r_schestowitzWhat has every security expert taught from the dawn of time? "If they have control of the hardware the battle is over" which is why physical security is so important that many high security places use everything from airgaps to epoxy in USB ports to deny physical access.....well guess what? The potential threat HAS COMPLETE AND TOTAL PHYSICAL ACCESS which makes whether they hand you some source or not? Worth exactly fuck and all. Lets sayJun 16 18:09
r_schestowitzthey DO hand you the source for whatever OS they are running, be it Windows, Linux, fuck OS/2 Warp...question....how EXACTLY are you gonna show THAT was the code running during the critical voting period? How EXACTLY do you know that they didn't simply insert some malware while it was under their control and simply remove it before letting you look at the machine? r_schestowitzThis is something that FOSS fans really REALLY have a problem with, they simply cannot connect dots and tell the difference between security and security theater...after all you have the source for the TiVo, is it secure? You had the code for Bash for 17+ years...did that keep it from being exploited? Source code isn't pixie dust, it won't magically make anything more or less secure, it is nothing but the code that IF is the correct codeJun 16 18:09
r_schestowitzAND was not compiled with a malicious compiler will give you a program out the other end which you can compare to the source in your hand...that's it folks, that is ALL IT DOES and buying into the bullshit that when a potential bad actor has hardware control that source code makes that scenario safe? r_schestowitzIf you could use open hardware too, you'd only need to trust the people setting it up.Jun 16 18:10
r_schestowitzSo, if a citizen is concerned and wants to try to investigate the security of the system...right now they need the source code from Microsoft (good luck getting that!) -- and they need to trust that it's correct. They also need hardware schematics and firmware code from someone like Diebold (never gonna happen) -- and they need to trust THOSE are correct. Then on top of all that, they've gotta go get involved with the local electionsJun 16 18:10

You don't have to get code or schematics out some major corporation that isn't willing to give it up. You already have those parts. You just have to go make sure the local elections commission isn't making any changes while they set it all up. The former would needJun 16 18:11

r_schestowitzFor the States that wanted to "modernize", the Fed gave them money (Help America Vote Act) to do so. In steps Diebold and other companies with solutions that are 90% there. All they need to do is tweak up their existing ATM machine code or whatever. That sounds like a great deal because if it is good enough for an ATM, then it must be good enough for voting, right? You have election officials with money to burn and vendors who claim theyJun 16 18:12
r_schestowitzhave COTS solutions to purchase. In my state you had an election official talking about how great these were, and when pressed on the issue of verifying whether the machines are accurate, she pointed out how easy it was to do a recount by clicking on the "Recount" button in the software. r_schestowitz"Don't attribute to malice"?! Recount button, LOL. More appropriate is the saying America was founded on: "power corrupts". There is no reason to take anything on trust where verification is so relatively trivial. We should trust Diebold, when it would be so easy for them to hand over the source code? They think their precious proprietary secrets are more important than the integrity of our voting tabulation? They don't think copyright, asJun 16 18:12

