Microsoft Demands That Staff Keeps Silent About the Mass Layoffs

Way to cause anger and ensure whistleblowers will go to the media

There are lots of Microsoft layoffs this week with plenty more to come. There are also shutdowns!

Microsoft shutdowns

"Microsoft Plans to Close Nairobi Centre" (yes, shutdown, says Kenya Times)

Layoffs Loom as Microsoft Plans to Close Nairobi Centre

There are "plans to close its Nairobi engineering operations".

Microsoft has been trying to hide this.

This was in India Times several hours ago:

Losing a job is never easy, but if an employee receives a notification of being fired with no warning, a performance improvement plan or severance, there are additional questions that need to be asked. What were the reasons behind the decision? Is the employee being treated fairly and is there enough proof to reverse the decision? These are the questions that become essential if an individual with extensive experience at the company loses their job suddenly. One has to distinguish between what they know and what has to be proven.

Also in India Times:

A manager’s toughest decisions often come when he is faced with the choice of keeping a good employee’s plight private in order to protect his or his own neck. Should he stay disentangled from a potentially career-ending issue for the employee by keeping it secret, or take a risk by trying to find some way to help without giving away sensitive information?

There are also reports of "Layoffs [that] Hit Israel" and now Vietnam and Azure (everywhere). India, Kenya... what place is unaffected?

Maybe the key difference is, some countries managed to unearth this and report accordingly (owing to whistleblowers), whereas many did not. █
