Google News is Dying

Google News had many layoffs in recent years. That was in "the news", even in Google News. Recently we've repeatedly complained about 1) lack of source diversity in Google News; 2) slopfarm takeover in Google News.

Google lessens the incentive to do real journalism and rewards Serial Sloppers. Plagiarism in other words...

Now, get a load of this:

Yes, that's a tweet right there as a "news source", not even naming the messenger (a Republican bigot) and treating MElon's algorithmic/biased site as a source of verified news.

Thanks, Google News.

We now understand so much more about that incident: "thoughts and prayers".

What might come next: spewing out LLM slop (which they call "Gemini")? Remember what happened to Apple when it tried it.

Shame on Google. Given its budget, it could do so much better. But without much competition in this particular area is lacks an incentive to improve. Over the past 15 years Google News only got worse and worse each year, partly because of copyright lawsuits. █