r_schestowitzIt's like making a large cash purchase. Both sides count the money carefully, for several reasons. First is to make sure there aren't any mistakes. r_schestowitzThat's how my state's voting works, pencil marks on scantron sheets fed into the machine, result available as quickly as someone wants to push a "results" button, paper ballots spot audited over the next week or so. If you incorrectly fill out your ballot the machine emits a foul noise and kicks the ballot back, or if accepted it emits two happy beeps and auto-ejects into a locked box for later auditing.Jun 16 18:16
r_schestowitzWhenever voting comes up the comments are always hyper provincial, that the posters home state uses a windows PC intentionally designed to be unauditable, but there are numerous less brain dead states that don't have the slightest problem not using windows and auditing a proprietary system.Jun 16 18:16
r_schestowitzI'm about 99% certain the antique scantron machines do NOT run windows. They are programmed using scan cards, and as kids we went to great effort (no longer needed online) to find out that the first card read at power up sets the program and/or key so theres no way to reprogram while in use. Of course times may have changed since 1990, but fundamentally they're pretty simple machines and .edu majors aren't the brightest so KISS principleJun 16 18:16
r_schestowitzreigns. The public schools use the same scantron model machines for multiple guess tests, presumably piggy backed onto some giant state purchase contract. Presumably if thousands of high school kids can't hack the machines, tens of 80 year old voter overseer aren't going to figure it out.Jun 16 18:16
r_schestowitzThe main way to hack an election locally is to get the illegal voters out, both outright illegals, and dead people and non-voters. I've pretty much stopped voting, anyone who wants to show up and vote for me, can.Jun 16 18:16
r_schestowitzI talked to a senior citizen vote helper and there is a lot of behind the scenes stuff for anti-fraud that is interesting. For example two old people sign off on packages of serial numbered sequential ballots, so if the right sigs aren't on a receipt then there are questions if that serial number range suddenly shows up at audit time, or shows up at the wrong facility. This leads to insane delays if a site runs out of ballots. Also theyJun 16 18:16
r_schestowitzshuffle and randomize packs of ballots at a time, then the old people add a new handwritten sequential number and log them, so if serial numbers 250-300 all show up in the system simultaneously at 7:59 right before polls close the shit will hit the fan, also if the old people signed off up to seq number 750 then anything found in the audit box over 800 would be kind of suspicious...Jun 16 18:16
r_schestowitzNote that some cultures think honest elections are a universal good, whereas other cultural areas are going to see them as an impediment to be worked around, so the mere existence of proven long experienced ways to electronically run a fair election doesn't mean crooks will want them or do anything to encourage fair elections.Jun 16 18:16
r_schestowitzThis also assumes elections mean anything other than tweedle dee vs tweedle dum, we have a one party system with two PR campaigns etc. In a lot of ways the primaries matter enormously more than the general elections, and of course some primaries are more important than others, etc.Jun 16 18:16
r_schestowitzI am just barely old enough to remember ancient mechanical voting machines from when my parents voted. Crazy things. Basically mechanical counters with hidden counts and lever interlocking systems, pull like ten little levers some interacting with each other then pull the big lever and hope for the best. The optical systems are much simpler and more reliable.Jun 16 18:16

r_schestowitzAre you suggesting that illegal immigrants routinely show up to the polls? Because that would make approximately no sense: illegal immigrants tend to do everything they can to avoid interacting with the government, because they know that to do so is to risk getting caught.Jun 16 18:16
r_schestowitzAs far as the dead people and non-voters showing up, you need to explain why there have been fewer than 20 cases of in-person voter fraud prosecuted in the last decade. If, for example, you're contending that there is a massively corrupt Democratic Party machine in Chicago, then why is it that Republican governor Bruce Rauner hasn't gone after it aggressively?Jun 16 18:16

r_schestowitz"I looked into this quite a bit as my home state was trying to pass one of those voter ID measures a few years back. Nobody researching this issue has ever found even one single documented instance of this kind of voter fraud. People don't submit fraudulent votes in person, except by accident (ie, signing the wrong line in the poll book.) The risk is too high, and the reward of a single vote is far too low. "Jun 16 18:17
r_schestowitz"There are other ways to hack an election, my government has been implementing them in the name of small government and stopping the non-existent voter fraud. Phone up people who are likely to vote for the opposition, tell them that their polling station has moved. Since they got caught last time, downsize the non-partisan election oversight and also ban them from even mentioning any investigations. Put polling stations in the right spotsJun 16 18:18
r_schestowitzso it is easier for your supporters to vote and harder for the oppositions supporters to vote (in the name of saving money). I usually vote in the advance polls as being self-employed it is hard to find time to vote on election day. Last federal election the advance polling station was 30 miles away in the wrong direction, for the provincial election it was on the way to town and so easy to use. And last, go on about imaginary voter fraudJun 16 18:18
r_schestowitzand make onerous demands for ID. No more showing up with 2 pieces of government ID and a utility bill for my wife (who doesn't drive), now we have to spend $75 for another piece of ID, Provincial, because her federal picture ID doesn't have her address, nor does her provincial (medical) ID."Jun 16 18:18
r_schestowitz"My personal experience, which is likely pretty normal, is you vote while in college and they have like two 90 year olds who are deaf in the basement of a 1000 person dorm complex only reachable by a locked door that is occasionally propped open and the oldest least reliable scanning machine in the fleet looks like someone tossed it down the stairs, and they tend to vote for the "D" PR team of the one-party. Vs in my 2nd/3rd richest subburbJun 16 18:19
r_schestowitzin the region and the polling place is 2 blocks away at the elementary school and they have 4 volunteers per roughly 300 person aldermanic district and a brand new vote scanning machine and they tend to vote "R". But we're all "equal" right?"Jun 16 18:19
r_schestowitz"Jun 16 18:20
r_schestowitzIn my home state in 2004, I took strong notice of the fact that it took me approximately 20 minutes to vote in the mostly white genteel suburb, while a coworker of mine from a not-at-all-genteel urban precinct spent 2.5 hours waiting in line. And apparently it got worse in the not-at-all-genteel district as time went on. By complete coincidence, the secretary of state who controlled little details like how many voting machines were in whichJun 16 18:20
r_schestowitzprecincts just happened to be the state campaign manager for the Republican candidate for president. And the not-at-all-genteel urban precinct was chock full of die-hard Democrats.Jun 16 18:20
r_schestowitzAnother technique seen more recently: The secretary of state has the tie-breaking vote on all of the county-wide elections councils (which are evenly split between Democrats and Republicans) that determine when early voting is open. Ours was voting for extended hours in areas which tended to support his party, and really short hours in areas which tended to oppose his party, until a federal court ruled he couldn't do that.Jun 16 18:20

