oiaohm “However, ACMA advises that there are URLs on the published list that have never been the subject of a complaint or ACMA investigation, and have never been included on the ACMA blacklist.”  That line that you quoted schestowitz Mar 21 00:21
oiaohm That really shows the status of the ACMA the minister has never seen the black list. Mar 21 00:22
oiaohm So how can he know what was and was not on it. Mar 21 00:22
oiaohm Other then ACMA also prosecutes people for false respentations.   So even if the list is false they will be out to attack someone. Mar 21 00:23
_Hicham_1 flash on linux always sucks Mar 21 00:34
oiaohm Using adobe flash or the open source version _Hicham_1 Mar 21 00:35
oiaohm Open source version yes it suxs. Mar 21 00:35
_Hicham_1 even the proprietary sucks on old machines Mar 21 00:36
_Hicham_1 it is such a resource hog Mar 21 00:37
oiaohm flash on windows is not much better. Mar 21 00:37
_Hicham_1 oiaohm : better than linux anyway Mar 21 00:37
oiaohm Most people don’t see it running a service as SYSTEM user on windows. Mar 21 00:37
_Hicham_1 flash? Mar 21 00:38
oiaohm Yes flash. Mar 21 00:38
_Hicham_1 didnt notice that Mar 21 00:38
oiaohm Some of its memory usage is hidden on windows. Mar 21 00:38
_Hicham_1 that is how they optimize it? Mar 21 00:38
_Hicham_1 wow Mar 21 00:38
oiaohm Yep. Mar 21 00:38
oiaohm Note system user can remove every file from the harddrive with the OS is running under windows _Hicham_1 Mar 21 00:39
_Hicham_1 I know Mar 21 00:39
_Hicham_1 the system user is a super user on windows Mar 21 00:39
oiaohm So I would never call Windows flash better. Mar 21 00:39
oiaohm Linux flash is more truthful and secure. Mar 21 00:40
_Hicham_1 so the flash plugin is just a backdoor running inside a browser Mar 21 00:40
_Hicham_1 how can u tell? Mar 21 00:40
oiaohm Some of the exploits that worked on old flashs under windows don’t work under Linux because it does not have a super user. Mar 21 00:40
oiaohm Under windows flash can be a back door. Mar 21 00:41
oiaohm Last years pwn2own hacker exploited the system user server of flash on windows to take home the windows laptop. Mar 21 00:41
_Hicham_1 Windows is just a slappy whore Mar 21 00:41
oiaohm When something is running better under windows start asking how. Mar 21 00:42
oiaohm Lot of the answers are not good. Mar 21 00:42
_Hicham_1 I know that windows has a bad record with security Mar 21 00:43
_Hicham_1 i never trust it Mar 21 00:43
oiaohm Vista made it worse. Mar 21 00:43
oiaohm More applications are using services to avoid UAC under vista still as system user. Mar 21 00:43
oiaohm UAC increased the numbers of exploit points in windows not decreased them. Mar 21 00:44
oiaohm So all the users pain was for nothing. Mar 21 00:44
_Hicham_1 fucking microsoft with fucking architecture Mar 21 00:44
_Hicham_1 I dont know why they still develop products Mar 21 00:45
oiaohm Windows NT base design is basically perfect. Mar 21 00:45
_Hicham_1 all what they do is help spreading virii Mar 21 00:45
oiaohm Just Microsoft developers don’t follow it. Mar 21 00:45
_Hicham_1 well, nt have been merged with 3.1 kernel Mar 21 00:45
_Hicham_1 that what gave XP Mar 21 00:45
oiaohm NT design is a design of a Real-time os. Mar 21 00:45
oiaohm That was the first thing they screwed up. Mar 21 00:46
_Hicham_1 why they merge 3.1 with is it then? Mar 21 00:46
oiaohm Put the wrong locking system on top so the Real-time support no longer worked then. Mar 21 00:46
oiaohm They never merged with 3.1 Mar 21 00:46
oiaohm Error after error.   NT perfectly good permissions system. Mar 21 00:47
oiaohm Services can start up as lower users if set. Mar 21 00:47
oiaohm Guess what the features are there just not enforced. Mar 21 00:47
