The EPO is meant to be about Europe, but a lot of the biggest applicants are in fact American and Monopoly_Tony is bragging about it to American patent lobbyists. The above_talk, which is annotated verbally (Fair Use) shows that Monopoly Tony cannot stick to concision (a form of rudeness) when speaking to American patent lobbyists (who notoriously push for software patents). He moves his hands all over the place while speaking of “harmonisation” and spreading a bunch of lies, even gloating about changing the law to suit his agenda! “Is this the best Europe has to offer?”What’s quite illuminating here isn’t the poor communication skills (Benoît_Battistelli was even worse) but advocacy of software_patents — using all the typical buzzwords — culminating in evangelising “legal hacks” to circumvent laws and constitutions. Maybe the talk was so poor because it had been made for this audience, but still… Is this the best Europe has to offer? Jet-lagged, drunk, or both? █ Encoding notes/errata: At risk of distraction, the video is a tad jumpy at times. That’s just because the hardware is very weak and needs to assemble 3 video streams in tandem, in real time. It is a longstanding issue. Over time we might find a solution to this. The numbers shown on the right aren’t important; those are Gemini statistics since midnight. The subject was discussed in IRC today (albeit we’ve lost part of that discussion), but the short story is, LWN has only_just_joined_Mastodon (which I quit two years ago). They’re about 5 years late and they won’t get thousands of followers there (it’s way past the peak by now, suffering a demise like_all_the other_social_control_media). Many instances shut down, there’s a free speech deficit (it seems to be getting only worse over time), and there are technical overheads, never mind the waste of time associated with all sorts of “peripheral” activities. “But this isn’t a free account.”“For readers who want to follow our article stream on Mastodon,” LWN wrote a few hours ago, “LWN now (finally) has a presence in the Fosstodon community; you can find us at @LWN@fosstodon.org.” But this isn’t a free account. There’s a hidden cost and time will show the true cost of such an account, as I explain in the video above. Myself and associates have come to the conclusion that social control media is, at best, a waste of time and a distraction. It can be a lot worse than that. It doesn’t matter what nature (or topic/s of focus) a social control media site/instance may have, it’s just not designed for productive communication and constructive engagement. That’s why so many instances shut down eventually. LWN has got itself yet another site to maintain/babysit now; the net gain would be so minimal that it’s probably not even worth it. █ ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 349 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at http://techrights.org/2022/05/20/windows-in-turkey/#comments Gemini version at gemini://gemini.techrights.org/2022/05/20/windows-in-turkey/ ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ 05.20.22⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ Gemini_version_available_♊︎ ✐ In_Turkey,_Windows_Market_Share_is_Down_to_Almost_Nothing,_‘Linux’_is_About Two_Thirds_of_the_Connected_Devices⠀✐ Posted in GNU/Linux, Microsoft, Windows at 9:22 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇Turkey Market Share⦈ Schools in Turkey have been moving to GNU/Linux and many people use Android, powered by Linux Summary: Watch this_graph of Windows going down from around 99.5% to just 11.55% this month ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣚⣂⣀⣸⢉⣉⣉⣉⣉⣉⠉⠉⠉⠉⠉⠭⠭⠭⠭⢭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣶⣷⣶⣶⣶⣤⣈⡉⠻⠿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⣄⣄⣉⠛⠻⠻⢿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣶⣶⡌⢿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⠛⠛⢻⠸⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠀⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⣿⣿ ⣿⣶⣶⣾⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⣌⠙⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣇⢁⠘⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡆⢿⢿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⢿⣿⠟⠻⢿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡏⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⣄⡀⢿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠏⠈⠃⡄⠈⢰⣆⠸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠁⣿⣿ ⣏⣀⣀⣸⢨⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⠍⠩⠭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣥⡀⢩⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⣭⡭⠈⢀⣭⣭⣭⣡⣭⣭⡀⠉⠉⠉⠭⠉⠁⣨⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠋⠁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠈⠻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⡀⢻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠿⠟⢻⣿⣿⣿⡟⢻⣿⡿⠁⣼⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣾⣷⣶⣶⣴⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠁⠀⠀⣀⣄⡀⠀⠀⠀⣸⡿⠿⠟⠻⠿⠿⠗⠀⠻⠿⠿⠿⡿⠿⠋⠁⠠⠒⢾⠄⢄⠙⠋⠁⠈⡏⠁⣸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣇⠀⠀⠀⢿⣿⠇⠀⠀⠀⣽⣗⠀⣁⠘⡉⡀⣇⢓⡀⢀⡀⠃⠀⠀⢀⢰⢀⡀⢣⡀⢐⢠⣄⣼⡆⠀⣾⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⡿⠻⠟⢿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣄⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⢀⣰⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡏⠀⢰⣶⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣷⣶⣶⣾⢰⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣦⣤⣤⣤⣴⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⠂⣠⣠⣤⣶⣤⡀⢲⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⠒⠀⠲⡶⠤⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠁⣼⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣦⣀⠙⠻⢿⠋⡉⢠⣤⡀⢀⠀⠟⠹⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠟⢁⣼⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣦⣄⣰⣿⣿⣿⣧⣼⣇⢀⠀⢻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⢿⡟⠻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡟⢀⣀⣾⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣇⠘⠛⣿⠿⡿⠙⣿⣿⠁⣀⣀⣠⣆⠈⡀⢻⣿⣿ ⣏⣉⣉⣹⢘⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⡛⠛⠀⣚⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⣒⡀⠁⡀⠁⢀⠘⠃⢐⣛⣛⣛⣛⣛⡃⠘⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠛⢁⣴⣾⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣾⣷⡶⢾⣦⣴⣾⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠀⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠁⣴⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠛⢉⣉⣉⣀⣀⣠⣤⣄⣁⣄⠙⠋⠉⠈⠉⠉⣠⣤⣄⣉⣠⣈⣁⣄⣈⣉⠙⠛⠋⣀⣤⣄⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⢸⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠿⠿⠛⠛⢁⡼⠿⠟⠛⠋⡉⠋⣉⣠⣤⣦⣴⣶⣶⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡇⠀⠛⢾⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣶⣾⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⡿⠿⢿⠸⠿⠿⠿⠿⠿⠟⠻⠛⠿⠟⠛⠟⠛⠻⠛⠛⠛⠛⠉⠁⠀⠀⠈⠉⠁⠀⠒⠒⠛⠛⠟⠛⠛⠛⠛⠛⠉⠉⠛⠉⠀⠙⠿⠿⠿⠻⠛⠛⠛⠉⠙⠁⠐⠃⠈⠉⠙⠋⠙⠉⠉⠛⠛⠛⠛⠋⠉⠉⠉⠙⠙⣿⣿ ⣿⣷⣦⣴⣤⣤⣤⣤⡤⠀⢠⣤⣤⣤⠄⢠⣤⣦⣤⡄⡀⣴⣤⣤⣤⠀⢰⣶⣶⣶⢖⠒⣶⣶⣶⡶⠒⣶⣶⣶⣶⠒⢲⣶⣶⣶⡖⠲⣶⣶⣶⡶⠒⢲⣶⣶⣶⠖⢲⣶⣶⣶⡖⠒⣶⣶⣶⣶⠒⢶⣶⣶⣶⠖⠲⣶⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠁⣰⣿⣿⣿⠋⢀⣾⣿⣿⡟⠁⣲⣿⣿⡿⡉⢰⣿⣿⣿⠏⢀⣾⣿⣿⡟⠁⣰⣿⣿⣿⠋⢐⣿⣿⣿⢏⠁⣾⣿⣿⡿⠁⣰⣿⣿⣿⠋⢀⣾⣿⣿⡟⠉⣰⣿⣿⡿⡁⢠⣿⣿⣿⠏⢀⣼⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⠉⣵⣿⣿⣿⠏⢩⣾⣿⣿⠟⠉⣼⣿⣿⡿⠋⣱⣿⣿⣿⠏⢩⣾⣿⣿⡿⠉⣴⣿⣿⡿⠋⢡⣿⣿⣿⠟⢉⣾⣿⣿⡿⠉⣵⣿⣿⡿⠏⢡⣾⣿⣿⠟⠉⣼⣿⣿⡿⠋⣱⣿⣿⣿⠏⢩⣾⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⣦⣿⣿⣿⣿⣦⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⣼⣿⣿⣿⣿⣦⣿⣿⣿⣿⣶⣼⣿⣿⣿⣷⣼⣿⣿⣿⣿⣦⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⣼⣿⣿⣿⣷⣦⣿⣿⣿⣿⣦⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⣼⣿⣿⣿⣿⣦⣿⣿⣿⣿⣶⣼⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣟⠭⢹⡉⠋⠛⠋⠛⠛⠛⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⢽⢝⠏⠛⠛⢙⠛⠙⢹⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡫⢝⡏⠩⠉⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡏⠍⣛⠍⠉⠏⢽⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⡿⣛⢻⢻⠛⠿⠛⠟⠛⠛⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⢛⠻⡟⠛⠛⠛⢻⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⠿⠿⡟⡛⠛⠟⠟⢟⠛⠛⠛⠻⠛⢿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣶⣾⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣶⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣶⣾⣷⣶⣶⣶⣾⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣷⣶⣶⣶⣾⣧⣶⣶⣶⣶⣦⣾⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿ ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 410 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐃𝐀𝐈𝐋𝐘 𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐊𝐒 ═════════════════════════════════════════════╕ ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ 05.20.22⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ Gemini_version_available_♊︎ ✐ Links_20/05/2022:_Fedora_BIOS_Boot_SIG⠀✐ Posted in News_Roundup at 8:59 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇GNOME bluefish⦈ § Contents⠀➾ * GNU/Linux o Audiocasts/Shows o Instructionals/Technical o Games * Distributions_and_Operating_Systems o BSD o Fedora_Family_/_IBM o Canonical/Ubuntu_Family o Open_Hardware/Modding o Mobile_Systems/Mobile_Applications * Free,_Libre,_and_Open_Source_Software o Web_Browsers # Mozilla o SaaS/Back_End/Databases o Programming/Development # Shell/Bash/Zsh/Ksh * Leftovers o Science o Hardware o Health/Nutrition/Agriculture o Security # Privacy/Surveillance o Defence/Aggression o Environment # Energy o Finance o AstroTurf/Lobbying/Politics o Censorship/Free_Speech o Freedom_of_Information_/_Freedom_of_the_Press o Civil_Rights/Policing o Internet_Policy/Net_Neutrality o Monopolies # Copyrights * § GNU/Linux⠀➾ o § Audiocasts/Shows⠀➾ # ⚓ Video ☛ You_can_now_HEAR_how_bad_Windows_sucks_on_the_Steam Deck._(Plus_other_Steam_Deck_News)_–_Invidious⠀⇛ Without the Deck UI, the Steam Deck is just a boring handheld PC. The first way is for all of the various consoles of Linux and the programs that use them to be explicitly pointed to a serial port, and for them to be prepared to work through the limited features of a serial port console instead of the video console. This means that the server BIOS, the bootloader, the Linux kernel, the init system, the OS installer, the OS recovery mode, and so on and so forth all have to support configuring a serial connection and being used over serial. # ⚓ Nathan Smith ☛ Using_PGP_Keys_for_SSH_on_Fedora⠀⇛ I learned recently that PGP keys can be used for SSH authentication. This is quite convenient because if you’re already managing a PGP key to sign git commits (hint: you should probably be doing this), then you’ll have one less key to manage. As a bonus, if you’ve added your PGP public key to Github you can immediately use a subkey with authentication privileges to pull and push to your repositories over SSH. # ⚓ Red Hat Official ☛ How_I_got_started_with_RHEL_|_Enable Sysadmin⠀⇛ Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) celebrated its 20th anniversary days before RHEL 9 was released. If you’re the only person using a repository, the benefits are modest, but once you start working with many other contributors, branching is essential. Git’s branching mechanism allows multiple people to work on a project, and even on the same file, at the same time. Users can introduce different features, independent of one another, and then merge the changes back to a main branch later. A branch created specifically for one purpose, such as adding a new feature or fixing a known bug, is sometimes called a topic branch. Once you start working with branches, it’s helpful to know how to manage them. Here are the most common tasks developers do with Git branches in the real world. # ⚓ How_to_Kill_a_Process_from_the_Linux_|_Mark_Ai_Code⠀⇛ In Linux, a process is an instance of a running service, application, or script. When you execute a command, application, or program, a process is established for it. Each process has a unique process id connected with a particular user and group. If any processes use excessive amounts of resources or become unresponsive, it may be necessary to terminate them. In this scenario, the kill command may be used to terminate the process without restarting the server. In this article, we will demonstrate how to terminate Linux processes. # ⚓ Citizix ☛ How_to_Install_and_Configure_KVM_in_ArchLinux/ Manjaro⠀⇛ Kernel-based Virtual Machine(KVM) is a virtualization module in the Linux kernel that allows the kernel to function as a hypervisor. It is the leading open source virtualisation technology for Linux. It installs natively on all Linux distributions and turns underlying physical servers into hypervisors so that they can host multiple, isolated virtual machines (VMs). KVM comes with no licenses, type-1 hypervisor capabilities and a variety of performance extensions which makes it an ideal candidate for virtualisation and cloud infrastructure implementation. # ⚓ Linux Handbook ☛ How_to_Go_to_a_Specific_Line_in_Vim⠀⇛ Vim is a powerful editor that, at worst, will only feel fast. Here we’re covering turn-based strategy games that require intelligence, and the ability to come up with an innovative plan that will leave the competition mesmerized. As the title indicates, we are covering a genre where players take turns when