r_schestowitzIndeed. Whether a voting computer runs free software or proprietary software does not matter for the voters, because voters are not running the software on their own computer.Jun 16 18:21
r_schestowitzIf the software is free, then others can make use of the four freedoms to change and modify that software to run on their own computers, and share the software with their friends. But none of that makes any difference at the election. The issues are entirely different.Jun 16 18:21

r_schestowitzThat's simply incorrect. Being able to verify what the machine is doing and what code it's running is very important, because voting affects us all. It doesn't matter if it happens on our own computers or not; software freedom is important in government.Jun 16 18:21
r_schestowitzIt should simply be illegal for the government to use proprietary software. If existing free software doesn't do the job, it could do the world a favor by creating it and releasing it as free software.Jun 16 18:21

r_schestowitzThere is no multi-million dollar contract in paper ballots for anyone. There is for electronic voting.Jun 16 18:21
r_schestowitzReally, though, electronic voting makes formal what most American voters have suspected for a long time, that voting for change is a scam, and that voting only exists to fabricate the illusion of consent. With electronic voting, there remains no way for citizens to challenge the assumption of the legitimacy of the vote. There's no way to verify the ballot trail, there are no recounts.Jun 16 18:21
r_schestowitzThere's also the second dimension, that of the Citizens United decision, which redoubles the illegitimacy of voting in America. Layer that on top of the sham of electronic voting and you have more grievance than the Founding Fathers ever had to form the United States of America in the first place.Jun 16 18:21

r_schestowitzDefeatist attitudes like yours are what allows the system you are so frustrated with to continue. You say "Opt out and don't vote", then extoll the virtues of high voter turnout... the irony is palpable. The current system might "pragmatically lead to awful results", but (at least to you) not voting demonstrably does.Jun 16 18:29
r_schestowitzNothing could make fans of the status quo happier than you not voting and not expressing your opinion at the ballot box. Since you are obviously frustrated with the current state of things, I don't understand why you want to make them happy by not voting.Jun 16 18:30

r_schestowitz    YOUR VOTE MATTERS.Jun 16 18:30
r_schestowitzNo, it doesn't. Not in America. The federal government has completely changed hands twice since 2000. Nothing has changed in the policy trajectory. There has been not even a small inflection in the downward slide of the middle class, and the stratospheric accretion of the fortunes of the ultra-wealthy. The CIA has tortured people to death. The NSA has unilaterally blown the 4th Amendment away (as written, it's supposed to be hard to changeJun 16 18:30
r_schestowitzthe Constitution, isn't it?). The biggest banks on Wall Street were all caught red-handed in the LIBOR scandal and all of them are still in business, and their CEOs did not go to prison. Classes of citizens have not yet been rounded up en masse and sent to camps (Note: I said 'citizens' and not 'people,' because getting rounded up does happen to illegal immigrants), but things could hardly be worse for a country that once called itself, "Jun 16 18:30
r_schestowitzLand of the Free, Home of the Brave."Jun 16 18:30
r_schestowitzNow, not voting does not mean doing nothing. Doing nothing is bad, and we can all agree with that as a more general statement. But voting is a complete waste of time, money, and effort when the system is this broken. Doing something that is not voting to change the status quo is vital. There are many people in America who have the skills to do something. I submit that what is now required in America is a revolution, as defined [merriam-Jun 16 18:30

