schestowitz[TR2]Funny, how they never went public. Why?Sep 17 02:43
schestowitz[TR2]Protecting secrecy: They can maintain a high level of secrecy regarding its client lists and internal operations.Sep 17 02:43
schestowitz[TR2]Avoiding scrutiny: They can avoid the public pressure and accountability that comes with being public, which can be particularly useful given the controversial work it has done with clients like opi--d manufacturers.Sep 17 02:43
schestowitz[TR2]Examples are many, but here's a couple of big ones:Sep 17 02:43
schestowitz[TR2]McKinsey faced significant public backlash and paid a nearly $600 million settlement related to its work with op i oid manufacturers. Imagine if they were public?Sep 17 02:43
schestowitz[TR2]Revelations about the firm's large contracts with the French government during the COVID-19 pandemic also brought public scrutiny. Imagine if they were public?Sep 17 02:43
schestowitz[TR2]The firm has also settled claims in bankruptcy cases due to allegations of failing to make proper disclosures, leading to concerns about its candor and role in managing public funds. Imagine if they were public?Sep 17 02:43
schestowitz[TR2]However, many of their clients are public, and they are the ones that receive the scrutiny and suffer the implications.Sep 17 02:43

schestowitz[TR2]The core points of the article and its context include:Sep 17 02:45
schestowitz[TR2]Challenging the McKinsey studies: The headline references influential 2015 research by the consulting firm McKinsey that suggested a link between corporate diversity and financial outperformance. Mackintosh's article and other academic work question the methodology and conclusions of the McKinsey research.Sep 17 02:45
schestowitz[TR2]Marketplace testing and recent findings: The article notes that since 2015, the idea that diversity directly leads to higher profits has been "tested in the fire of the marketplace and failed," with academics unable to replicate the findings. Subsequent research, like a University of Chicago study in 2024, found no statistically significant link between executive diversity and profitability in S&P 500 companies.Sep 17 02:45

schestowitz[TR2]I have a friend in corporate real estate (not affiliated with IBM) who said without a doubt that the primary reason for RTO is because of...corporate real estate. People in seats are needed to justify cost and budget of space, plus its better for the micro-economy of the immediate area. Companies are abandoning the "green this and that" bandwagon in order to justify commuters commuting again. It's all about $$$. However, managementSep 17 02:46
schestowitz[TR2] teams are indeed using it as a golden opportunity to get rid of folks. Never let a good opportunity go to waste.Sep 17 02:46
schestowitz[TR2]As for myself - IBM can go phuque themselves. I got "mandated" last year for RTO and I haven't been back to my office yet - which is an hour commute on a good day. There is nobody I need to associate with in that office, so I'm not doing it. I've checkout out emotionally from this job anyway and Im just using IBM as a cash cow until my next move is ready in early 2026. They used me, so I will use them.Sep 17 02:46

schestowitz[TR2]India plays both sides of the fence with the Russia/China regimes and the US. They will never be a strong US friend, at least with their current leadership. The US needs to exercise caution with them and restrict the flow of intellectual information to them since the information could easily fall into Russian and Chinese hands. So yes, we should be very careful henceforth in our dealings with IndiaSep 17 02:48

schestowitz[TR2]IBM like most of corporate America will do what all major companies listed on the Stock exchange do in this era, priotise share holders. So if India becomes something too expensive for Shareholders and Profits, they will just move to something else to protect profits and shareholder value (just like Oracle, MSoft, Salesforce, Apple,Sep 17 02:48
schestowitz[TR2]You really want to change the dynamic, you have to change the whole thinking, and put employee value == or > Shareholder value. But in a world run by stock markets and the debt ponzi scheme every country (not just US) has, this will not get better for your average Joe, it will get worse and worse.Sep 17 02:48
schestowitz[TR2]I believe in the next couple of years India will have an almighty crash, as they will be too expensive for most western countries, and outsourcing as we know it will retrench, and at that time India will have one he-l of a recession (as they build there economy on cheap skilled labour), but there will come a time when they are not cheap enough, and they will crash hard.Sep 17 02:48
schestowitz[TR2]But that will not equate to high paying jobs coming back to the US (or EU). As the dynamic of having to make higher and higher profits does not change, nor does the dynamic of an economy which has to have a stock market rising higher and higher every week.Sep 17 02:48

