting happens otherwise gvsa will be better. While new manager suggests that 8-10 weeks pip should be fixed and will not be eliminated in between, but can't trust the words after 70/0 rating where I was not at all indicated throughout year. that I have not faced this and not sure if I would be able to distribute between load of prep interview, scoring a new job and pip work and considering almost near year end, I'm more and more relying on gvsa even though it costs me some money."

Other people report the same:

Same boat. I asked for 3 days extension for gvsa. Manager said he will try, no update yet

So it's PIP or leave (or leave or PIP). You're finished either way, they won't call it "layoffs".
