GNU Turns 43 This Month, GNU/Linux Turns 35 Next Year
MCC Interim Linux is from 1992. A former colleague made it.
"Old wild men" waited for a miracle. GNU needed a lot of luck and endless work (on shoestring budget) back in the 80s and by the year 1992 (GNU/Linux, MCC) a lot of the hard work was already done, including the GPL. There was enough to bootstrap a complete system in freedom and within years, aided by software like Apache, GNU/Linux was spreading like wildfire, initially in single-purpose servers during the dotcom boom. In 2008 Android (OHA) came along and within years it spread Linux to billions of users. Now we see GNU/Linux coming to more and more desktops and laptops. It seems like no area of computing has not been impacted by the GNU/Linux revolution.
The moral of the story is, never give up. If enough people share the same desire and cause, anything is attainable. █