playing, strategically seeking to outsmart the enemy. Many of the biggest computer games concentrate on explosion-filled genres. But there is a place for high quality turn-based strategy games. It’s a neglected genre in the mainstream, yet contains many marvelous titles. The genre might conjure thoughts of board games with dice and individualized pieces. But, now, they can use the latest technology to make more realistic and immersive experiences. There are a vast range of open source games in this field. Turn-based strategy games lend themselves remarkably to open source development. This genre doesn’t need armies of artwork or computer modelling. Games of this type also have fairly modest system requirements, and gives gamers time to get to grips with the controls even if it can take many hours to learn all of the intricacies. You can sit back, strategize, and take a breath, considering all options before making a move. So if you’re looking for a change of pace, check out the following games. * § Distributions and Operating Systems⠀➾ o § BSD⠀➾ # ⚓ Klara ☛ Evaluating_FreeBSD_CURRENT_for_Production_Use⠀⇛ CURRENT doesn’t get official security or errata notices, so users must follow developments via the commit logs and mailing list, creating obvious downsides to running it in production. This doesn’t stop large organizations such as Netflix using systems based on CURRENT in production—but doing so responsibly means having an experienced team capable of catching and mitigating issues in CURRENT before they reach the production stack. Why might you want to run CURRENT? If you have a large modified code base, or are building a product based on FreeBSD, CURRENT gives you a look into the future of FreeBSD. Running CURRENT will help you understand changes that are happening in the FreeBSD Operating System and it gives you an opportunity to see how your stack performs with new features. o § Fedora Family / IBM⠀➾ # ⚓ Add,_Delete_And_Grant_Sudo_Privileges_To_Users_In_Fedora 36⠀⇛ Using sudo program, we can elevate the ability of a normal user to run administrative tasks, without giving away the root user’s password in Linux operating systems. The first section teaches you how to create a new user. In the second section, you’ll learn how to give sudo access to the existing user. And in the last section, you will know how to remove sudo access from a user. I’ve also provided example commands in each section, so you can understand it better. First, we will start with giving sudo access to a new user. # ⚓ Fedora Project ☛ Fedora_Community_Blog:_CPE_Weekly_Update_– Week_20_2022⠀⇛ Purpose of this team is to take care of day to day business regarding CentOS and Fedora Infrastructure and Fedora release engineering work. # ⚓ Announcing_the_Fedora_BIOS_boot_SIG⠀⇛ # ⚓ Fedora Project ☛ BIOS_Boot_SIG⠀⇛ The goal of this SIG is to help the folks working on Fedora’s bootloader stack to keep Fedora booting on systems which require Legacy BIOS to boot. Mozilla last year said it intended to support MV3 in Firefox extensions, though with some differences. Its implementation of the WebExtensions API in Firefox has now incorporated enough of MV3 plumbing that developers can set the appropriate browser flags and experiment with MV3 extensions in Firefox v101, now in beta and due for release at the end of May. Google Chrome is expected to stop supporting extensions created under the old MV2 specification in about a year, June 2023. And given Chrome’s share of the browser market – about 64 per cent currently – extension developers will want to have updated their code by then and to have accounted for how MV3 works – or doesn’t – in different browsers. o § SaaS/Back End/Databases⠀➾ # ⚓ DJ Adams ☛ JSON_object_values_into_CSV_with_jq⠀⇛ I wanted to grab a CSV version of a JSON representation of an entityset in the Northwind OData service. Here is a short list of the choices available: [...] # ⚓ Erlang ☛ Erlang/OTP_25.0_Release⠀⇛ Erlang/OTP 25 is a new major release with new features, improvements as well as a few incompatibilities. # ⚓ James G ☛ Learning_PHP:_The_Beginning⠀⇛ I wrote my first programs in PHP today (with a lot of help from the [Internet]). It’s always exciting to learn something new. I am getting excited because I like knowing how my programming logic — how instructions combine to do something — applies to different languages. It’s cool seeing what features a language does have, doesn’t have, and implements differently from those that I already know. For instance, I learned today that PHP doesn’t have an explicit “dictionary” data structure. Instead, you can create a dictionary- like object using an array. (Whereas in Python array and dictionary are explicit and different.) # ⚓ Jim Nielsen ☛ Quick_and_Dirty_Text_Diffing⠀⇛ What I really want, though, is a solution that lets me diff two pieces of text that aren’t yet files. Copy/paste some text into pane 1, copy/paste some text into pane 2, and hit the big red “DIFF” button. # ⚓ OpenSource.com ☛ A_programmer’s_guide_to_GNU_C_Compiler_| Opensource.com⠀⇛ C is a well-known programming language, popular with experienced and new programmers alike. Source code written in C uses standard English terms, so it’s considered human-readable. However, computers only understand binary code. To convert code into machine language, you use a tool called a compiler. A very common compiler is GCC (GNU C Compiler). The compilation process involves several intermediate steps and adjacent tools. # § Shell/Bash/Zsh/Ksh⠀➾ # ⚓ Earthly ☛ Using_Bash_to_Read_Files⠀⇛ For programmers, Bash enables you to efficiently search for particular keywords or phrases by reading each line separately. Bash can also be used for reading files for a variety of reasons, like shell scripting, searching, text processing, building processes, logging data, and automating administrative tasks. When you’re done with this article, you’ll be able to use Bash to read files line by line, use custom delimiters, assign variables, and more. * § Leftovers⠀➾ o ⚓ Common Dreams ☛ Opinion_|_The_Heart_Is_Mightier_Than_the_Sword⠀⇛ They’re coming for me! o ⚓ Barry Hess ☛ Why_I_Went_HTML_Only⠀⇛ So I abandoned that idea for something else; something I hadn’t done in fifteen years or so. I started using a third-party software. Micro.blog is an application I had tried in the past, but it hadn’t quite clicked. This time I vowed to really dig in, and it turns out I do really like the service. There are plenty of templates, which you can customize yourself (I did not do that because