schestowitz[TR2]Be wary of what people call "AI". Design and manufacturing used to employ legions of draftsmen and factory workers to bring stuff to market. They have since replaced a lot of those people with CAD/CAM software.Sep 28 20:30
schestowitz[TR2]Software development used to take place with people entering bits and pieces of code on the keyboard, in arcane languages. This still takes place to an extent, but nowadays a lot of CASE tools are used. Every diagramming tool, data dictionary, code generator and testing utility is what a lot of people would consider "AI".Sep 28 20:30
schestowitz[TR2]The same sorts of advances are taking place in more pedestrian occupations. Take a look at any housing development, and you'll see an increased use of prefab modules versus dimensional lumber. Staircases, flooring sections, premade bathrooms with plumbing and electrical...all of them can be shipped in and assembled by moderately experienced carpenters. You still see 2x4s and 4x4s, plywood sheets and the like being used, but it's noSep 28 20:30
schestowitz[TR2]t nearly as common as in the past.Sep 28 20:30
schestowitz[TR2]Speaking of home building, have you bought a home lately from any of the major builders? I'm talking Pulte, Lennar, etc. You see a consultant to buy a new house, and they use various web tools, Windows apps, etc. to "design your new house". Once a design is approved, money exchanged, permits approved, etc. all the needed building materials are automatically acquired and shipped to the job site, along with everything needed for the Sep 28 20:30
schestowitz[TR2]construction workers to do the job. Schematics are generated, component, material and cut lists, etc. There's still a lot of human intervention, but there's a lot of automation in the process.Sep 28 20:30

schestowitz[TR2]"AI Related Layoffs" is nothing more than the same old labor arbitrage and outsourcing that has been going on for decades. Whatever name you attach to it, the idea is to reduce cost by performing work differently than in the past.Sep 28 20:30
schestowitz[TR2]Every trendy business executive has the same dream...bring in lots of revenue as cheaply as possible. They offshored the labor for years, but that strategy is reaching its limits. Executives now want to use advanced versions of Google search and Wikipedia to enable lesser-paid employees to perform meaningful work. Just like the spreadsheet and word processor replaced lots of bookkeepers and secretaries all those years ago, the hopeSep 28 20:30
schestowitz[TR2] is that "AI" can reduce the need for engineers and developers.Sep 28 20:30

schestowitz[TR2]The article on companies pausing or stopping matches to 401ks does not really say much of value. 401ks remain a great way to save for the future. In addition many people are saying you should first add to your 401k up to the amount where the employer matches, then max out your HSA health savings account, then go back and add to 401k. Many people do not know of the great HSA triple tax benefits. I wish I had maxed out my HSA when I Sep 28 20:31

schestowitz[TR2]HSA vs 401k – Which Account to Fund First?Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]Do you have both a Health Savings Account (HSA) and a 401(k) through your employer? HSAs are generally thought of as a vehicle for healthcare savings – after all, that’s right in the name! – and most people understand that a 401k is used for retirement. Many wonder, though, which account they should fund first, the HSA or 401k. Let’s compare the two.Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]HSA vs 401k – What is the difference?Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]What is an HSA?Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]Established by legislation in 2005, a Health Savings Account is a tax-advantaged benefit account that an employer or financial institution may sponsor. When a person enrolls in a qualified High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP), they can open an HSA. The account can be used for qualified healthcare expenses at any time and, after age 65, also for non-medical retirement expenses. Once opened, you own the HSA account for life (or until ySep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]ou close it). Even if you change your insurance plan or leave your employer, you keep the HSA and can continue using it.Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]HSAs provide their account owners with what’s known as the “triple tax advantage”:Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]Tax-free contributionsSep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]Tax-free earnings and growth (through interest and investment gains)Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]Tax-free withdrawals (distributions) for qualified healthcare expensesSep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]As long as you are actively enrolled in an HDHP, you can make HSA contributions. Depending on the company’s benefit plan, some employers may contribute to employee HSAs. The IRS does publish annual contribution limits, so you’ll need to stay educated on the changing limits. You can also invest part of the balance to help the account grow.Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]An additional HSA perk is that beginning in the year you turn 55, you can contribute up to an extra $1,000 over the annual limit each year. It’s considered a “catch-up” contribution. Plus, after age 65, money used for non-qualified expenses is taxed as ordinary income without any tax penalty, essentially the same as if the funds were withdrawn from a retirement account. If you use the HSA for non-qualified expenses before ageSep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2] 65, there is a penalty plus the tax.Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]Learn more about current limits here.Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]What is a 401k?Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]Since their creation in 1978, 401k plans have become America’s most popular type of employer-sponsored retirement plan. Funded through payroll deduction, the 401k is a tax-advantaged account that allows you to contribute funds from your paycheck, thus lowering your taxable income before taxes are calculated. The 401k account is typically invested in mutual funds and grows tax-free. Starting at age 59.5, you can withdraw money froSep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]m the account without penalty. However, all distributions (withdrawals) are taxed as ordinary income regardless of your age, and if you are younger than 59.5, you will also face an early withdrawal penalty.Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]Two tax advantages of a 401k are:Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]Tax-free contributionsSep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]Tax-free growthSep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]Learn more about the current annual limit on 401k contributions.Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]Which account should I fund first?Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]One of the biggest questions for people with both accounts is which to fund first, the HSA or the 401k. Both accounts serve as vehicles for financial wellness. However, the HSA has a distinct advantage over the 401k.Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]Even though an HSA has a lower annual contribution limit, it offers more flexibility. The account can be used for immediate and long-term healthcare needs, and withdrawn funds are not taxed when used for qualified healthcare expenses, regardless of age. With a 401k, all withdrawals are taxed, no matter what the money is used for.Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]Because funds can be withdrawn for any reason without penalty once you reach age 65, an HSA can also serve as a supplementary retirement account. Withdrawals after age 65 for non-medical expenses are taxed like ordinary income, just like withdrawals from a 401k.Sep 28 20:31
schestowitz[TR2]Next time you start debating on which account to fund first – HSA vs 401k – consider the advantages and disadvantages of both before deciding. You may find that you are better off in the short and long term by prioritizing the HSA.Sep 28 20:31