r_schestowitzIt's obvious from you're comments that you feel completely disenfranchised, and I can't say I disagree with your reasons. The trends that you speak of are definitely real, and your political process is in definite need of some reform.Jun 16 18:31
r_schestowitzThat said, you are wrong about your vote. Actually getting out and voting can be a revolutionary act. If the 40% to 45% of Americans like yourself who decide not to vote actually exercised that right, you would have your revolution.Jun 16 18:31
r_schestowitzAll it requires of you is a little of your time. You don't even have to sacrifice anything, and the system is already in place to effect the change you're looking for.Jun 16 18:31
r_schestowitzNo violence, risk to life and freedom, or even extraordinary effort, required. Just excercise your rights! Imagine how different the political landscape in the USA would be if people got as excited about their right to vote as they do about their right to bear arms!Jun 16 18:31
r_schestowitzI would like to introduce the mechanism of your revolution to you. It is called "Vote Splitting" [wikipedia.org]. You may not have heard of it before, but it's a common thing in countries with more than Two political parties.Jun 16 18:31
r_schestowitzLets do some math. According to some sources [wikipedia.org], you have a voter turnout of about 55%, so we'll work with that. Let's call the two major parties A (51% of the vote) and B (49% of the vote). That means that 28% of the eligible population voted for A, and about 27% of the voting population voted for B. Now, assume that a Independent candidate C runs, and really appeals to all those who didn't vote before. With a 100% voterJun 16 18:31
r_schestowitzturnout, Candidate C could get 45% of the vote, and win easily!Jun 16 18:31
r_schestowitzNow, obviously a 100% voter turnout is unrealistic, and the other parties would probably benefit some too. The point is that it is possible. As part of the established political process, the roadmap is even there for how it works, and a smooth transition of power would be probable. (Either that, or the people who really run the show would be forced into the open... probably precipitating the armed revolution you seem to expect.)Jun 16 18:31
r_schestowitzAll it requires is an abolition of apathy, and overthrowing the defeatist attitude of the disenfranchised like yourself.Jun 16 18:31
r_schestowitzEffecting real policy change doesn't even require voter turnout that extreme. As I said in my other post, when third-party or independent candidates start to get popular, the mainstream candidates shift their policies to attract those votes.Jun 16 18:31
r_schestowitzSeriously, get out and vote. Vote for a third-party, and encourage everyone else to do the same. Voter apathy is one of the root causes of the mess you're in, and your participation can help fix it.Jun 16 18:31
r_schestowitzIf you and the other ~45% of the population can't take a couple of hours every couple years to engage with your political process now, your "American Republic 2.0" will probably end up as much a "Republic" (and just as "Democratic") as the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" [wikipedia.org]Jun 16 18:31

r_schestowitzWhat has every security expert taught from the dawn of time? "If they have control of the hardware the battle is over" which is why physical security is so important that many high security places use everything from airgaps to epoxy in USB ports to deny physical access.....well guess what? r_schestowitzIt's about reducing the number of attack vectors.Jun 16 17:10
r_schestowitzUsing proprietary software for voting, you have to trust the software and the hardware and the people setting it up.Jun 16 17:10
r_schestowitzUsing open software, you need to only trust the hardware and the people setting it up.Jun 16 17:10
r_schestowitzIf you could use open hardware too, you'd only need to trust the people setting it up.Jun 16 17:10
r_schestowitzSo, if a citizen is concerned and wants to try to investigate the security of the system...right now they need the source code from Microsoft (good luck getting that!) -- and they need to trust that it's correct. They also need hardware schematics and firmware code from someone like Diebold (never gonna happen) -- and they need to trust THOSE are correct. Then on top of all that, they've gotta go get involved with the local electionsJun 16 17:10
r_schestowitzcommission to verify all of this is deployed and set up properly. But if we were using open hardware and open software, that would skip the first two requirements in that chain. You don't have to get code or schematics out some major corporation that isn't willing to give it up. You already have those parts. You just have to go make sure the local elections commission isn't making any changes while they set it all up. The former would needJun 16 17:11