it seemed too complex) and you can also insert your own CSS (which I did do to a complex degree). It’s sometimes a bit hard to follow how you are to do things, but overall I quite like it. o § Science⠀➾ # ⚓ Dhole Moments ☛ Guidance_for_Choosing_an_Elliptic_Curve Signature_Algorithm_in_2022⠀⇛ Earlier this year, Cendyne published A Deep Dive into Ed25519 Signatures, which covered some of the different types of digital signature algorithms, but mostly delved into the Ed25519 algorithm. It’s capable of putting out 1000W in peak power, and can decode Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks as you’d expect. It’s intended to be used as the heart of a home cinema system and used with a central command console. However, [zarpli] figured out the device’s serial secrets and can now run the device in a standalone manner. # ⚓ Hackaday ☛ PCB_Linear_Motors_For_Model_Trains⠀⇛ Modeling a railroad is hard. Railroads are large, linear pieces of civil engineering. So many modelers are drawn to the smallest scale they can use. Recently a new scale, named T, at 1:450 has been pushing this barrier. But fitting a reliable mechanical drive mechanism and MCU board in a package this size is a challenge. In practice, even more of a problem is getting reliable electrical contact through a metal wheel on metal track (about the worst possible design for a contact). # ⚓ Hackaday ☛ Scott’s_CPU_From_The_Bottom_Up⠀⇛ It isn’t for everyone, but if you work much with computers at a low level, you’ll probably sooner or later entertain the idea of creating your own CPU. There was a time when that was a giant undertaking, but with today’s tools and FPGAs it is… well, not easy, but certainly easier. If you have the urge to try your own, you might have a look at [Simply Explained’s] video series called “Building Scott’s CPU.” # ⚓ the_new_and_upgraded_framework_laptop⠀⇛ The mainboard I’m definitely excited about, especially the potential for power savings. However, for ~$450 which is half the price of the laptop, I have a much harder time justifying that purchase. I was hoping for an AMD or and ARM mainboard because I would be very interested in either of those. People online have been speculating that the reliance on thunderbolt 4 is preventing framework from selling an AMD mainboard, even thought it’s just an implementation of USB4 and the new AMD CPUs support USB4. o § Health/Nutrition/Agriculture⠀➾ # ⚓ The Nation ☛ “Case_Numbers_Don’t_Matter”—and_Other_Fatal Covid_Fallacies⠀⇛ Back at the start of February 2022, at what in retrospect was the peak of the Omicron surge, with over 2,500 deaths per day in the United States from the infection, Ashish Jha, then the dean of the Brown University School of Public Health and now the White House Covid czar, told The New York Times’ David Leonhardt, “I don’t actually care about infections. I care about hospitalizations and deaths and long-term complications.” # ⚓ Zach Flower ☛ Balancing_Parenthood_and_Startup_Life⠀⇛ There is nothing quite so humbling as being completely responsible for the wellbeing of another person. António Guterres, the un secretary general, warned on May 18th that the coming months threaten “the spectre of a global food shortage” that could last for years. The high cost of staple foods has already raised the number of people who cannot be sure of getting enough to eat by 440m, to 1.6bn. Nearly 250m are on the brink of famine. If, as is likely, the war drags on and supplies from Russia and Ukraine are limited, hundreds of millions more people could fall into poverty. Political unrest will spread, children will be stunted and people will starve. # ⚓ New Scientist ☛ Pollution_killed_9_million_people_worldwide in_2019_alone⠀⇛ Pollution killed 9 million people globally in 2019, accounting for one in six deaths, an analysis suggests. Rich Fuller at the Global Alliance on Health and Pollution in Switzerland and his colleagues first assessed the impact of pollution on premature deaths in 2015, similarly finding it caused 9 million fatalities. To uncover how pollution-related deaths may have changed, the team repeated the analysis for 2019, using data from the ongoing Global Burden of Diseases Study. # ⚓ New Republic ☛ How_Bill_Gates_Impeded_Global_Access_to Covid_Vaccines⠀⇛ Gates is certain he knows better. But his failure to anticipate a crisis of supply, and his refusal to engage those who predicted it, have complicated the carefully maintained image of an all-knowing, saintly mega-philanthropist. COVAX presents a high- stakes demonstration of Gates’s deepest ideological commitments, not just to intellectual [sic] property [sic] rights [sic] but also to the conflation of these rights with an imaginary free market in pharmaceuticals—an industry dominated by companies whose power derives from politically constructed and politically imposed monopolies. Gates has been tacitly and explicitly defending the legitimacy of knowledge monopolies since his first Gerald Ford–era missives against open-source software hobbyists. He was on the side of these monopolies during the miserable depths of the 1990s African AIDS crisis. He’s still there today, defending the status quo and running effective interference for those profiting by the billions from their control of Covid-19 vaccines. # ⚓ TruthOut ☛ End_of_Free_School_Meals_Will_Be_Catastrophic for_Kids⠀⇛ # ⚓ Common Dreams ☛ Opinion_|_Why_Seniors_Like_Me_Are_Fighting Against_Medicare_Direct_Contracting_and_ACO_REACH⠀⇛ When I became eligible for Medicare I had to make the choice between Traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage (MA), the version of Medicare run by for-profit insurance companies. In 2019, the AI Now Institute called for a ban on the use of emotion AI in significant decisions such as hiring and when judging student performance. In 2021, the Brookings Institution called for it to be banned for use by law enforcement. # ⚓ The Conversation ☛ Facebook_Dating_was_set_to_take over_the_market_–_instead_it_was_dead_in_the_water⠀⇛ But four years later, it hasn’t taken over the market – most people have simply forgotten about it. Numerous reports claim the dating app practically doesn’t function. Facebook’s own data suggest not many people use the service – about 300,000 in New York, compare with the claimed 3 million Bumble users in New York. As an online dating technology researcher, I had an eye on Facebook Dating since its announcement. But as I never heard anything about its market success, it took me a while to look into it. Now, I