The Lessons From the Assange Saga
Last week Jack Goldsmith wrote: "The U.S. government has never prosecuted a journalist under the Espionage Act (though the first Trump administration did indict and secure a guilty plea from WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange under it). But it is very easy to imagine Trump 2.0 doing so."
Trump 2.0 is already suing broadcasters in other continents, as they've long criticised him and he is looking for some minor error to pick on. That causes a "chilling effect", impacting any other national broadcasters (e.g. in France and Germany).
Assange is not an American and wasn't in America.
This is another example of overreach - the Americans asserting they have some sort of global control (authorities) over journalists everywhere.
This will not end well. We're already engaging our ministers in pursuit of a solution that works for the locals. █