oiaohm Most of windows problems are pure lazyness. Mar 21 00:47
_Hicham_1 lazyness or because there are lobbies that do not want a secure system? Mar 21 00:49
oiaohm Its why people like me who do secuirity audits almost fell like killing someone at MS.  Its not like the OS is not able to do secuirty reasonablely well. Mar 21 00:49
MinceR “develop” is a strong word for what m$ does with products Mar 21 00:49
_Hicham_1 microsoft buys products Mar 21 00:50
_Hicham_1 wraps them into a nice GUI Mar 21 00:50
oiaohm If MS was building a bridge design would be good but everything would be tack welded. Mar 21 00:50
_Hicham_1 and sells them Mar 21 00:50
MinceR nice? Mar 21 00:50
oiaohm So a some random point the complete thing would fall into the river. Mar 21 00:51
_Hicham_1 MinceR : yes, they have a lot of artists Mar 21 00:51
oiaohm Hopefully when no one was driving on it. Mar 21 00:51
MinceR if m$ was to build a bridge, first they’d build an existing bridge, then hack it around to appear “nicer” but in the process they’d make it useless as a bridge Mar 21 00:51
oiaohm MinceR NT they did build from scrach. Mar 21 00:51
oiaohm and its basicaly tack weldered so it works. Mar 21 00:52
MinceR correction: some people they’ve borrowed from DEC did build it from scratch Mar 21 00:52
oiaohm Developer they got from DEC designed NT. Mar 21 00:52
MinceR adding m$-grade stupidity to the dinosaur design of VMS Mar 21 00:52
MinceR afaik that guy brought his own team with him. Mar 21 00:52
oiaohm then other MS developers were assigned to build parts. Mar 21 00:52
oiaohm Anything done by the DEC guy team is done right. Mar 21 00:53
oiaohm Anything done by the MS existing team has been a level 10 nightmares. Mar 21 00:53
oiaohm Basically tack welded NT so it looked right so they could sell it with the idea of fixing problems latter. Mar 21 00:53
MinceR gn Mar 21 00:54
oiaohm Problem is next lot saw the tack welds and tacked more on and more on … Until you have major nightmare. Mar 21 00:54
oiaohm Linux kernel also has had the developer equals of tack welds in places. Mar 21 00:54
oiaohm Big Kernel Lock in Linux kernel was basically a tack weld that was 98 percent slag and working by some form of luck. Mar 21 00:55
oiaohm Remember code development and engineering have a lot in common. Mar 21 00:56
oiaohm Biggest problem MS has these days is some of the applicatiosn that use windows depends on there tack welds. Mar 21 01:01
Balrog I heard reports that NT at least worked somewhat. Mar 21 01:05
Balrog (Version 4 this is) Mar 21 01:05
oiaohm Right from the first release version of NT there were tack welded sections that still exist in Windows 7. Mar 21 01:06
oiaohm Resources have going into making windows looking pritty instead of removing core faults. Mar 21 01:07
_Hicham_1 that is the main goal of microsoft Mar 21 01:09
_Hicham_1 always create new theme engines Mar 21 01:09
Balrog stuff that might have been needed back then, but no longer needed now Mar 21 01:11
Balrog like Mac OS Classic … portions of OS 9.2.2 code were directly descended from 0.97 Mar 21 01:12
Balrog actually, *much* of the code Mar 21 01:12
oiaohm Funny enough requirements for a graphical workstation have not really changed since 1887. Mar 21 01:12
oiaohm Ie pre NT existance. Mar 21 01:12
Balrog but memory management, disk management, stuff like that has changed Mar 21 01:12
oiaohm Tech chanaged yes. Mar 21 01:13
oiaohm Base requirements what they should do has not. Mar 21 01:13
Balrog then they try to shoehorn support in, which in the case of Mac OS 9 and below, failed miserably Mar 21 01:13
Balrog it wasn’t designed for that at all. Mar 21 01:13
oiaohm Mac OS 9 and before had design glitches. Mar 21 01:13
