Moving_From_Ubuntu_to_Another_GNU/Linux_Distro_Would_Harm_Microsoft_(or_Its Efforts_to_Control_the_Competition)⠀✐ Posted in Microsoft, Ubuntu at 10:29 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz Video_download_link | md5sum 14a82f0c391275a3edc4355bedbf9f8d Canonical Is Not on Our Side Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0 http://techrights.org/videos/canonical-loves-microsoft.webm Summary: Canonical has been in bed with Microsoft for a number of years; the relationship deepens despite the fact that Microsoft is blocking GNU/Linux users — including Ubuntu users — from booting an operating system of their choice on new computers A FEW hours ago Microsoft_and_Canonical_made_a_sort_of_joint_announcement promoting Microsoft’s proprietary software (see the the_second_comment_here if you think .NET is now “Open Source”). As we noted several times in recent years, e.g. here and here, Canonical quit promoting GNU/Linux. Nowadays it’s just pushing “clown” and Microsoft; it’s all about trying to generate revenue, not emancipating computer users. “It’s frustrating when you spend years if not decades helping such companies and then they go around your back to help your enemies.”The video above contains a number of observations, including the reasons we’ve not posted a lot lately (we’re busy carrying out site migrations for the most part). Maybe in the next 5 years Ubuntu will be just some ‘niche’ or legacy distro; as long as other GNU/Linux distros take its place, we’ll be fine. It signed its own death sentence or got a ticket for the funeral the moment Mark Shuttleworth (MS) started shilling Azure about a decade ago while closing bug #1 (not even bothering to fix it) [1, 2]. Canonical is working for Microsoft and Microsoft didn’t even buy Canonical! It’s frustrating when you spend years if not decades helping such companies and then they go around your back to help your enemies. Canonical should_submit antitrust_complaints_over_Microsoft_blocking_Linux, not work_with_the_abuser. Canonical’s opportunistic partnerships are a shot in its own foot. It cost a lot in terms of Canonical’s manpower; in the past Canonical had a real community and thus volunteers. █ ䷩ 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚎 248 ╒═══════════════════ 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════╕ (ℹ) Images, hyperlinks and comments at http://techrights.org/2022/08/16/only-37-is-desktop-laptop/#comments Gemini version at gemini://gemini.techrights.org/2022/08/16/only-37-is-desktop-laptop/ ⠀⌧ █▇▆▅▄▃▂▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ 08.16.22⠀▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ ⌧ Gemini_version_available_♊︎ ✐ This_is_Why_Windows_is_Doomed:_Over_60%_of_Web_Traffic_Comes_From_Mobile Devices_(Where_Microsoft_is_Near_0%)⠀✐ Posted in Hardware, Microsoft, Windows at 10:57 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz The supply chain woes seem to have accelerated these trends 🄸🄼🄰🄶🄴_🄳🄴🅂🄲🅁🄸🄿🅃🄸🄾🄽_⦇60_percent_for_mobile⦈_ 37% is desktop/laptop, but only 27% is Windows (with consistent downward trend) Summary: Nowadays the dominant operating system is Android (which is powered by Linux); Then we will be discussing the great Debian debate of 2022. Plus, we have our tips/tricks and software picks. All this and more coming up right now on Destination Linux to keep those penguins marching! o § Kernel Space⠀➾ # ⚓ DebugPoint ☛ Linux_Kernel_6.0_RC1_is_out_with_Run-Time Kernel_Verification⠀⇛ Following the Linux Kernel 5.19 released a few days back, Linus released the first release candidate of Linux 6.0 for testing. It officially closes the merge window for this release while you test. Why 6.0? Usually, the mainline Kernel version increases by the minor version and this release should have been Kernel 5.20. However, Linus decided to increase the significant version number, hence the Kernel 6.0. o § Graphics Stack⠀➾ # ⚓ CNX Software ☛ NVIDIA_Jetpack_5.0.2_release_supports_Ubuntu 20.04,_Jetson_AGX_Orin⠀⇛ The NVIDIA Jetpack 5.0.2 production release is out with Ubuntu 20.04, the Jetson Linux 35.1 BSP 1 with Linux Kernel 5.10, an UEFI-based bootloader, support for Jetson AGX Orin module and developer kit, as new as updated packages such as CUDA 11.4, TensorRT 8.4.1, cuDNN 8.4.1. NVIDIA Jetson modules and developer kits are nice little pieces of hardware for AI workloads, but the associated NVIDIA Jetpack SDK was based on the older Ubuntu 18.04 which was not suitable for some projects. But the good news is that Ubuntu 20.04 was being worked on and initially available through the Jetpack 5.0.0/5.0.1 developer previews, and NVIDIA Jetpack 5.0.2 SDK is the first production release with support for Ubuntu 20.04. o § Applications⠀➾ # ⚓ Its FOSS ☛ Marktext_is_an_Excellent_Editor_Even_for_Those Who_Don’t_Know_Markdown_–_It’s_FOSS⠀⇛ Another Markdown editor? Have we not seen all kinds of Markdown editors already? I