schestowitz[TR2]"Wow.  This one made the Rust zealots angry!Sep 17 20:44
schestowitz[TR2]But, and this is important, the real problem here is not that Ubuntu is replacing some software with alternatives written in Rust.Sep 17 20:44
schestowitz[TR2]From an engineering perspective, the language choice is fine.  Rust is just another programming language — good (and bad) software can be written in Rust, C, C++, Smalltalk, Fortran, Pascal… you name it.Sep 17 20:44
schestowitz[TR2]The *real* problem here is the throwing out of battle tested, well respected software — which there are not real-world problems with — in favor of new software which is:Sep 17 20:44
schestowitz[TR2]1) Not yet feature complete (and not able to be a drop in replacement).Sep 17 20:44
schestowitz[TR2]2) Only lightly tested (with significant bugs being found despite the limited testing and deployments).Sep 17 20:44
schestowitz[TR2]3) Being built with a language and compiler which is not yet finalized (and often changes, in significant ways, from month to month).Sep 17 20:44
schestowitz[TR2]From an engineering management perspective this is simply a bone-head decision.  It is absolutely, positively going to cause problems for end users.Sep 17 20:44
schestowitz[TR2]Which begs the question: Why would such a decision be made when anyone with even a few years of engineering experience would know, from personal experience, that this would be a bad idea?Sep 17 20:44
schestowitz[TR2]The likely answer: Rust zealotry.  There is a cult-ish fervor associated with many Rust users.  Not all, but many.  To the point where I received several threats of violence for simply posting my thoughts regarding some utilities written in Rust.  Based on this — and the statements from others supporting these changes — it seems likely that the primary motivation for making this significant change is the adherence to that “FaSep 17 20:44
schestowitz[TR2]ith of Rust”."Sep 17 20:44

schestowitz[TR2]@a6 Thanks for your post. I think you could loop two more sources of info into the “whats know” categories.Sep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]    IRS 5500 info is out for 2024 headcount’s (eg 2025 data Yes it’s runs a year behind) and IBM’s USA headcount appears to be hovering between 49k and 53k. That’s an approx 3k reduction from the 2023 numbers and is consistent. The inputs are labeled IBM short term disability (49.5k), IBM long term disability (50.6k), and IBM Group life insurance (52.2k). What the real actual number is, is anyone’s guess but there is a veSep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]ry very high probability that 49-53k works and that’s before the 2025 8k layoff.Sep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]    IBM’s general manager in charge of India several months ago confirmed during a posting that IBM India was in the 130-135k headcount range.Sep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]These two data points seem to confirm what we all know is going on. IBM is aggressively outsourcing to India and the USA headcount is much lower than most folks think. My back of the envelope analysis says 43k USA headcount after the 2025 layoffs, and 135k India employee base after the 2025 USA RA’sSep 17 20:58

schestowitz[TR2]@OPSep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]Let's summarize what we know here (this thread):Sep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]It is a fact that IBM is undertaking layoffs in the US and expanding its operations and hiring in India. We are not more ons (they may think we are, but we are not).Sep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]This has also created a severe level of uncertainty for US-based employees due to ambiguous messaging and (so called) "strategic" changes.Sep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]While IBM continues to keep their US-based employees uninformed and confused, and it continues with the US layoffs, IBM is shifting a significant portion of affected roles to India. What do we know and they can't deny?Sep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]In July 2025, IBM announced over 2500+ job openings in India across various departments, including engineering, consulting, and operations. This indicates a continued focus on hiring in the region. Back in January, IBM announced plans to increase its workforce in India by a similar number, focusing on "talent development and expansion" in Tier-2 cities like Bengaluru, Kochi, and Ahmedabad.Sep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]Source (worth checking): https://unstop.com/blog/ibm-hiring-software-developers-2025#:~:text=IBM%2C%20a%20global%20leader%20in,Brand%20Sales%20SpecialistSep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]Regarding the number of employees in India, IBM does not publicly disclose the precise figure. However, several sources offer estimates and insights:Sep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]Estimates of Employee Count: By most estimates, IBM has close to a third of its global workforce (at least 100,000 employees) in India, potentially more than in the US.Sep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]Hiring Trends: In March 2025, IBM reportedly had significantly more job openings in India (3,866) than in the US (333), suggesting an active hiring drive in the country.Sep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]Historical Growth: Between 2003 and 2007, IBM's headcount in India grew by almost 800%, reaching nearly 74,000 in 2007 (Wikipedia).Sep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]Since 2006, IBM has been the multinational with the largest number of employees in India.Sep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]This workforce restructuring affects various departments, including Cloud Classic Operations, Consulting, Corporate Social Responsibility, Sales, and Internal IT Teams.Sep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]The restructuring is expected (Yahoo Finance) to further create and expand roles in India, especially in cloud computing, infrastructure, sales, and consulting. While IBM has confirmed "workforce rebalancing," the exact number of job cuts in the US has not been officially and openly disclosed.Sep 17 20:58
schestowitz[TR2]Many other American corporations are doing exactly the same. But that doesn't excuse IBM.Sep 17 20:58