oiaohm It was not designed as a multi user workstation. Mar 21 01:14
oiaohm NT was designed to be a server and workstation OS. Mar 21 01:14
Balrog not only that … large portions were in 68K assembly, even after it became PPC, and changing it would break programs badly Mar 21 01:14
oiaohm You forget NT used to run on PPC. Mar 21 01:15
Balrog you’re right about that; I’m not speaking about that part here…. Mar 21 01:15
Balrog oiaohm: sure did. But NT didn’t rely on emulated 68K code Mar 21 01:15
oiaohm NT was designed CPU netural. Mar 21 01:15
Balrog but that fell through very quickly Mar 21 01:15
oiaohm This is my point NT design is great. Mar 21 01:16
oiaohm Current day implmentation eep stuffed. Mar 21 01:16
Balrog NT design was ok, early on. It fell apart fast. Mar 21 01:16
Balrog but NT was not really MS-designed Mar 21 01:16
oiaohm Due to tack welding. Mar 21 01:16
Balrog it came from VMS and OS/2 Mar 21 01:16
oiaohm Ok we cannot work out how to use locking that is real-time compadible. Mar 21 01:16
oiaohm So we just use spinlocks that are not real-time compadible so breaking the RTOS feature of nt Mar 21 01:17
oiaohm And the list goes on. Mar 21 01:17
Balrog yeah…. Mar 21 01:17
oiaohm Short cut after Short cut. Mar 21 01:17
Balrog laz programming Mar 21 01:17
Balrog lazy * Mar 21 01:18
oiaohm Linux kernel is at long last starting to remove its tack welds. Mar 21 01:18
Balrog worst problem you can have Mar 21 01:18
oiaohm Linux has been good there tack welds have not been exposed to user mode programs. Mar 21 01:18
Balrog well, the module ABI is very unstable Mar 21 01:19
Balrog different for each build of the kernel Mar 21 01:19
oiaohm MS other problem. Mar 21 01:19
oiaohm There driver ABI has tack welds in it and they have set them in stone. Mar 21 01:19
Balrog not a good thing Mar 21 01:19
oiaohm Yes the downside of binary drivers. Mar 21 01:20
oiaohm If you internals are crap you get stuck with crap internals. Mar 21 01:20
Balrog yeah… Mar 21 01:20
oiaohm Linux kernel has very valid reason not to make its ABI constant. Mar 21 01:20
oiaohm For drivers. Mar 21 01:20
Balrog that causes problems for people who want to use certain apps; but the companies who write those apps are to blame Mar 21 01:21
*zer0c00l (n=zer0c00l@210.212.255.131) has joined #boycottnovell Mar 21 01:22
oiaohm Windows internal design might be passed repair without upsetting lots of users. Mar 21 01:22
Balrog we all say what happened when they changed the ABI in vista…. Mar 21 01:23
oiaohm That was correcting the video stack. Mar 21 01:24
Balrog see * Mar 21 01:24
Balrog yeah, among other things Mar 21 01:24
Balrog they made a few other changes with drivers as well, I heard Mar 21 01:24
oiaohm There are a few points in the driver stack that will take out 99 percent of all drivers for windows forcing them to be redisgined left. Mar 21 01:24
oiaohm Basically 0 percent driver backwards compadiblity. Mar 21 01:25
Balrog not good. Mar 21 01:25
oiaohm Does this explain why MS has been talking about doing away with NT based and going to a new .net based OS. Mar 21 01:26
oiaohm Pain is about going to be equal. Mar 21 01:26
Balrog do you think that will ever happen? I smell vaporware here Mar 21 01:27
Balrog also doing that sounds a lot like Mac OS 9 –> OS X Mar 21 01:27
Balrog except that Apple has control of hardware ……. Mar 21 01:27
Balrog MS doesn’t. Mar 21 01:27
oiaohm In embeded devices MS already sells a .net based OS. Mar 21 01:28
Balrog what’s it called? Mar 21 01:28
oiaohm http://www.windowsfordevices.com/a…  << That. Mar 21 01:29
Balrog it’s easy to write an os for that kind of stuff (in relative terms) Mar 21 01:31
Balrog limited feature set, limited hardware…. Mar 21 01:31
_Hicham_1 oiaohm : where do u work at? Mar 21 01:45

