Solidarity at EPO

Yesterday: Standing in Solidarity With Matt Mullenweg

Memorial at World Trade Center Ground Zero

Staff of the EPO is ramping up industrial actions. Yesterday the staff union at The Hague issued a publication related to that. It had been entitled "The Strength of Solidarity" and it said:

Dear Colleagues,

Industrial action is one of the few collective tools available to staff when concerns remain unresolved despite repeated efforts at dialogue. Its effectiveness, however, depends entirely on solidarity.

c. They have done so because they believe that the issues at stake affect us all and deserve to be addressed. Their commitment deserves recognition and support.

The success of any collective action rests not on the disproportionate efforts of a few, but on the participation of the many. When some continue to deliver significantly above-normal levels of production output during an industrial action, the overall impact of the action is inevitably reduced. This weakens the message that staff seek to convey and diminishes the effectiveness of the sacrifices made by colleagues participating. It is important to remember that the benefits achieved through collective action, both today and in the future, will be shared by all. Solidarity therefore requires us to look beyond our individual circumstances and consider our collective interests.

At this critical moment, we invite all colleagues to reflect on the purpose of the industrial action and on the role each of us can play in making our collective voice heard. Work-to-rule means doing no more than what is reasonably expected and refusing to compensate, through extraordinary efforts, for problems that management has chosen not to address. It also means stepping away from the constant race for higher rewards and production targets, and placing collective interests above individual gain.

History has repeatedly shown that meaningful change is achieved when colleagues stand together. The strength of our position does not lie in the determination of a few, but in the unity of many.

Let us demonstrate that solidarity in the weeks ahead. Participate in the Industrial Action, defend your rights.

Kind regards,

Your SUEPO TH committee

It seems like the person who prepared this statement and the person who signed it isn't the same. Another explanation is, it was a collaboration between several representatives.

Later today we'll say more about "the Industrial Action" (they use capital letters). We're going to write a lot more about EPO scandals; we've left "in the bag" some stories for next year.