think I have a good idea why the app failed. # ⚓ The Verge ☛ F-150_Lightning_owners_can’t_use_their phones_as_keys_until_‘late_summer’⠀⇛ Anyone lucky enough to get an F-150 Lightning in the next few months will find that one of the features they may have opted for is missing: the ability to unlock and control the electric truck using a phone. According to screenshots of Special Service Message notices and in-app messages posted to the Lightning Owners’ Forum, Ford will be rolling out support for its Phone as a Key system in “late summer 2022” via a software update instead of shipping it with the truck at launch. Ford’s Phone as a Key system lets you use its FordPass app to unlock and start your vehicle, as well as control various things like the windows, lights, and front trunk. What makes the delay slightly puzzling is that this isn’t new tech from Ford — the company introduced it on a few 2020 Lincoln models, and it’s also available in its other battery EV, the Mustang Mach-E. o § Defence/Aggression⠀➾ # ⚓ NBC ☛ Michigan_election_chief:_Trump_suggested_I_be arrested_for_treason_and_executed⠀⇛ Jocelyn Benson, Michigan’s top election official, faced an onslaught of threats after the 2020 presidential election for refusing to overturn results that showed Joe Biden had won the state. In those hectic weeks, she says she also received an especially disturbing piece of information: President Donald Trump suggested in a White House meeting that she should be arrested for treason and executed. Benson, a Democrat, revealed the alleged remark for the first time in an interview with NBC News. I’m angry and frustrated about it as well. But, the problem with anger and frustration is that it often leads people to lash out in irrational ways, and to “do something” even if that “something” is counterproductive and destructive. In this case, we’ve already seen politicians and the media trying to drive the conversation away from larger issues around racism, mental health, law enforcement, social safety nets and more… and look for something to blame. # ⚓ Meduza ☛ ‘It_was_the_only_option’_Russia_casts_doubt_on prisoner_exchange_for_soldiers_from_Ukraine’s_Azov_regiment⠀⇛ After weeks of defending the Azovstal steel plant as Ukraine’s last stronghold in Mariupol, soldiers from the Azov Battalion began leaving the site on May 16. The troops were evacuated into Russian- controlled territory as part of what Kyiv describes as an ongoing “rescue operation.” However, officials in Russia and the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) have cast doubt on the possibility of swapping these soldiers in a prisoner exchange, calling instead for Azov troops to face a “tribunal” and even capital punishment. # ⚓ Democracy Now ☛ Nina_Khrushcheva:_Talks_to_End_War_in Ukraine_Are_Collapsing_as_U.S._Seeks_Regime_Change_in Moscow⠀⇛ As the United Nations warns about the devastating global impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, talks to negotiate a peace settlement appear to have collapsed. Russian President Vladimir Putin appears determined to push forward despite a more resilient Ukrainian defense than expected, as both sides seem to be fixated on gaining military and territorial victories. Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to pour millions of dollars in weapons into Ukraine. “It does seem that the United States thinks that Ukraine should be supported in its war effort, not its negotiation effort, until the very end,” says Nina Khrushcheva, professor at The New School and the great-granddaughter of former Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. The gun store owner who sold the weapon says a background check showed a clean record. We look at how background checks alone are not enough to prevent gun violence, as both mass shootings and weapons sales have skyrocketed in recent years without more legislation at the federal level. Multiple bills proposing harsher gun restrictions have been blocked by filibusters in Congress. “Our demand is that we renew an assault weapons ban at the federal level and also that we restrict the production of high-capacity magazines or large- capacity magazines,” says Kris Brown, president of Brady, one of the oldest gun violence prevention organizations in the U.S. # ⚓ Techdirt ☛ Lawsuit_Attempts_To_Hold_TikTok_Responsible_For Death_Of_10-Year-Old_Girl_Who_Engaged_In_A_‘Blackout Challenge’⠀⇛ When a tragedy happens, lawsuits tend to follow. Shishimarin is the first Russian soldier to face formal charges for war crimes in Ukraine. He is accused of murdering a 62-year-old man in the Sumy region named Oleksandr Shelipov. According to prosecutors, on February 28, Shishimarin and four other Russian servicemen ended up in the village of Chupakhivka after their convoy was attacked and dispersed. The soldiers then fired on and commandeered a private vehicle. While driving away, they saw a civilian with a bicycle who was speaking on a cell phone. On orders from his commanding officer, Shishimarin shot the man using his assault rifle. Not long thereafter, Ukrainian troops captured the sergeant and later charged him with violating the laws and customs of warfare, as well as committing a premeditated murder. However, we write to express our concerns about new sanctions that may interfere with the Russian people’s access to the internet, which will obstruct attempts to organize in opposition to the war, report openly and honestly on events in Russia, and access information about what is happening in Ukraine and abroad. New measures implemented by the U.K. may impact business between companies operating in the U.K. and Russian telecommunications firms like TransTelekom, and carry the unintended consequence of disrupting internet access in Russia. There is also increasing pressure, internally and externally, on information and communications technology vendors like internet, telecommunications, and cloud service providers to voluntarily restrict or block access by users in Russia. Already, for example, tech companies are withdrawing paid applications and services, banning Russia entirely, and limiting services to civil society under vague justifications. It is not a stand-alone virtualization provider. It relies on other virtualization providers such as Virtualbox, Libvirt/KVM, Docker, VMWare to create and run virtual machines. By default, Vagrant uses Oracle VirtualBox as provider. If more than one providers are installed (E.g. Virtualbox and Libvirt) in your system, it will always start a VM with