_Hicham_1 MethodOne : use Moonlight then Mar 21 01:47
MethodOne i get the unsupported platform message when i try to view the games Mar 21 01:58
MethodOne i feel that i have no use for moonlight because a lot of the sites i know of that use silverlight are bribed by microsoft to use it Mar 21 02:00

zer0c00l “unsupported platform” right? change it to “supported platform” Mar 21 02:12
zer0c00l silverlight divides the web Mar 21 02:15
MethodOne i wish the site used flash instead Mar 21 02:15
zer0c00l yeah Mar 21 02:15
zer0c00l switching useragent works for you? Mar 21 02:16
MethodOne nope Mar 21 02:17
_Hicham_1 MethodeOne : what browser are u using? Mar 21 02:17
MethodOne firefox Mar 21 02:17
_Hicham_1 Konqueror has some sneaky plugin to identify itself as another browser Mar 21 02:19
zer0c00l http://chrispederick.com/work/user… this is for firefox Mar 21 02:19
_Hicham_1 that is it Mar 21 02:20

_Hicham_1 but Linux still exists in ur user agent? Mar 21 02:20
_Hicham_1 no? Mar 21 02:21
MethodOne i tried using a media player plugin that supports windows media, but it looks like the site want’s microsoft’s plugin Mar 21 02:21
MethodOne wants* Mar 21 02:21
_Hicham_1 u have to change Linux to Windows in the user agent Mar 21 02:21
MethodOne i did that Mar 21 02:21
MethodOne the site wants the real windows media plugin Mar 21 02:21
oiaohm _Hicham_1: Lots of different places is the simplest descriptions for where I work. Mar 21 02:22

oiaohm Data recovery, Security Auditing,  System Design, machine repairs and System Admin(for quite a few networks).  Kinda makes me a jack of all trades. _Hicham_1 Mar 21 02:25

oiaohm Area where I am does not have a large company with enough money to employee me with my skills full time.  So I am kinda shared. Mar 21 02:26
oiaohm Kinda makes me different _Hicham_1 Mar 21 02:27
_Hicham_1 oiaohm : I greatly appreciate discussing things with u Mar 21 02:28
oiaohm Part of the problem is I hate built up cities. Mar 21 02:29
oiaohm Where I live I never have a single traffic jam. Mar 21 02:29
_Hicham_1 oiaohm : do u live far from Sydney? Mar 21 02:30
oiaohm Over 9 hours away from Sydney Mar 21 02:30
oiaohm By road. Mar 21 02:31
MethodOne right now i’m trying out the beta of xandros presto, which has the realplayer plugin.  let me boot into my arch installation and see if i get the same message with videos in the gecko-mediaplayer plugin. Mar 21 02:31

oiaohm I guess you job is a fairly normal one _Hicham_1 Mar 21 02:35
_Hicham_1 oiaohm : yes Mar 21 02:35
oiaohm Worst jobs is doing on site data recovery assessment in a burn out building. Mar 21 02:36

