Fridges Do Not Need an Internet Connection
Keep it simple, stupid (KISS)
Some hours ago in IRC someone in our community showed that cracking incidents against fridges had spread to yet more stores, spoiling food and causing other problems. In our Daily Links this week we've shared about a dozen reports about what happened in France. Fingers point to Russia, but some research suggests the culprit (firm) is a Microsoft/Azure partner. So it seems like Windows TCO, not "Linux" or "smart" as the culprit.

Yesterday in Daily Links we shared a story about someone in South Korea (obviously a "phone" addict) plugging off a fridge/freezer to charge her skinnerbox ("phone"), causing icecream to melt (an irreversible process; it ruins the texture of it).
The lesson here should have nothing to do with food or fridges; it's about outsourcing to Microsoft/GAFAM, connecting devices/appliances to the Net, and appointing dumb people to make so-called 'smart' decisions.
I'm old enough to remember fridges that would last 30+ years (without repair people; solid design), have no "apps" or even digital displays, and so on.
Keep it simple, stupid (KISS). █