Virtualbox unless you explicitly provide a specific provider. One of the great features of Vagrant is that users are never tied to a specific virtualization platform. The users can create workflows that work with multiple virtualization providers. By default, the object of a specified array is allocated in a map or hash map of the type ‘pair,’ with all of the ‘first’ elements having unique keys paired with their ‘second’ value objects. Rust does it’s magic in the compiler. The code you write is what actually runs, without an interpreter or garbage collection trying to be helpful. Rust hasn’t overdosed on Object Oriented patterns, but meshes nicely with the C-style structs already used in the kernel. Even the stack model is very similar to C. There’s one problem with Rust’s memory-safe guarantee — it’s impossible to write a kernel that is formally memory-safe. A kernel has to write to unallocated memory, do weird pointer math, and other seemingly bizarre things to actually make our computers work. This doesn’t work well with a language that tries to guarantee that memory manipulations are safe. How do you write kernel code with Rust, then? Rust has added the unsafe keyword, allowing use of direct memory access and other such techniques that don’t work with Rusts’s memory guarantees. Keep the potential problems together, and it makes auditing easier. There’s at least one other language that may come to mind as an incremental update to C that tries to do some of these things: C++. Surely this would have been even a better fit, right? Kernel devs have some strong feelings about that idea. To put it gently, none of the improvements in C++ are useful in the context of the kernel, and some of the other changes just get in the way. * § Leftovers⠀➾ o ⚓ Counter Punch ☛ Who’s_the_Father?⠀⇛ They suck the virgin light through straws poked into your child’s mind as if it were a school milk carton and when the slurpings done the child’s face shows up on the box, another desaparecido They tiptoe through the night’s broad shadows hysteriques and monotones whispering sweet nothings in your dreams as they suck and leave behind like a mosquito leaves malaria the molecule:Evil – Hate – Anger that poisons, becomes the lens through which the world is secretly seen, their argoty world of ‘warlocks and witches’ felt by Others who cross their path their secret men’s world of psycho-pathology John Wayne Gacy hydra-heads on a brain stem stick they look at you askance with abracadabra eyes on the loose, in some places more than others, with their chaos seeded, final solutions, and lies The Fall when you think about it has some problems for modern readers as an Origin story Adam’s Rib, for instance, raising the question: Who owns a woman’s body? Movistar came out slightly ahead in the new report after tying with Claro for the top position in the report’s last edition. Except for the user notification category, Movistar received full credit in all other evaluated parameters. Even though all four companies—Bitel, Claro, Entel, and Movistar—have improved their marks since the first edition in 2015, the disparities in the latest results are evident. In four out of eight evaluated categories, Bitel and Entel received no credit, highlighting their lack of transparency regarding government requests for getting access to user personal data. Only Movistar and Claro received scores  for publishing information about government requests for user data, disclosing guidelines they follow when responding to such requests, explicitly committing to require judicial orders before handing user data to authorities, and disclosing practices for notifying users about such government requests. The report also looked at companies’ privacy policies, digital security practices, and human rights policies. In those categories, all four companies earned at least partial scores. This report, the fourth evaluating Peru’s major telecom operators,  included a new category: whether telecom companies make available webpages, contracts, and/or privacy policies in native languages, like Quechua and Aymara. Visits by Western diplomats to India did not help to alter the Indian government’s actions. India, under the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been firmly in the U.S. camp, taking part in reviving the Quad and signing three foundational defense agreements with the United States. These moves suggest that India strongly agreed with the United States’ focus on the containment of China. Has India then shifted from this alignment with the United States based on its dealings with Russia? Is nonalignment back on the table? The answer to this question is far more complicated than it would appear on the surface. # ⚓ Counter Punch ☛ Ukraine:_the_Antiwar_Dilemma⠀⇛ Here, for instance, are just a few notes I took recently while listening to NPR: A woman calls one of its talk shows, feeling guilty about celebrating her daughter’s birthday in style when Ukrainians are suffering so horribly. In 2014, the Obama-Biden administration, especially Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria “Screw the EU” Nuland, helped overthrow Ukraine’s democratically elected government and installed an anti-Russian government feeding into Ukraine’s situation today.  Despite the Obama-Biden administration’s reckless desire to pour gasoline on the flames by directly arming Ukraine – an idea which was quickly rebuffed by European allies – cooler heads prevailed. # ⚓ Counter Punch ☛ The_British_Art_of_Black_Propaganda⠀⇛ In its efforts to try to win US support for its cause against Hitler in World War II, the train of British propaganda again operated with a concerted effect, demonising isolationists and denigrating supporters and members of the America First Committee.  The great hope there was that Britain would fight the Germans to the last American.  It led to one of the largest covert operations in UK history conducted under the auspices of an agency known as “British Security Coordination”.  