oiaohm Yes job is locating and packing the machines for shipping for data recovery.  And hopefully not running accross a missed corpse. Mar 21 02:38
_Hicham_1 what a bad job Mar 21 02:38
_Hicham_1 is it well paid at least? Mar 21 02:38
oiaohm You have to wear resporators all the time. Mar 21 02:38
oiaohm And lots of other protective gear. Mar 21 02:39
oiaohm packing is the worst bit you have to clean the machines as much as able before they are packed. Mar 21 02:40
_Hicham_1 is it ur job to do that? Mar 21 02:40
oiaohm Sometimes. Mar 21 02:40
oiaohm Its over flow.  I fill lots of gaps. Mar 21 02:40
oiaohm This is where I am different I don’t know what I will be doing for the next 24 hours.  It could be anything. Mar 21 02:41
oiaohm Or nothing. Mar 21 02:41
_Hicham_1 did u work with gcc team? Mar 21 02:42
oiaohm I have submited ideas and design alterations to the gcc team. Mar 21 02:42
oiaohm Most of them have been intergrated in time. Mar 21 02:42
oiaohm Not been a developer in the gcc team. Mar 21 02:43
oiaohm With most closed source coding projects I interface with I am either the secuirty auditor of the program or internal struct designer not a coder. Mar 21 02:44
oiaohm Makes me way different to most there as well. Mar 21 02:45
_Hicham_1 so u mostly do design? Mar 21 02:45
_Hicham_1 no coding? Mar 21 02:45
oiaohm Design and auditing. Mar 21 02:46
oiaohm I read code quite well.   Just not that effective at writing it from scratch. Mar 21 02:46
oiaohm Very effective at finding coder screw ups. Mar 21 02:47
*MethodOne has quit (“Ex-Chat”) Mar 21 02:47
_Hicham_1 do u use some standard methods? Mar 21 02:48
oiaohm Mixture of automatic tools and extracting base designs and checking. Mar 21 02:49
oiaohm Suprising how may things are simple base design errrors like not checking what user is doing the action. Mar 21 02:49
oiaohm When dealing with computers I am a perfectionist.   Home life kinda the other way. Mar 21 02:51
oiaohm perfectionists don’t make good coders. Mar 21 02:52
oiaohm My nature leads to over engnerining the solution. Mar 21 02:52
oiaohm Also leads to me hating something about all OS’s out there. Mar 21 02:53

tacone is there any real problem with the current theme ? Mar 21 18:06
schestowitz I could make a theme swtcher Mar 21 18:06
schestowitz tacone: no, it works well Mar 21 18:06

schestowitz And they were sometimes made to suit the theme Mar 21 18:06

  2. Supreme Court of the UK, Which Habitually Throws Out European Patents, May Overturn Troublesome Unwired Planet v Huawei Decision

A lot of European Patents are facing growing scrutiny from courts (Team UPC, including Bristows, publicly complains about it this month) and "greenwashing" of the Office won't be enough to paint/frame these patents as "ethical"

  3. German Federal Patent Court Curbs the Patent Maximalism of the EPO, Which Promotes Patents on Nature and/or Maths Every Single Day

European courts are restraining the EPO, which has been trying to bypass or replace such courts (with the UPC); it certainly seems as though European Patents rapidly lose their legitimacy or much-needed presumption of validity

  4. Any 'Linux' Foundation Needs to Be Managed by Geeks, Not Politicians and PR People

Linux bureaucracy has put profits way ahead of technical merits and this poses a growing threat or constitutes risk to the direction of the project, not to mention its ownership

  6. Code of Coercion

Entryism is visible for all to see, but pointing it out is becoming a risky gambit because of the "be nice!" (or "be polite!") crowd, which shields the perpetrators of a slow and gradual corporate takeover

  7. António Campinos Would Not Refer to the EPO's Enlarged Board of Appeal If He Did Not Control the Outcomes

António Campinos and his ilk aren’t interested in patent quality because his former ‘boss’, who publicly denied there were issues and vainly rejected patent quality concerns as illegitimate, is now controlled by him (reversal of roles) and many new appointees at the top are "yes men" (or women) of Campinos, former colleagues whom he bossed at EUIPO (as expected)

  9. USPTO and EPO Both Slammed for Abandoning Patent Quality and Violating the Law/Caselaw in Order to Grant Illegitimate Patents on Life/Nature and Mathematics