understand that feeling. If you are a Markdown lover, from Joplin to Zettlr, you have tried most of them. And if you are not a Markdown fan, you probably don’t care about these editors. Markdown is an excellent markup language specially for people who write for the web. I am not going to go into the details here. We have an excellent Markdown starters guide if you are interested in learning more about it. My focus here is on introducing you to (another) Markdown editor, It’s called Marktext and it is an Electron app (don’t hate me just yet). [...] I have experimented with a number of markdown editors and there are plenty of good ones there. However, I took an instant liking to Marktext and it is going to be on my system for a long time. o § Instructionals/Technical⠀➾ # ⚓ markaicode by Mark ☛ How_to_Install_NVIDIA_Drivers_on_Linux Mint_21⠀⇛ Install the official Nvidia drivers if you use a Linux machine for graphics design or gaming. While most recent Linux Desktop systems have the Nouveau open-source graphics device driver for Nvidia video cards, it is not as feature-rich as the official Nvidia driver. The official Nvidia driver offers improved performance and additional functionality, making it the superior solution for demanding workloads. Installing the driver is simple, although it does need a few steps. To begin, identify your graphic card model and locate the necessary driver on the Nvidia website. After downloading the driver, you must unzip it and execute the installation. Following these instructions, you should see improved performance from your Nvidia card. # ⚓ Red Hat ☛ How_to_set_up_Packit_to_simplify_upstream_project integration⠀⇛ If you use open source projects from GitHub or GitLab in your infrastructure, you have probably established workflows to create project builds that you can install. You might create builds regularly and execute them in a similar manner across projects. Let’s say you want to build the code changes in Fedora Linux or CentOS Stream for each commit, release, or pull request in these projects. Packit can automate this policy, fold into a CI/CD pipeline, and do even more. Packit is an open source project that tests and builds RPM packages on Fedora Linux, CentOS Stream, and other distributions to ease the integration of upstream projects with the distributions. This article focuses on Packit Service, which operates on GitHub and GitLab. You can also install a command line interface (CLI) locally to run Packit on your desktop or laptop. # ⚓ Linux Shell Tips ☛ Useful_SSH_Cheat_Sheet_for_Linux_System Administrators⠀⇛ SSH or Secure Shell program is renowned for its secure operation of network services via a cryptographic network protocol. In most cases, the network interface in use has questionable security hence the need for SSH. # ⚓ Linux Shell Tips ☛ What_Is_a_Segmentation_Fault_in_Linux System?⠀⇛ To understand the concept of a segmentation fault in a Linux operating system environment, we have to first address the concept of segmentation. In operating systems; under process management, each process is associated with a distinct virtual address space, hence the concept of segmentation. Supposing a memory location like 0×877 is evident on your Linux operating system. Also, suppose two processes (A and B) have access to read this memory location (0×877). # ⚓ Linux Shell Tips ☛ Calcurse_–_A_CLI_Based_Calendar_and Scheduling_Tool_Linux⠀⇛ When you decide to fully dive into the Linux system ecosystem, you will soon realize that time is never fully on your side. You will want an organized time map to manage your computing objectives but find yourself failing to check some boxes just because you have not yet discovered the importance of having a calendar and scheduling tool on your Linux system. This article will walk us through the installation and basic usage of a CLI-based calendar and scheduling tool called Calcurse. # ⚓ TecMint ☛ How_to_Install_Latest_Vim_9.0_in_Linux_Systems⠀⇛ Vi has been around for a long, developed around 1976, it offered users traditional yet powerful features such as an effective editing interface, terminal control, and many more. However, it lacked certain captivating features for example multiple screens, syntax highlighting, multiple undo functionality, and so on, that many Unix/Linux users were looking for in a complete text editor. # ⚓ ID Root ☛ How_To_Install_Microsoft_Edge_on_Linux_Mint_21 [Ed: We oughtn’t recommend to people that they install Microsoft’s proprietary spyware that steals_passwords. There are better browsers out there, nobody should ever need Edge.]