During the course of its operations, BSC subject matter entered the American political bloodstream, aided by the injecting activities of Walter Winchell, Drew Pearson, a radio station (WRUL) and the Overseas News Agency (ONA). They are truly breathtaking, and it’s hard to take your eyes off them. Nevertheless, my attention often wandered to another of the reserve’s primates—the troop of long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis). These slender monkeys with variegated green fur and striking facial hair were bounding on all fours through the trees with their long, slim tails acting as a counterbalance. Macaques are seed dispersers, making them a keystone species in the environment; remove them from the forest and you risk a cascade of ecological consequences. I could reliably find them within a half-mile of the river’s edge, where they spent their days foraging, grooming, swimming and sleeping. They also routinely wandered into our camp, easily navigating the “edges” that we had opened in the forest. The adults were fiercely protective of the infants and juveniles. Each evening before dark, the troop gathered at a large sleeping tree by the edge of the river. When everyone was accounted for in this troop of 30 highly social and intelligent macaques, the members would huddle together for warmth, safety and companionship. The months I spent in Borneo collecting observational data on the macaques would eventually lead me into an academic and research career during which I focused on the ways infectious diseases move between human and macaque populations and the consequences that this has for primate conservation and public health. o § Finance⠀➾ # ⚓ Capital_One_tells_me_to_get_a_letter_from_the_Buick dealership_for_my_Batteries_Plus_dispute_and_then_says_it doesn’t_count.⠀⇛ Capital One told me to get a letter from the Buick dealership for my Batteries Plus Bulbs dispute and then says it doesn’t count. What most mainstream publications don’t do is link directly to the manifesto itself so that members of the public can easily access it, read it, and form our own opinions on its contents. The island—which hosts eight of New York City’s jails and the nearly 6,000 people caged in them—has become synonymous with ruinously brutal carceral practices and inhumane facilities. But by the summer of last year, the chaos and disorganization of the Covid-19 pandemic had degraded living conditions considerably for the island’s prisoners. A delegation of state elected officials, visiting the complex to document the crisis in September 2021, witnessed prisoners in desperate conditions: floors strewn with garbage and human waste, vermin infestations, sick prisoners abandoned without access to medical care, an attempted suicide. A mass sick-out policy—wherein thousands of guards simultaneously coordinated taking medical leave—had badly intensified the situation: New York City’s phenomenally well-resourced jails, where correction officers significantly outnumber prisoners, appeared to be badly understaffed. By year’s end, 16 people had died in the custody of the city’s Department of Correction (DOC), some from medical neglect, some from suicide, all while the city’s jail population crept up to pre-pandemic levels and vaccination rates among prisoners remained alarmingly low.1 # ⚓ The Nation ☛ Anti-War_Activists_Are_Facing_a_Moral Dilemma⠀⇛ I’ve been watching this country at war for many years now and, after 9/11, began spending time with American veterans who came to disdain and actively oppose the very conflicts they were sent to fight. The paths they followed to get there and the courage it took to turn their backs on all they had once embraced intrigued and impressed me, so I wrote a book about them. While doing so, I was often struck by a strange reality in that era of American war-making: In a land where there was no longer a draft, most Americans were paying remarkably little attention to our ongoing wars thousands of miles away. I find it even stranger today—and please note that this takes nothing away from the misery of the Ukrainian people or the ruthlessness of Vladimir Putin’s invasion—that the public seems vastly more engaged in a war its country is not officially fighting than in the ones we did fight so brutally and unsuccessfully over the past two decades. ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 5072 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐃𝐀𝐈𝐋𝐘 𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐊𝐒 ═════════════════════════════════════════════╕ ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ 05.20.22⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ Gemini_version_available_♊︎ ✐ Links_20/05/2022:_Thunderbird_Revenue_Rising⠀✐ Posted in News_Roundup at 7:00 pm by Dr. Roy Schestowitz 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴 🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽 ⦇GNOME bluefish⦈ § Contents⠀➾ * GNU/Linux o Desktop/Laptop o Applications o Instructionals/Technical o Desktop_Environments/WMs # K_Desktop_Environment/KDE_SC/Qt # GNOME_Desktop/GTK * Distributions_and_Operating_Systems o BSD o Open_Hardware/Modding o Mobile_Systems/Mobile_Applications * Free,_Libre,_and_Open_Source_Software o Web_Browsers # Mozilla o Programming/Development * Leftovers o Science o Hardware o Health/Nutrition/Agriculture o Security # Privacy/Surveillance o Defence/Aggression o Finance o AstroTurf/Lobbying/Politics o Censorship/Free_Speech o Internet_Policy/Net_Neutrality * § GNU/Linux⠀➾ o § Desktop/Laptop⠀➾ # ⚓ 9to5Google ☛ Chrome_OS_101:_Dark_boot_screen_added,_new Launcher_starts_appearing,_more [Ed: Still vastly worse than proper distros of GNU/Linux in terms of features]⠀⇛ o § Applications⠀➾ # ⚓ ByteXD ☛ 10_of_the_Best_Graphic_Design_Software_for_Linux_– ByteXD⠀⇛ The fact that Linux is open-source makes a best fit for many disciplines. I’m a gamer, mostly on computer, but I have a big rig running Windows because many games still don’t work well with Linux, but I also play video games on my Linux laptop. Unfortunately, my laptop only has an intel integrated graphic card, so many games won’t run well enough to be played, so I’m using an external GPU for some games. But it’s not ideal, the eGPU is big (think of it as a big shoes box), doesn’t have mouse/keyboard/usb connectors, so I’ve put it into another room with a screen at a height to play while standing up, controller in hands. This doesn’t solve everything, but I can play most games running on it and allowing a controller. But if I install a game on both the big rig and the laptop, I have to manually sync the saves (I’m buying most of the games on GOG which doesn’t have a Linux client to sync saves), it’s highly boring and error-prone. o § Desktop Environments/WMs⠀➾ # § K Desktop Environment/KDE SC/Qt⠀➾ # ⚓ Okteta_making_a_small_step_to_Qt6_|_Attracted_by virtual_constructs⠀⇛ Old, but stable, even more in when it comes to the feature set, and still getting its polishing now and then: your simple editor for the raw data