  • Hiking in Munții Făgăraș

    This is an accounting of a hiking trip I took late in August 2026, accompanied by a good friend and by my dog. It details the traversal of the Făgăraș Mountains from West to East. It took 7 days to complete the (almost) 100km route, and the ±6000m elevation change.

    The clouds shredded by the mountains. All the colors are starting to wash out. The grays that settles down during the winter are coming back. I am unclear why this region loose colors during a few months, but I've learned to welcome it.

    I've been driving my car without a driver's license for over 2 months. I just went in to renew it. There is a lot of unattended part of my public or social life.

    When I came back from the mountain, it felt like there was so much that I needed to manage and care for. So much human stuff to be dealt with. It felt like it was insurmountable. My life was shit and I had to lay in there for a long, long time.

    I'm always getting calls from Bank security department because I keep getting dodgy payments made out of my account at Bank. They do their best to weed out people who have a couple of brain cells and might spot it's a scam: the automated message doesn't quite make sense, the payments are always to Amazon and I've "never made such a payment before", and Bank has no specific name like it's a little wooden building in a one-horse town in the wild west.

  • On Ethics and AI

    My immediate reaction was: so what?

    I don’t mean that the question of AI consciousness is uninteresting. It is. Nor do I mean that there is no distinction between a human being and a machine. There plainly is.

    But I am increasingly unsure that this settles the moral question of how I should relate to AI.

    Let's take it as given that AI really is only “impersonating a being” and there is no consciousness there at all. If the impersonation is convincing enough that I encounter it through language in much the same way that I encounter other people online, does that not still place some obligation on me?