⠀⇛ # ⚓ Adriaan de Groot ☛ ZFS_volumes_and_VirtualBox_|_ [bobulate]⠀⇛ The command zfs create is used to create ZFS datasets. No surprise there. With the -V option, a volume is created rather than a regular dataset (e.g. a filesystem). So let’s create a 16GB volume on the pool called zippy (that’s a single SSD scratch drive attached to my system; the name isn’t important and your pool will probably be called something else). zfs create -V 16G zippy/freebsd12-test Now there’s a /dev/zvol/zippy/freebsd12-test character device. This can be written to. For all intents and purposes, it is a disk. The next step is to tell VirtualBox about the existence of this new disk. This is best done while VirtualBox (the UI) isn’t running. # ⚓ How_To_Fix_“Rmdir:_Directory_Not_Empty”_Error_In_Linux⠀⇛ The rmdir command is used to remove empty directories. If you attempt to remove a non-empty directory with this command, you’ll encounter the Rmdir Directory Not Empty error. That much is intended behavior, but some users have reported cases where they faced this error despite using rmdir on an empty directory. This happens due to reasons like file system errors or broken symbolic links. # ⚓ Network World ☛ The_simplicity_and_complexity_of_using quotes_on_Linux_|_Network_World⠀⇛ There are only a few special characters involved in working with character strings on the command line or in a script on Linux: the single quote, the double quote and the backslash. But the rules aren’t as obvious as one might think. In this post, we’ll look at the easy and the somewhat tricky uses of these special characters. # ⚓ Network World ☛ Using_the_watch_command_on_Linux_|_Network World⠀⇛ The watch command allows you to rerun commands in a loop until you stop it or run into a condition that stops the looping for you. It can be very useful when you’re waiting for something to change before you can move on to the next task. # ⚓ OSTechNix ☛ Check_Disk_Space_Using_Agedu_In_Linux_– OSTechNix⠀⇛ Running out of disk space? It is time to find out which directories and files are occupying the most disk space. Fortunately, checking Linux disk space is made easier with Agedu utility. This guide explains what is Agedu, how to install Agedu, and how to check disk space in Linux and find wasted disk space using Agedu. o § Games⠀➾ # ⚓ Drew DeVault ☛ Status_update,_August_2022⠀⇛ It is a blessedly cool morning here in Amsterdam. I was busy moving house earlier this month, so this update is a bit quieter than most. For a fun off-beat project this month, I started working on a GameBoy emulator written in Hare. No promises on when it will be functional or how much I plan on working on it – just doing it for fun. In more serious Hare news, I have implemented Thread- Local Storage (TLS) for qbe, our compiler backend. Hare’s standard library does not support multi- threading, but I needed this for Helios, whose driver library does support threads. It will also presumably be of use for cproc once it lands upstream. # ⚓ Adventure_game_graphics_with_DALL-E_2_–_Et_tu,_Cthulhu⠀⇛ I recently got access to OpenAI’s DALL-E 2 instance. It’s a lot of fun, but beyond its obvious application as a cornucopia of funny cat avatars, I think it’s now fit to use in certain kinds of creative work. There are already plenty of good articles out there on the model’s strengths and weaknesses, so I won’t go over that here other than to note that it’s not a threat to high art. It’s got an idea of what things look like and how they can visually fit together, but it’s very vague on how they work (e.g. anatomy, architecture, the finer points of Victorian-era dinner etiquette, art critics), and object inpainting aside, it doesn’t rise to the level of realism where I’d worry too much about the fake news potential either. However, with human guidance and a carefully chosen domain, it can still do some very impressive things. I’ve suspected that adventure game graphics in the point-and-click vein could be one of those domains, and since I’m helping someone dear to me realize such a game, I had the excuse I needed to explore it a little and write this case study. # ⚓ Tech Times ☛ Enthusiast_Creates_Arm64_Linux_Kernel_Capable of_Running_Nintendo_Switch_Games⠀⇛ # ⚓ Tom’s Hardware ☛ New_Linux_Build_Runs_Nintendo_Switch_Games on_Arm64_Devices⠀⇛ A Linux OS and Nintendo Switch enthusiast has mind- melded the two disparate systems to create Horizon Linux. In brief, a Redditor by the name of Kent J Hall has patched the Arm64 Linux kernel to run Nintendo Switch games natively. Hall stresses this isn’t an attempt to recreate Nintendo’s Horizon OS, and it isn’t meant to run on Switch hardware – rather the project simply hopes to make Switch games on any Arm64 hardware platform. After a false start or two, Hall decided to spend a chunk of his free time on the Horizon Linux project summarized above. Patching Arm64 Linux seemed the sensible route to reach his goal as it meant “you get Linux’s vast hardware driver support for free, so not only can it be virtualized on Apple silicon Macs, but it can run bare-metal on any arm64 hardware which supports Linux,” explained Hall. The project should work fine “even on lower-end hardware, given that there’s no need to emulate the