Mr. Iancu, the ‘American Battistelli’ (appointed owing to nepotism), mirrors the ‘Battistelli operandi’, which boils down to treating judges like they’re stooges and justices like an ignorable nuisance — all this in the name of litigation profits, which necessitate constant wars over illegitimate patents (it is expensive to prove their illegitimacy)

  13. The EPO's Use of Phrases Like “High-Quality Patent Services” Means They Know High-Quality European Patents Are 'Bygones'

The EPO does a really poor job hiding the fact that its last remaining objective is to grant as many European Patents as possible (and as fast as possible), conveniently conflating quality with pace

  16. The Likes of Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA), Team Campinos and Team UPC Don't Represent Europe But Hurt Europe

The abject disinterest in patent quality and patent validity (as judged by courts) threatens Europe but not to the detriment of those who are in the 'business' of suing and printing lots of worthless patents

  17. The Linux Foundation Needs to Change Course Before GNU/Linux (as a Free Operating System) is Dead

The issues associated with the Linux Foundation are not entirely new; but Linux now incorporates so many restrictions and contains so many binary blobs that one begins to wonder what "Linux" even means

  18. Largest Patent Offices Try to Leave Courts in a State of Disarray to Enable the Granting of Fake Patents in the US and Europe

Like a monarchy that effectively runs all branches of government the management of the EPO is trying to work around the judiciary; the same is increasingly happening (or at least attempted) in the United States

  21. Freedom is Not a Business and Those Who Make 'Business' by Giving it Away Deserve Naming

Free software is being parceled and sold to private monopolisers; those who facilitate the process enrich themselves and pose a growing threat to freedom in general — a subject we intend to tackle in the near future

  22. Concluding the Linux Foundation (LF) “Putting the CON in Conference!” (Part 3)

Conferences constructed or put together based on payments rather than merit pose a risk to the freedom of free software; we conclude our series about events set up by the largest of culprits, which profits from this erosion of freedom

  23. “Mention the War” (of Microsoft Against GNU/Linux)

The GNU/Linux desktop (or laptops) seems to be languishing or deteriorating, making way for proprietary takeover in the form of Vista 10 and Chrome OS and “web apps” (surveillance); nobody seems too bothered — certainly not the Linux Foundation — by the fact that GNU/Linux itself is being relegated or demoted to a mere “app” on these surveillance platforms (WSL, Croûton and so on)

  24. The European Patent Office Does Not Care About the Law, Today's Management Constantly Attempts to Bypass the Law

Many EPs (European Patents) are actually "IPs" (invalid patents); the EPO doesn't seem to care and it is again paying for corrupt scholars to toe the party line

  25. The US Supreme Court (SCOTUS) Once Again Pours Cold Water on Patent Maximalists

Any hopes of a rebound or turnaround have just been shattered because a bizarre attack on the appeal process (misusing tribal immunity) fell on deaf ears and software patents definitely don't interest the highest court, which already deemed them invalid half a decade ago

    Links for the day

  27. Links 16/4/2019: CentOS Turns 15, Qt Creator 4.9.0 Released

    Links for the day

  28. GNU/Linux is Being Eaten Alive by Large Corporations With Their Agenda

A sort of corporate takeover, or moneyed interests at the expense of our freedom, can be seen as a 'soft coup' whose eventual outcome would involve all or most servers in 'the cloud' (surveillance with patent tax as part of the rental fees) and almost no laptops/desktops which aren't remotely controlled (and limit what's run on them, using something like UEFI 'secure boot')

  29. Reader's Claim That Rules Similar to the Code of Conduct (CoC) Were 'Imposed' on LibrePlanet and the FSF

Restrictions on speech are said to have been spread and reached some of the most liberal circles, according to a credible veteran who opposes illiberal censorship

  30. Corporate Media Will Never Cover the EPO's Violations of the Law With Respect to Patent Scope

The greed-driven gold rush for patents has resulted in a large pool of European Patents that have no legitimacy and are nowadays associated with low legal certainty; the media isn't interested in covering such a monumental disaster that poses a threat to the whole of Europe
