More fun in IRC. That Linus, he still doesn't get it! (Write him and tell him all about it, Roy. Please report back on his response.)
schestowitz: Novell employees join Lefty's attack on us: http://jeffreystedfast.blogspot.com/2009/07/faux-pen-source-fundamentalists.html
Ng: Linus is right though, the hatred and exclusion is madness
schestowitz: Ng: yes, it is
schestowitz: Tell Microsoft to stop hating Linux
schestowitz: Then, tell Microsoft to stop excluding GNU/Linux users
Ng: no no no
Ng: any behaviour of theirs does not excuse reciprocity
Ng: and certainly has no bearing on the negativity directed within the freesoftware/opensource community
Ng: (I'm a huge fan of the Ubuntu Code of Conduct, precisely becaues it codifies that we should behave well to each other, but obviously encouraging such a thing across a diverse set of communities is much harder)
Ng appears once again in the role of "The Voice of Reason". Much good that does.

This is awesome, I'm glad you flagged this down. I was split three ways on what Roy was going to do. Ignore Linus, dismiss him, or spin his statement. I couldn't see where he posted a link or wrote about the interview with Linus, but I wouldn't expect him to post one.
Unfortunately, Linus's words will have little impact with the ones who need to hear them most. They will just further distance themselves and embrace people like Stallman who value politics over productivity. Still, it made me smile, and sometimes that's all you need.

Seriously, this stuff is phenomenal. Ng, and later Trials, continue (in vain) to get people to see reason, while Mr. Hill apparently mutters to himself in the corner...
twitter: Jeffrey Stedfast, is that a real name
"twitter", is that a real name, Mr. Hill? Yes, that's Jeffrey's real name. See, we use our real names, because reputation is an important factor in how seriously people get taken in the real community. That's why anonymous and pseudonymous (e.g. "twitter", "DiamondWakizashi") commenters are by-default-Cowards, see?
twitter: It's funny how people talk about avoiding "exclusion" by embracing free software exploiters who exclude users from their software freedom.
No, it's funny how people want to exclude people who don't subscribe to their paranoid "Micro$oft is a poisonous cancer constructed of parasitic wasps" point of view from the community that the to-be-excluded are, in many cases, actually working in (like Jeffrey), and which the would-be-excluders (e.g. Mr. Hill here) are not.
Ng: why wouldn't it be a real name?
Indeed. One wonders if Mr. Hill (if that is indeed your real name) inquires this of everyone he meets.
twitter: Name calling seems to be the only thing they have for their defense. People who worry about software freedom, they say, are just irrational haters of nice companies like M$.
Well, if the shoe fits, Willy...
schestowitz: I'd rather Novell employees defended a message, not attacked messengers
Sorry, excuse me. Something just struck me funny. Never mind.
twitter: No one should hate an abusive monopolist that's tried to destroy gnu/linux and software freedom for the last ten years, should they?
Well, not to the point that they seeing abusive monopolists in dark closets or under the bed, no.
schestowitz: They want to collectively 'kill' many messages they don't like by lynching people
schestowitz: Now Jason at mono-nono
The "messengers" need to work on a) their message, b) their delivery and c) their standing in that rough meritocracy that is the actual open source (and free, if you're not a hysteric about it) development community. The message is incoherent, the delivery is...highly sub-optimal, shall we say ("Is that a real name?"), and you have no standing. I take that back, you have achieved a negative standing.
Show me the maintainer of a single significant project who is valiantly leaping to your defense pr the defense of this site. I'm talking about something on the order of (the GPL-licensed, and that's just fine) Blue-Z, or D-Bus.
Ng: twitter: no one should hate anyone/anything :)
schestowitz: Systematically they shoot down messengers
See above comment.
schestowitz: tacone too
schestowitz: Varghese..
schestowitz: nyu..
I have no idea who that is, so it wasn't me doing the "shooting". Who is "nyu", Roy?
schestowitz: RMS..
twitter: Yes, this one is attacking Stallman too.
No, he isn't. Some silly person (wonder who?) accuses him of that, and he points out that they're just making things up.
schestowitz: Who's next in the character assaSSINATION list? (oops, CAPS)
More paranoia. Cue the creepy organ music.
twitter: assASSination
Oh, that's so clever, Mr. Hill. I get it!
Ng: oh I think twitter is still ignoring me because I disagreed with him and was therefore marked as being a troll, or something
twitter: asses trying to make asses of people that point out their bad behavior.
twitter: So, we see mono people quoting the Lefty attack and trying to put the words into Linus' mouth.
That's right, Willy. I put those words in Linus' mouth. Linus is but a slave to my malevolent will. Uh huh.
twitter: this is really disgusting spin.
twitter: but it goes nowhere.
I don't know about that. There's a growing amount of sympathy in the community from what I'm hearing for the "enough is enough" point of view. The thinking is that the extremism from "advocates" is getting to the point of being actively disruptive on an ongoing basis. People can't have a reasonable discussion about Mono, pro- or con-, or gnote, pluses and minuses, without a lot of anonymous "Micro$osft is TEH EV1L!!!" nonsense getting thrown in there.
Ng: fix it with code :)
Those who can't do, "advocate".
Trials: how can anyone put words in Linus's mouth, except Linus ?
I studied for years in the Himalayan Mountains of the Far East, under Mystical Masters, where I learned the Power to Cloud Men's Minds! Muahahahahahahahah! (I wish I'd stayed longer and learned how to cloud women's minds, too. Life is full of regret. (Someone, please, call me a "sexist" now.))
Actually, it's a darned good question. No answer, however, is forthcoming.
twitter: No one is going to listen to Novell and mono bloggers when the FSF has published on the subject.
Right, because no one is entitled to have an opinion on the subject other than the FSF.
Ng: free software is a meritocracy. if you want to win, write better code
Ng: it's not a theocracy, which is why the loudest shouters don't ever get their way
Trials: Ng exactly !
Ng: e.g. gnote would replace tomboy in gnome if it was better :)
Hubert Figuiere wrote gnote, by the way, out of boredom, not out of any particular antipathy toward Mono. I think Hub is rather bewildered that you folks have selected him as some sort of poster child, since his view of you seems to be a lot more in line with mine that with your view of you, Roy.
Ng: (which it absolutely could be if sufficiently motivated people hacked on it)
twitter: It is amusing how the mono propagandist ape the crudest of M$ propaganda from a few years ago. "GNU/Linux wants to destroy the desktop" the M$ people said when they released the not so popular movie Ironman.
The movie Ironman was "Micro$oft propaganda"...? There's money poorly spent. In what other films do you see the shadowy presence of those Napoleons of Crime lurking, Willy?
Georgia, Syrian Arab Republic, Cyprus, Moldova, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyz Republic, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Belarus, Turkey, and Russia
"In the past 18 months," Berkholz writes, "I’ve lost 75 pounds and gone from completely sedentary to fit, while minimizing the effort to do so (but needing a whole lot of persistence and grit)."