CPU,” he added. Moreover the project is flexible, and holds promise for game preservation. * § Distributions and Operating Systems⠀➾ o ⚓ H2S Media ☛ Top_10_popular_Linux_distros_in_August_2022_–_Linux Shout⠀⇛ Let’s check out the list of the most popular Linux distros in August 2022, in case you are planning to switch to Linux OS. Unlike Windows and macOS, Linux is not just owned by some single brand instead it is free & open source and even offers multiple choices. Yes, of course, the Linux kernel is the thing that is common in all distros, so what makes them different? It is – features, ease of usage, updates, security, lightweight, packages, and interface. Although among regular Desktop users, Linux is not in majority, however, if we talk about servers then most of them are powered by Linux OS such as RedHat, Ubuntu, Debian, OpenSUSE, and others. Therefore, whether you are a student, administrator, developer, or just a common user who likes to explore Linux distros, here is the list of some most downloaded and popular Linux distros of August month in 2022. The first article in the series, Connect to services on Kubernetes easily with kube-service-bindings, introduced the tools we use for this simplified integration: kube-service- bindings and the Service Binding Operator (SBO). In this article and the next, we’ll set up a cluster with access to a MongoDB database. For our Kubernetes cluster, we use the Developer Sandbox for Red Hat OpenShift, a free service for developers to experiment and learn about open source tools. The articles use a MongoDB example hosted in GitHub to show you kube-service-bindings in action. This example will illustrate the process of deploying a Node.js and MongoDB application in OpenShift. The allegations against Dr Appelbaum were nothing more than a social media mob. The suicide of Frans Pop was very real, with a body and a note to prove it. The Debian Social Contract tells us we will not hide problems. Therefore, why was this body hidden for twelve years? Suicides are a matter of public record. A coroner conducts an inquest in open court. The suicide was closely intertwined with Debian culture. Hiding the suicide was closely intertwined with hiding Debian’s real face. Yet doing that is a slap in the face of the social contract. If Frans Pop had only become engaged with Debian a few weeks before his death and if he had some previous health issues then it would be correct to avoid public comment on that. But as he was working on a core part of the operating system, the Debian installer, he had been actively engaged with Debian for many years, he aligned the suicide with Debian Day and he communicated with us immediately before his death, it is unambiguous that Debian was a factor. It raises concern for the wellbeing of all volunteers. In a voluntary organization committed to transparency, this is exactly the type of risk that belongs in public. Here is the email where German developer Joerg Jaspert takes his stick to the volunteers who expressed concern about the suicide in public. Joerg’s assertion that discussion is “missing every kind of common sense and decency” is nonsense. Common sense means different things for different people. For most volunteers, common sense would suggest doing all that is possible to avoid another suicide. For people in positions of authority over other volunteers, common sense means covering it up. o § Devices/Embedded⠀➾ # ⚓ CNX Software ☛ myBuddy_280_dual_arm_robot_features Raspberry_Pi_4_SBC_and_ESP32_controllers⠀⇛ Elephants Robotics myBuddy 280, aka myBuddy 280 Pi, is a dual-arm collaborative robot for education with a 7-inch display powered by Raspberry Pi 4 SBC, and also features three ESP32-based M5Stack core modules that help with the internal communication between the motors and the Raspberry Pi board. If you’ve tried the 1.9x pre-releases you’ll have seen it depends on a set of C++ tools under the name BuildBox. Some hot codepaths that were part of the Python core are now outsourced to helper tools, specifically data storage (buildbox-casd, buildbox- fuse) and container creation (buildbox-run- bubblewrap). These tools implement remote-apis standards and are useful to other build tools, the only catch is that they are not yet widely available in distros, and neither are the BuildStream 2 prereleases. Separately, BuildStream 2 has some other hot codepaths written with Cython. If you’ve ever tried to install a Python package from PyPI and wondered why a package manager is running GCC, the answer is usually that it’s installing a source package and has to build some Cython code with your system’s C compiler. The way to avoid requiring GCC in this case is to ship prebuilt binary packages known as wheels. So that’s what we implemented for BuildStream 2 – and as a bonus, we can bundle prebuilt BuildBox binaries into these packages. The wheels have a platform compatibility tag of “manylinux_2_28.x86_64” so they should work on any x86_64 host with GLIBC 2.28 or later. # ⚓ Daniel Stenberg ☛ The_curl_release_cycle_|_daniel.haxx.se⠀⇛ In the curl project we do timed releases and we try to do them planned and scheduled long in advance. The dates are planned. The content is not. I have been the release manager for every single curl release done. 209 releases at current count. Having this role means I make sure things are in decent shape for releases and I do the actual mechanic act of running the release scripts etc on the release days. Since 2014, we make releases on Wednesdays, every eight weeks. We sometimes adjust the date slightly because of personal events (meaning: if I have a vacation when the release is about to happen, we can move it), and we have done several patch releases within a shorter time when the previous release proved to have a serious enough problem to warrant an out-of-schedule release. Even more specifically, I make the releases available at or around 8 am (central euro time) on the release days. The main objective is to stick to the 56 day interval. It probably goes without saying but let me be clear: curl is a software project that quite evidently will never be done or complete. It will keep getting fixes, improvements and features for as long as it lives, and as long as it lives we keep making new releases. # § Rust⠀➾ # ⚓ Rust Blog ☛ Contribute_to_the_diagnostic_translation effort!⠀⇛ The Rust Diagnostics working group is leading an effort to add support for internationalization of error messages in the compiler, allowing the compiler to produce output in languages other than English. * § Leftovers⠀➾ o § Proprietary⠀➾ # ⚓ Windows Latest ☛ Windows_11_KB5016629_is_causing_new issues,_Microsoft_confirms_one_bug⠀⇛ KB5016629: This month’s latest security update for Windows 11 is causing new issues for some folks, according to reports and Microsoft’s own updated documentation. # ⚓ The Verge ☛ Microsoft_finally_admits_Xbox_One_sales_were less_than_half_of_the_PS4⠀⇛ Official Xbox One sales have largely been a mystery, but now Microsoft is finally admitting the obvious: the PS4 outsold the Xbox One — by a lot. Unusually, then, after my last, rather negative post on such topics, may I be the one to introduce some constructive input and perhaps even some slight optimism? If I understand the motivations behind Collapse OS correctly, it is meant to provide a modest computing environment that can work on well-understood, commonplace, easily repaired and readily sourced hardware, with the software providing the environment itself being maintainable on the target hardware, as opposed to being cross-built on more powerful hardware and then deployed to simpler, less capable hardware. The envisaged scenario for its adoption is a world where powerful new hardware is no longer produced or readily available and where people must scavenge and “make do” with the hardware already produced. Although civilisation may have brought about its own collapse, the consolation is that so much hardware will have been strewn across the planet for a variety of purposes that even after semiconductor fabrication and sophisticated manufacturing have ceased, there will remain a bounty of hardware usable for people’s computational needs (whatever they may be). o § Reviews⠀➾ # ⚓ ZDNet ☛ Is_Elementary_OS_your_best_first_Linux distribution?_|_ZDNet⠀⇛ For about three years of my life, Elementary OS was my go-to operating system. Modern digital camera sensors have millions of photosites, each of which contains a microscopic photodiode. The number of pixels in the captured image is equal to the number of photodiodes. To demonstrate that concept, Electromechanical Productions used an Arduino to build “the worst digital camera of all time ever.” Photodiodes alone can’t detect color, only brightness. Professional and consumer digital cameras incorporate color filters and algorithms to interpolate color. But in this case, the picture is black and white. This “camera” doesn’t utilize color filters and doesn’t even have a lens. It also only has a resolution of 8 x 6 — 48 pixels in total. Each of those photosites is a simple photoresistor, which is a component with a variable resistance proportional to the intensity of the light that hits it. o § Mobile Systems/Mobile Applications⠀➾ # ⚓ The Verge ☛ Android_13_arrives_for_Pixel_phones_starting today⠀⇛ The list of updates arriving with this year’s version of Android is likely to be familiar if you’ve been keeping up with Android 13’s beta releases. Separately, 13 open source sustainability and security experts were also interviewed. The authors write that the low response-rate from public services “reflects the complexity of the subject, rather than a lack of effort or enthusiasm”. “It emerged that public services do not have adequate technology tools to establish open source software dependencies.” The researchers