Florian Müller: Using Software Patents to Attack Software Developers, Agitate Against Patent Reform

posted by Roy Schestowitz on Sep 25, 2025

He also promotes attacks on the German Constitution and laws

Windows Phone 7 Series

It has been some time since we last wrote about Florian Müller, a "Liar/Spinner for Sale". Microsoft bought/hired him several times for propaganda. It did not even deny this. More recently he was promoting patent trolls. Some people contacted us about it. Back in 9/9/2025 someone shows us how "Florian" was promoting the illegal UPC, which we mentioned moments ago. To quote: "What can the UPC do? ip fray wants the UPC to succeed and considers itself part of the UPC ecosystem."

So "Florian" considers himself part of an illegal "ecosystem."

That's good to know. So this is what "Florian" does after "FOSSpatents", a blog where he used patents to attack FOSS and slam FOSS companies.

This bad behaviour is being noticed in other circles as well. Less than a week ago a reader wrote to us "About Florian Mueller", saying:

Hello Roy,

Hopefully you do read this. [redacted identifying details]

Recently there has been a big topic in the realm of videogames, patents. At the same time, Florian Mueller has become a big source for a lot if media outlets talking about the topic through a blog that he owns called Game Fray. Upon researching this person I stumbled upon your Techrights articles discussing this individual.

I was hoping I could talk with you about this person as I think his sudden involvement in the topic seems very strange to me, and you seem to have chronicles his methods and appearances in the past.

If you are not interested, thanks for even taking the time to read all this.

Best regards.

I guess the first thing I would like to discuss is how you first became aware of this individual and their work?

From your articles, I get that he spams his "credentials" to get quoted by media and thus raise his own credibility to get further quoted by media and push a narrative. Would that be a correct understanding of the way he operates?

[...]

Thank you! He seems to be presenting himself as a patent expert at the moment but a lot of his writings on the matter seem to be flawed or playing wording tricks. Is that consistent with your experience with him in the past?

Would there be anything you think I should know about this person as I continue researching them?

"He does understand patents," I said. "But he's on the side of aggressors."

He gravitates towards money and also did revisionism for Microsoft when it comes to gaming companies. He's basically a "coin-operated" pundit.