It's corporate welfare, restrictive, doesn't promote education, and you'll never really be able to check what it does or how it does it. You're beholden to some scummy corporation."Jun 16 17:11
r_schestowitz"This is the US government, though: They're beholden to scummy corporations for almost everything, from bombers to drones to websites to roadways to space flight. Ever since Ronald Reagan, they've been positively allergic to the idea of hiring civil servants to do work for the public good."Jun 16 17:11
r_schestowitz"Jun 16 17:11
r_schestowitzNo, it isn't that insidious. You had the embarrassing debacle of Florida in 2000 with all the butterfly ballots, hanging chads, recounts, not allowing recounts, etc. Clearly all this would never have happened if it was all electronic, etc., etc. This is the 21st Century and all; it's embarrassing that we're so behind the times, etc. We must do something!Jun 16 17:11
r_schestowitzFor the States that wanted to "modernize", the Fed gave them money (Help America Vote Act) to do so. In steps Diebold and other companies with solutions that are 90% there. All they need to do is tweak up their existing ATM machine code or whatever. That sounds like a great deal because if it is good enough for an ATM, then it must be good enough for voting, right? You have election officials with money to burn and vendors who claim theyJun 16 17:12
r_schestowitzhave COTS solutions to purchase. In my state you had an election official talking about how great these were, and when pressed on the issue of verifying whether the machines are accurate, she pointed out how easy it was to do a recount by clicking on the "Recount" button in the software. There's that whole "don't attribute to malice. . . ." saying that is appropriate here.Jun 16 17:12

r_schestowitz"Don't attribute to malice"?! They don't think copyright, asJun 16 17:12
r_schestowitzextreme as it is, is good enough for them? No way! We are the customers, and in this matter, it's our way or the highway. Hand over the source code and all other documentation, or we don't buy. That's the way it should be.Jun 16 17:12
r_schestowitzIt's like making a large cash purchase. Both sides count the money carefully, for several reasons. First is to make sure there aren't any mistakes. But also, it's to show that if any deliberate shortchanging is going on, it WILL be detected, so don't even think of trying it.Jun 16 17:12

r_schestowitzThe only useful electronic addition to this process is to use bubble-sheet versions of the paper ballots and count the bubble-sheet votes as voters are putting them into the box. And then compare the electronic count to the hand count in enough places to know the electronic count is accurate. I'd be supportive of making these electronic vote counters open source, but the very thing that makes computers useful tools (ease of changing data,Jun 16 17:13

r_schestowitzThat's how my state's voting works, pencil marks on scantron sheets fed into the machine, result available as quickly as someone wants to push a "results" button, paper ballots spot audited over the next week or so. If you incorrectly fill out your ballot the machine emits a foul noise and kicks the ballot back, or if accepted it emits two happy beeps and auto-ejects into a locked box for later auditing.Jun 16 17:16
r_schestowitzWhenever voting comes up the comments are always hyper provincial, that the posters home state uses a windows PC intentionally designed to be unauditable, but there are numerous less brain dead states that don't have the slightest problem not using windows and auditing a proprietary system.Jun 16 17:16
r_schestowitzI'm about 99% certain the antique scantron machines do NOT run windows. They are programmed using scan cards, and as kids we went to great effort (no longer needed online) to find out that the first card read at power up sets the program and/or key so theres no way to reprogram while in use. Of course times may have changed since 1990, but fundamentally they're pretty simple machines and .edu majors aren't the brightest so KISS principleJun 16 17:16
r_schestowitzreigns. The public schools use the same scantron model machines for multiple guess tests, presumably piggy backed onto some giant state purchase contract. Presumably if thousands of high school kids can't hack the machines, tens of 80 year old voter overseer aren't going to figure it out.Jun 16 17:16
r_schestowitzThe main way to hack an election locally is to get the illegal voters out, both outright illegals, and dead people and non-voters. I've pretty much stopped voting, anyone who wants to show up and vote for me, can.Jun 16 17:16
r_schestowitzI talked to a senior citizen vote helper and there is a lot of behind the scenes stuff for anti-fraud that is interesting. For example two old people sign off on packages of serial numbered sequential ballots, so if the right sigs aren't on a receipt then there are questions if that serial number range suddenly shows up at audit time, or shows up at the wrong facility. This leads to insane delays if a site runs out of ballots. Also theyJun 16 17:16
r_schestowitzshuffle and randomize packs of ballots at a time, then the old people add a new handwritten sequential number and log them, so if serial numbers 250-300 all show up in the system simultaneously at 7:59 right before polls close the shit will hit the fan, also if the old people signed off up to seq number 750 then anything found in the audit box over 800 would be kind of suspicious...Jun 16 17:16
r_schestowitzNote that some cultures think honest elections are a universal good, whereas other cultural areas are going to see them as an impediment to be worked around, so the mere existence of proven long experienced ways to electronically run a fair election doesn't mean crooks will want them or do anything to encourage fair elections.Jun 16 17:16
r_schestowitzThis also assumes elections mean anything other than tweedle dee vs tweedle dum, we have a one party system with two PR campaigns etc. In a lot of ways the primaries matter enormously more than the general elections, and of course some primaries are more important than others, etc.Jun 16 17:16
r_schestowitzI am just barely old enough to remember ancient mechanical voting machines from when my parents voted. Crazy things. Basically mechanical counters with hidden counts and lever interlocking systems, pull like ten little levers some interacting with each other then pull the big lever and hope for the best. The optical systems are much simpler and more reliable.Jun 16 17:16

