Hackaday ☛ DIY Smart Washing Machine Redeisgn
[Mellow Labs] wanted a smart washer and built a simple controller. However, he found out after a few weeks it wasn’t working how he wanted. The detergent quit flowing, and he washed clothes with no soap for a week! So, a redesign was in order. You can follow the process and the result in the video below.

Hackaday ☛ Agate Light Twinkles Just Right
Mother Nature is often a cruel mistress, but what can you do? You’ve got to make the best of what she gives you. This lovely little light was born from death — the death of a pine tree, that is, that was killed by beetles boring large holes inside.

How to Calculate the Cost of a Data Breach
Breaches of corporate IT networks now happen all the time, every day, to just about every type of organization under the sun. They are a top worry for any compliance officer, and figuring out better ways to prevent them or recover from them is never far from a compliance officer’s mind.
But what does a data breach actually cost? Where does that number come from, and what is a compliance officer supposed to do with that piece of information when you have it?
We can assign a cost to the “average” data breach easily enough: $4.45 million, according to IBM’s Cost of a Data Breach Report for 2023. That’s up 2.3% from 2022’s costs, and up 27% from a decade ago when the average breach cost $3.5 million.

Bloomberg ☛ Palantir's NHS Deal Faces a Trust Deficit
Palantir Technologies Inc. invested a lot of time and energy in cultivating its relationship with Britain’s National Health Service — treating its chairman to $75 watermelon cocktails and working effectively for free during the pandemic. That effort paid off this week when the US software company won a seven-year contract to overhaul the NHS’s patient-data system. The deal's success may hinge on how skillfully Palantir can handle another lobbying task: convincing the people who actually work in and use the health service to trust it.

Hackaday ☛ Harvard SETI Project Helps ID Mystery Sound
Last month, thousands of people in New Hampshire took to social media to report an explosion in the sky that was strong enough to rattle windows. Naturally aliens were blamed by some, while cooler heads theorized it may have been a sonic boom from a military aircraft. But without any evidence, who could say?

YLE ☛ Friday is Buy Nothing Day
Environmental groups want people to consider the impact that consumerist lifestyles have on nature.
With the holiday shopping season gathering pace, environmental groups want people to refrain from shopping for one day.
Friday's Buy Nothing Day is staged in many countries on "Black Friday," one of the busiest shopping days of the year in the United States following the Thanksgiving holiday there.
In Finland, the Finnish Nature Association is promoting the detox from consumerism, which it has been staging since 1993. It originally challenged people to try a one-day shopping boycott.
These days the group wants people on 24 November to reflect on their purchasing habits and consider the impact their consumption has on the environment.

The biggest freight brokerage layoffs and bankruptcies in 2023
Compared to trucking carriers, freight brokerages can avoid shutdowns even during nasty freight recessions.
But, since new capacity flooded the trucking industry and consumers stopped buying as much stuff, third-party logistics companies have seen an unusual threat to their business operations. We’re now seeing big layoffs and company shutdowns.
“Typically, freight brokerages manage revenue volatility through flexible operating expenses: Computers and chairs don’t cost much, and incentive-based compensation grows and contracts with market cycles,” FreightWaves strategic analyst John Paul Hampstead wrote in July. “That’s why hiring sprees and layoffs at freight brokerages are relatively common, but outright failures are relatively rare.”

Subpar Souvenirs
Last week my wife and I visited Walt Disney World in the US state of Florida. We spent three days exploring three of the four parks on the property: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Hollywood Studios. The friends we traveled with were primarily interested in the rides and attractions, but my family also took some time to browse souvenir shops.
While we were in the area, we also visited The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando. Disney World certainly has more to do than Wizarding World, but I couldn't help noticing how much more enticing the souvenirs were at Wizarding world than at Disney World.

ClockworkPi DevTerm R-01
Yesterday i have done something that i haven't done in way over 10 years: I have ordered a new computer. But no ordinary system, nothing to "normal", i have ordered an ClockworkPi DevTerm R-01.
Since i have first seen the announcements for the DevTerm back in 2021 i always liked the concept, the small form factor and that you get it in kit form. Since it was announced that they will ship a Risc-V based version i seriously pondered ordering one and yesterday i caved finally in to the demands of the voices in my head screaming "ORDER IT". Well, it has a estimated shipping time of around 60 business days, so i don't really think i will get it before the end of january, but i am really looking forward to tinker with this thing.

how to write good awk
awk is one of my favorite languages. it's not a match for all (or even most) tasks, but when it does work, it works *really* well
however, good awk code looks pretty different from good code in any other language. awk is by nature an event-based language, and idiomatic awk tries to keep as much of its logic in the action conditions as it can. in particular, try to avoid just putting a bunch of control flow into a single big action with an empty pattern.

Unicode Plotting in Julia
Having recently discovered gemini, I have been trying to think about what kind content I could contribute. I was slightly concerned about the lack of embedded images, as I generally like to do technical stuff with visualizations, but then I remembered something I had read in the Julia Plots documentation a while back and got an idea.
Julia is an open source programming language for scientific computing. It takes inspiration from matlab, python, and lisp (even though it isn't written with s expressions).