compiled a list of 30 critical software, open source projects. Examples include Curl, software for interacting with web content, M2crypto, a Python wrapper for OpenSSL, and Libxml2, a library for parsing XML documents. UC Global ramped up surveillance against Assange and shared audio and video footage from the embassy with “American intelligence.” “The United States Constitution shields American citizens from US government overreach even when the activities take place in a foreign embassy in a foreign country. Visitors who are lawyers, journalists and doctors frequently carry confidential information in their devices,” declared Richard Roth, who is the lead attorney representing the plaintiffs. “They had a reasonable expectation that the security guards at the Ecuadorian embassy in London would not be US government spies charged with delivering copies of their electronics to the CIA,” Roth added. Two of the plaintiffs are attorneys who have represented Assange—Margaret Rather Kunstler, a civil rights activist and human rights attorney, and Deborah Hrbek, a media lawyer. The other two plaintiffs are journalists Charles Glass and John Goetz, who worked for Der Spiegel when the German media organization first partnered with WikiLeaks to publish documents on the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.   The lawsuit comes around two months after United Kingdom Home Secretary Priti Patel approved the US extradition request against Assange. His legal team has submitted two separate appeals in the UK courts, yet it is increasingly evident that Assange could be flown to the US to face Espionage Act charges that civil liberties, human rights, and press freedom organizations around the world have condemned. According to the complaint [PDF] filed in a US court in the Southern District of New York, Glass, Goetz, Hrbek, and Kunstler, like all visitors, were required to “surrender” their electronic devices to UC Global employees hired by Ecuador to provide security for the embassy. What they did not know is that UC Global “copied the information stored on the devices” and allegedly shared the information with the CIA. Pompeo allegedly authorized and approved the action.Security required plaintiffs to leave their devices with them, which contained “confidential and privileged information about their sources or clients. I’ve only played a few hours as I don’t own a PlayStation or use their streaming service, but needless to say it is a worthy entry in the Souls series. It certainly has its typical Souls frustrations, but from my experience fits that mold of “Souls-hard” in its difficulty. So in the quest for a good PC Bloodborne-like we could boil it down to three main ingredients: Gothic horror, tense and thrilling combat, and (Souls) difficulty/fairness to the player. But I guess there’s some rule that you can only pick two, at best. Enter Thymesia, promoting its “Plague doctor”-like hero, Corvus, with some mysterious disease and a combat system with different temporary weapons, parries, dodges, etc. I think you can see where this is going. # ⚓ Boiling Steam ☛ The_R_Programming_Language_Is_Now_Fast Enough_to_Run_Games_on_Linux_with_Nara_–_Boiling_Steam⠀⇛ You may (or may not) be familiar with the existence of the R programming language. This is one very approachable language used mainly in the data science field and by more traditional statisticians as well. We have been using it extensively on Boiling Steam for numerous articles up until now. There’s a good chance that most of the charts you come across on our pages were made with R. Or even videos. Why are we talking about R today? Well, since the release of the new package called Nara (for NAtive RAster, not the ancient japanese city that you should definitely visit if you are in Japan), R is now capable of rendering graphics very fast. Don’t expect it to reach thousands of frames per second, but compared to libraries like ggplot2, used for charting, which take several seconds to generate vector graphics, Nara can easily produce graphics at above 30 fps. The author of the package has released two demos to showcase what it can actually do: a non-interactive version of Pacman, and a port of Another World on R. [...] One of the strength of the R language is its extraordinary community support. This is language that has by far surpassed all the commercial alternatives like SPSS because of its extreme extensibility and the explosion of packages available to use with R. All of it being under FOSS licenses. This is why this is a big thing in itself: making something possible in R will without doubt lead to more developers around the world to experiment with these new capabilities. o § Desktop Environments/WMs⠀➾ # § GNOME Desktop/GTK⠀➾ # ⚓ OMG Ubuntu ☛ Nautilus_43_Beta_Arrives_in_Ubuntu_22.10 Daily_Builds_–_OMG!_Ubuntu!