of files, named Okteta. For some, fears have centered around monkeypox being the potential “next pandemic” after Covid-19. For others, the fear is that monkeypox will be used as the latest excuse to further advance draconian biosecurity policies and global power grabs. Regardless of how the monkeypox situation plays out, two companies are already cashing in. As concern over monkeypox has risen, so too have the shares of Emergent Biosolutions and SIGA Technologies. Both companies essentially have monopolies in the US market, and other markets as well, on smallpox vaccines and treatments. Their main smallpox-focused products are, conveniently, also used to protect against or treat monkeypox as well. As a result, the shares of Emergent Biosolutions climbed 12% on Thursday, while those of SIGA soared 17.1%. For these companies, the monkeypox fears are a godsend, specifically for SIGA, which produces a smallpox treatment, known by its brand name TPOXX. It is SIGA’s only product. While some outlets have noted that the rise in the valuation of SIGA Technologies has coincided with recent concerns about monkeypox, essentially no attention has been given to the fact that the company is apparently the only piece of a powerful billionaire’s empire that isn’t currently crumbling. [...] However, by August 2001, BioPort stood to lose the Pentagon contracts – its only source of income. The Pentagon began preparing a report, due to be released in September 2001, that would detail a plan for letting BioPort go. Thanks to the September 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon, that report was never released. Shortly thereafter, the 2001 anthrax attacks began. Just months before, BioPort had contracted Battelle Memorial Institute to help rescue its flailing vaccine program. The deal gave Battelle “immediate exposure to the vaccine” and it was used in connection with the Pentagon-funded, gain-of- function anthrax program that involved both Ken Alibek and William C. Patrick III, two bioweapons experts with deep ties to the CIA. That program was housed at Battelle’s West Jefferson facility in Ohio. That facility is believed by many investigators to be the source of the anthrax used in the 2001 attacks. The ensuing panic from the anthrax attacks led the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to intervene. They gave BioPort its license back in January 2002 despite persisting safety concerns at its vaccine production facility in Michigan. BioPort was not content to merely see its past contracts with the Pentagon restored, however, as it began lobbying heavily for new contracts for anthrax vaccines intended for American civilians, postal workers and others. They would get them, largely thanks to HHS’ then-counter-terrorism adviser and soon to be HHS’ newest Assistant Secretary — Jerome Hauer. This he punctuated with his own commentary: “Well, duh!” o § AstroTurf/Lobbying/Politics⠀➾ # ⚓ Protocol ☛ Social_media’s_legal_foundation_just_crumbled_in Texas._Here’s_what’s_next.⠀⇛ The surprise Wednesday ruling by a panel of three federal appeals court judges allows Texas’ social media law to go into effect — and has led to panicked befuddlement among tech policy experts wondering how platforms could possibly comply, even if they wanted to, and what options the services have for challenging the ruling. o § Censorship/Free Speech⠀➾ # ⚓ Protocol ☛ Bing_censors_search_for_Xi_Jinping,_Citizen_Lab report_finds⠀⇛ # ⚓ The Register UK ☛ Microsoft_Bing_censors_politically sensitive_Chinese_terms⠀⇛ Microsoft search engine Bing censors terms deemed sensitive in China from its autosuggestion feature internationally, according to research from Citizen Lab. The University of Toronto research organization analyzed the search engine’s autosuggestion system for censorship of nearly 100,000 names in the United States, Canada and China in both English letters and Chinese characters. Testing was done by modifying region settings, language setting and IP address geolocation. o § Internet Policy/Net Neutrality⠀➾ # ⚓ Gemini:_bringing_the_sense_of_wonder_to_the_Internet again⠀⇛ The first time I have ever heard of the Internet was in 1993 while still in high school. A school employee, still newly graduated from Stanford, often mentioned the e-mail — something that was at the time mostly reserved to universities and libraries. The local public library had many of those VT-100 “dumb” terminals for catalogues and for access to various online resources. These terminals were text-only, black screens with either green or orange glowing ASCII letters. The library provided access to a number of Gopher sites and WAIS resources either via Telnet or with the Lynx browser. I’ve finally gained access to the nascent World Wide Web in November of 1995 when I heard about a new Internet cafe in town. That place had 20 or so of those VT-100 terminals for free, and eight “X terminals” with Unix GUI frontends (with Netscape Navigator 2.0, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and RealPlayer!) at the price of $3.50 an hour (or, $30 for a 10-hour prepaid punchcard). # ⚓ A_Call_for_a_Gemini_Without_TLS⠀⇛ It is almost certain that widely-accepted and used cryptography is compromised and is not a threat to governments (otherwise we would see a serious push for other technologies which include backdoors). In fact it is very likely that NSA and other such players are actively introducing and supporting certain encryption technologies. Some even believe that bitcoin is an NSA creation, as the creator was never revealed, and bitcoin is _the most traceable_ method of transacting. # ⚓ Is_a_Unix_Philosophy_Browser_Possible?⠀⇛ I think it is kind to say that Lagrange does one thing: browse the alternative protocols of the Internet. But in reality there are a few things it does well! What does it do? At the bottom, it implements a few different protocols, methods to access various kinds of sites: gopher, gemini, spartan, finger. As an end user, I am happy that it does that pretty transparently – I don’t have to ‘turn on gopher mode’ or anything like that, I can follow links and read. # ⚓ Et_in_Arcadia_Ego⠀⇛ Sparta, for them as don’t know, is a variant of gemini, without the (imo) unnecessary overhead of tls. This all appears to be a project of Michael Lazar, who’s jetforce I have been using to serve gemini here from the very beginning. ╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛ ¶ Lines in total: 6142 ➮ Generation completed at 02:41, i.e. 53 seconds to (re)generate ⟲