r_schestowitzAs far as the dead people and non-voters showing up, you need to explain why there have been fewer than 20 cases of in-person voter fraud prosecuted in the last decade. If, for example, you're contending that there is a massively corrupt Democratic Party machine in Chicago, then why is it that Republican governor Bruce Rauner hasn't gone after it aggressively?Jun 16 17:16

r_schestowitz"I looked into this quite a bit as my home state was trying to pass one of those voter ID measures a few years back. Nobody researching this issue has ever found even one single documented instance of this kind of voter fraud. People don't submit fraudulent votes in person, except by accident (ie, signing the wrong line in the poll book.) The risk is too high, and the reward of a single vote is far too low. "Jun 16 17:17
r_schestowitz"There are other ways to hack an election, my government has been implementing them in the name of small government and stopping the non-existent voter fraud. Phone up people who are likely to vote for the opposition, tell them that their polling station has moved. Since they got caught last time, downsize the non-partisan election oversight and also ban them from even mentioning any investigations. Put polling stations in the right spotsJun 16 17:18
r_schestowitzso it is easier for your supporters to vote and harder for the oppositions supporters to vote (in the name of saving money). I usually vote in the advance polls as being self-employed it is hard to find time to vote on election day. Last federal election the advance polling station was 30 miles away in the wrong direction, for the provincial election it was on the way to town and so easy to use. And last, go on about imaginary voter fraudJun 16 17:18

r_schestowitzIn my home state in 2004, I took strong notice of the fact that it took me approximately 20 minutes to vote in the mostly white genteel suburb, while a coworker of mine from a not-at-all-genteel urban precinct spent 2.5 hours waiting in line. And apparently it got worse in the not-at-all-genteel district as time went on. By complete coincidence, the secretary of state who controlled little details like how many voting machines were in whichJun 16 17:20
r_schestowitzprecincts just happened to be the state campaign manager for the Republican candidate for president. And the not-at-all-genteel urban precinct was chock full of die-hard Democrats.Jun 16 17:20
r_schestowitzAnother technique seen more recently: The secretary of state has the tie-breaking vote on all of the county-wide elections councils (which are evenly split between Democrats and Republicans) that determine when early voting is open. Ours was voting for extended hours in areas which tended to support his party, and really short hours in areas which tended to oppose his party, until a federal court ruled he couldn't do that.Jun 16 17:20

r_schestowitzIndeed. Whether a voting computer runs free software or proprietary software does not matter for the voters, because voters are not running the software on their own computer.Jun 16 17:21
r_schestowitzIf the software is free, then others can make use of the four freedoms to change and modify that software to run on their own computers, and share the software with their friends. But none of that makes any difference at the election. The issues are entirely different.Jun 16 17:21