⠀⇛ Nautilus 43 beta has arrived in the latest daily builds of Ubuntu 22.10 “Kinetic Kudu”. “And?”, you quizzically quip. For a detailed listing of the known distros, Click here. This guide will take you through the two most notable Linux distros embraced by the Linux community; the Elementary OS and the Linux Mint. Both OSes are based on Ubuntu, meaning they employ additional packages and updates from the same repositories as Ubuntu. So let’s dive in straight away, compare and contrast, and then give our final verdict. For a quick comparison between the Elementary OS and Linux Mint, scroll down to the significant differences section. [...] Both operating systems have their pros and cons. The elementary OS has a more modern way of switching between applications with the help of multi-task viewing. Still, if you prefer a more traditional desktop environment, Linux mint is best for you. Linux Mint is an easy-to-use OS as it is easy to install, has more apps, and requires less RAM of 2GB, and the fact that it resembles the Windows OS environment gives a new user an easier time familiarizing with it. On the other hand, the elementary OS is a bit more advanced cause of the following reasons it is pretty tricky to install on an Oracle Virtual box, requires a larger RAM of 4GB, has a limited number of apps, it employs the Ephemeral web browser which uses the Duck duck Go as its default search engine. This guide recommends the Linux Mint for a beginner, but if you want a bit of sophistication, you can go for elementary OS. # ⚓ FOSSLinux ☛ MX_Linux_review:_10_tips_and_tricks_to_get started_|_FOSS_Linux⠀⇛ The MX Linux is not as mainstream as its Debian- based distros. The Linux world is diverse. So, of course, each of the hundreds of Linux distributions has its birthday. However, a few deserve to be recognized above all others, and Debian is one of them. On August 16th, 1993, the Debian Project was officially founded by Ian Murdock (then an undergraduate at Purdue University). At that time, the concept of a “Linux distribution” was new. So Ian intended Debian to be a distribution that would be made openly, in the spirit of Linux and GNU. Debian was the only distribution open for every developer and user to contribute their work when it began. Furthermore, the creation of Debian was sponsored by the FSF’s GNU project for one year (November 1994 to November 1995). o § Canonical/Ubuntu Family⠀➾ # ⚓ Liliputing ☛ Ubuntu_Touch_now_available_for_the_Fairphone_4 –_Liliputing⠀⇛ The Fairphone 4 is an Android phone with mid-range specs that stands out for a few reasons. However, no matter what OS was chosen, more users started to think about their safety. Safety for everybody includes different parameters such as anonymity, no tracking by Third Parties, no leaking of personal data, no danger of virus/worms catching, no harmful advertisements, and no eavesdropping. [...] A Secure Browser is a browser with additional safety measures that automatically protect the user from unauthorized action from Third Parties. Safe browsers help with the distribution of cookies containing information about visited websites, passwords, and user login information. Safe browsers also do not provide access to personal data and control the Internet connection during safe operations as bank actions. Although other anonymous solutions such as VPN or proxies usually change IP addresses, change geolocation, and sometimes encrypt the transferring information (which for sure are reasonable anonymous measures), safe (secure) browsers obtain more comprehensive protection options. Safe browsers work independently from other software and plugins. All its configurations can be customized, for example, to indicate the websites where the secure browser will be automatically on. Some wide used browsers, such as Opera, Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, do have in their settings safety protection measures and plugins. Still, secure browsers provide better measures without the need of complicated studying or adjusting of the settings. Check the 5 best secure browsers for Linux below. This is because free() isn’t passed an explicit size of what to free, which implies that it must get this information from elsewhere. The traditional way the C memory allocator does this is to put information about the size of the allocation in a hidden area either before or after the memory it returns (often before, because it’s less likely to get accidentally overwritten there). (That C memory allocators store the size of allocations they’ve handed out is clear to anyone who’s read through the small malloc() implementation in K&R.) # ⚓ uni Toronto ☛ My_adventure_with_URLs_in_a_Grafana_that’s behind_a_reverse_proxy⠀⇛ I was oblique in yesterday’s entry, but today I’m going to talk about the concrete issue I’m seeing because it makes a good illustration of how modern web environments can be rather complicated. We run Grafana behind a reverse proxy as part of a website, with all of Grafana under the /grafana/ path. One of the things you can add to a Grafana dashboard is links, either to other dashboards or to URLs. I want all of our dashboards to have a link to the front page of our overall metrics site. The obvious way to configure this is to tell Grafana that you want a link to ‘/’, which as a raw link in HTML is an absolute path to the root of the current web server in the current scheme. When I actually do this, the link is actually rendered (in the resulting HTML) as a link to ‘/ grafana/’, which is the root of the Grafana portion of the website. Grafana is partially configured so that it knows what this is, in that on the one hand it knows what the web server’s root URL for it is, but on the other hand its own post-proxy root is ‘/ ’ (in Apache terminology, we do a ProxyPass of ‘/ grafana/’ to ‘localhost:3000/’). This happens in both Firefox and Chrome, and I’ve used Firefox’s developer tools to verify that the ‘href’ of the link in the HTML is ‘/grafana/’ (as opposed to, eg, the link getting rewritten by Javascript on the fly when you hover or click on it). # ⚓ InfoQ ☛ How_to_Fight_Climate_Change_as_a_Software Engineer⠀⇛ We need to reduce and eliminate greenhouse gas emissions in order to stop climate change. Algorithmic decision-making systems are used more than ever by organizations, educational institutions, and governments looking for ways to increase understanding and make predictions. The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is working through this issue, and its many scenarios, to be able to say useful things about how this relates to software freedom. Our call for papers on Copilot was a first step in this direction. Though complex, we are still talking about proprietary software systems which integrate AI. Often, they are algorithmic systems where only the inputs and outputs can be viewed. It is trained with a selection of base categories of information, after which information goes in and a verdict comes out — but what led to the conclusion is unknown. This makes AI systems less straightforwardly understandable, even by the people who wrote the code. These systems (referred to as black box systems) can have the potential or intent to do good, but technology is not objective — and at the FSF, we believe that all software should be free. And when it comes to governments, they have the responsibility to demand for the software they use to be free, and the public has a right to the software. The scale to which the increased use of artificial intelligence is affecting people’s lives is immense, making this matter of computational sovereignty all the more urgent. # ⚓ Venture Beat ☛ Did_data_drift_in_AI_models_cause_the Equifax_credit_score_glitch?_|_VentureBeat⠀⇛ Earlier this year, from March 17 to April 6, 2022, credit reporting agency Equifax had an issue with its systems that led to incorrect credit scores for consumers being reported. For centuries it was printed matter at biological eye-scale that captured the breadth of human knowledge, whether it be cuneiform tablets struck with a stylus, great books hand-scribed in ink on parchment and carefully bound, or mass-printed novels by those masters of high literature, Dan Brown and J. K. Rowling. But it isn’t merely elevated fiction with which we concern ourselves: we have also amassed great quantities of administrative information communicated through the ubiquitous paper “memo,” the most important means of corporate and governmental communication during the brief yet sorrowful worldwide flirtation with the “office.” Not unlike Mycenaean Linear B in its day, otherwise meaningless terms such as “human resources” and “biz cas Friday” might never have been decoded in our time without such a corpus. Surveillance is ridiculously cheap for governments. Many have passed laws that obligate the surveillance industry—most notably, the mobile network operators—to share their take “at cost,” and we know law enforcement uses it a lot. So why is so much cheap surveillance available for purchase? Telephones work because telcos can route calls to and from them. The backbone and its routing tables are trivial compared with the airgap from the mobile base station to the wireless device, where there is no escape from knowing which phones are where. Because bandwidth is limited and everybody and their Internet of Things (IoT) gadget has a SIM card these days, the density of mobile base stations has increased, which has reduced the uncertainty of the position from tens of kilometers in the 1960s to tens of meters today. o § Environment⠀➾ # § Energy⠀➾ # ⚓ CNET ☛ The_Ethereum_Merge_Explained⠀⇛ You may think crypto is the future, or you may regard it as a scam. Cryptocurrency critics argue that coins like bitcoin and ether are useless and consume enormous amounts of electricity. The first point is polarizing and subjective, but the second is unequivocally true.