r_schestowitzReally, though, electronic voting makes formal what most American voters have suspected for a long time, that voting for change is a scam, and that voting only exists to fabricate the illusion of consent. With electronic voting, there remains no way for citizens to challenge the assumption of the legitimacy of the vote. There's no way to verify the ballot trail, there are no recounts.Jun 16 17:21
r_schestowitzThere's also the second dimension, that of the Citizens United decision, which redoubles the illegitimacy of voting in America. r_schestowitzNo, it doesn't. The NSA has unilaterally blown the 4th Amendment away (as written, it's supposed to be hard to changeJun 16 17:30

r_schestowitzNow, not voting does not mean doing nothing. Doing nothing is bad, and we can all agree with that as a more general statement. But voting is a complete waste of time, money, and effort when the system is this broken. Doing something that is not voting to change the status quo is vital. r_schestowitzThat said, you are wrong about your vote. Actually getting out and voting can be a revolutionary act. If the 40% to 45% of Americans like yourself who decide not to vote actually exercised that right, you would have your revolution.Jun 16 17:31
r_schestowitzAll it requires of you is a little of your time. You don't even have to sacrifice anything, and the system is already in place to effect the change you're looking for.Jun 16 17:31
r_schestowitzNo violence, risk to life and freedom, or even extraordinary effort, required. Just excercise your rights! Imagine how different the political landscape in the USA would be if people got as excited about their right to vote as they do about their right to bear arms!Jun 16 17:31
r_schestowitzI would like to introduce the mechanism of your revolution to you. It is called "Vote Splitting" [wikipedia.org]. You may not have heard of it before, but it's a common thing in countries with more than Two political parties.Jun 16 17:31
r_schestowitzLets do some math. With a 100% voterJun 16 17:31
r_schestowitzturnout, Candidate C could get 45% of the vote, and win easily!Jun 16 17:31
r_schestowitzNow, obviously a 100% voter turnout is unrealistic, and the other parties would probably benefit some too. The point is that it is possible. As part of the established political process, the roadmap is even there for how it works, and a smooth transition of power would be probable. (Either that, or the people who really run the show would be forced into the open... probably precipitating the armed revolution you seem to expect.)Jun 16 17:31
r_schestowitzAll it requires is an abolition of apathy, and overthrowing the defeatist attitude of the disenfranchised like yourself.Jun 16 17:31
r_schestowitzEffecting real policy change doesn't even require voter turnout that extreme. As I said in my other post, when third-party or independent candidates start to get popular, the mainstream candidates shift their policies to attract those votes.Jun 16 17:31
r_schestowitzSeriously, get out and vote. Vote for a third-party, and encourage everyone else to do the same. Voter apathy is one of the root causes of the mess you're in, and your participation can help fix it.Jun 16 17:31
r_schestowitzIf you and the other ~45% of the population can't take a couple of hours every couple years to engage with your political process now, your "American Republic 2.0" will probably end up as much a "Republic" (and just as "Democratic") as the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" [wikipedia.org]Jun 16 17:31

r_schestowitz    Apparently democracy can actually work! Granted, things are a little more sane here in Canada, with several political parties to choose from, not just two like our choice-challenged neighbours to the south seem to have.Jun 16 17:32
r_schestowitzWe often have over a dozen choices on the ballot down here. You've got the green party, the libertarians, the socialists, the justice party...lots of choices. But nobody will vote for them because they "can't win" because nobody votes for them. Instead we swallow the media lie that the Republicrats are the only party that exists and that a vote for Lucifer is better than a vote for Satan.Jun 16 17:32

r_schestowitzI can continue for awhile, without even hitting any of the crazy conspiracy sites. There are sites out there, presenting their versions of the truth. I don't believe that ANY site has "THE TRUTH" - there is no messiah to deliver us, there is no charismatic leader, there is no organization with all the secrets. But, there are plenty of people who offer truth, who offer parts of the truth.Jun 16 17:33

r_schestowitzIf I may bring my 'pet peeve', I wish David Sirota had instead gotten the article title to be 'USA hates its whistle-blowers'. Because America is a continent, a land area, while United States of America is a formal organization that was constituted in the 1700s, and that's in principle not very different from The Coca-Cola Company. I've even seen that USA refers to its president as its CEO.Jun 20 17:45
